There's nothing about this car you wouldn't be able to do yourself, save possibly the motor but you could get much closer with parts you can literally bolt on after dropping the engine onto a milk crate in your garage.

he said $5500 in the video. sounds like a custom engine to me; but you could skip that and swap in a subaru engine worth about $1000-$2000, put out about 150-200hp

I still miss my first car, a '65 type 1, 36 years after it was stolen. Less than 10 hours after I spent the entire day installing $1,500 worth of new parts (at 1984 prices), the car was gone. Worst gut punch of my life at that point.

My first car was a 61 or 62 ragtop. Had a lot of dents,and the engine was in the back seat. did all the work myself at age 14.4 to drive on my 16th birthday. It was painted gold,and I wore the JC Whitttney catalog out, as I earned money to buy stuff. Looked like a show car,and had many offers but would not sell it. Finally traded it for a MG then had to sell it for more reliable transportation of a 68 camaro. Now I own 18 VW's, and stopped buying them so I can get all of them restored or resto-mods. m Squarebacks, Karmann Ghias,and bugs. Have not found a solid enough bus yet. Have to love these cars. Nothing like them.

Nice! My friend Zoe has a 59 Shes had since highschool (1984) it's a European model with semaphores, and a rag top. I've never seen another one. I had a white 64 in highschool that I ran into the back of a Chevy Impala Scottsdale PD cruiser while pulling into the school parking lot. Not my proudest moment! LOL I got some new front sheet metal and had it painted Chrysler plumb crazy purple and put centerlines on it. Dove it for a few years after highschool, and sold it. Fun cars!

My first car was a '60 beetle. Paid $100 for it in 1970. Had a ton of fun with it, but it had a bad habit of vapor locking in the summertime. The fun ended when an airforce guy slammed into me. Insurance gave me $50 for it.

Not to mention there is not any good place for a rad in the car as the front is fairly sealed up. Dont get me wrong, it can be done, but if you are under 300hp it just isnt cost effective

Ya I remember I bought my 1959 ragtop bug for $400 back in the early 80's .it was used as a chicken coop. Still have that car now but with a big motor fully ported and polished heads big carburetors, pro street transaxle, disc brakes narrowed front end, and so on and so on. Love that car and will never get rid of it. It's still the same color I painted it back in 1982. Purple. To all you VW people you know what I mean. I want to be buried in that car it's part of me and is family. Old VW's never die they just get better with time.

Do you know which motor? Quite a statement for them too say it's doing 200hp
@loganavery971
@loganavery971 7 жыл бұрын
200 hp isn't difficult to do. I'm guessing a 2110cc which will do 150+ on just the bore and stroke alone. Plus a counterweighted crank and a performance cam, an upgraded oil pump and fuel pump, hemispherical pistons and maybe port & relieve the heads, dual weber carbs which you can see in the video. Oh yeah, that things probably got at least 200. That lil f***er will haul.
@ZeddyThaMaster
@ZeddyThaMaster 7 жыл бұрын
Logan Avery im thinking about buying a bug when i can afford it and engine swap to a bigger. Was thinking about buying a turnkey 2.1L but they estimate power at about 120. Dunno if that is at wheels or crank but i want a bit more hp
@loganavery971
@loganavery971 7 жыл бұрын
If you want more power than the turnkey comes with, don't buy a turnkey. Because for more power you'll need to completely disassemble the engine and start throwing parts away. And at that cost, why not go with a porsche engine? Same exact engine only 2 more cylinders. If you want that much power, your options are to buy an old porsche engine from a similar year (you cant find more info on that online) buy a short block, or just get a case and a set if heads. From there, make sure your case is good by taking it to a machinist, hell look it over for like 20 bucks. From there, buy the cylinders and pistons and all their connecting parts. There are advantages to all piston sizes and shapes. Find which is best for your use. Take those to the machinist and have him match and balance them all. Buy a good strong performance cam. Look into carburetors. Many go with the dual webers, I prefer the progressive carb, its much easier to set up and deal with. Get your heads machined and flow tested. They will give you a max CFM (cubic feet per minute) and get a carburetor that is made for as close to that as possible. Upgrade oil pump, and there are a few minor upgrades you can make. This is the longest and most expensive route you can take. It's also YOUR engine, not someone else's. It will be the most rewarding. OR you can buy the turnkey, use as-is. Or buy a shortblock, use what you got and build the rest of the engine up (the most popular choice as it's fairly cheap and can be built to be very fast, and can be done in a timely manner) Get yourself a good street performance transaxle, it'll make a world of difference. You also have to consider that these H4 engines are torque powerhouses in a car that weighs only about 1000 pounds. A stock 1600 that's well maintained can get off the line in 1st gear faster than a 90's corvette. Second gear not so much. A 2.1 will be more power than you need. You also have to consider cylinder thickness, and the heat it will generate. Are you in phoenix? If so a 2110 isn't a good idea. Also, 200 HP doesn't sound like a whole lot but in a car that size and weight, it's gotta be more than enough to make the wheels spin. Want a VW guy's advice? Go with an 1835 or 1915. I've seen those engines built up give new import cars a run for their money, sound sexy, and make some jaws drop. They're low-maintenance, and reliable, and can easily (and fairly cheaply) be made from a 1600 block. And remember, out of Cheap, Reliable, and Fast, you can only choose two. IMHO, anything more than 2000cc's in an H configuration in a VW is overkill.
