The long critter at the end is called a Long-tailed weasel and they are common to Alabama. They hang out on farmland and by streams and river banks. They're great at keeping the rodent population down. Most likely you will see more of them with the addition of your pond. Enjoy the free rat catching services 😃

I agree ! They are tall, have a long bushy tail with a black tip so they could really be grey foxes ! Minks are not as tall or bigger, they have a shorter tail, a back more like a curve or an arch not as straight and they move less in a straight line and more in sinious way with little hops from what i have seen.
@snappingbear
@snappingbear 2 жыл бұрын
@Gfish ing Yes, I checked it out. According to one source minks are found along every river system in the state and are relatively common in the southern delta areas of Alabama. However, if the two animals were members of the weasel family they were most likely otters rather than minks. Otters are larger and found in groups whereas minks are solitary. I am leaning towards the idea that they were foxes, but I can't really be sure at all. I would have checked the tracks after seeing the footage.

Legit the most hi tech pond in existence. As a kid at the lake my grandparents had a cottage at upnorth Wisconsin. The next door neighbor always threw away his brush 15 feet in the lake and had a huge brush pile. We fished that pile for years and caught everything in the book in these waters at that pile. So once your pond gets full of fish they will love all the obstacles you added.

Those mystery animals are definitely Grey Foxes. The legs aren't nearly short enough to be of the weasel family. Also they're to big to be anything other than a mink and minks don't have a narrow front view like that. They're one solid color, lower to the ground, and wider. Some are saying ringtails but ringtails have a tail that's ringed of course and longer than their body. Grey foxes have the body coloration (white underbelly and neck, dark around the snout, with a black stripe going down the tail ending in a black tip), movement and shape that match the footage. They're smaller than Red foxes and move more like a cat vs Red foxes that move and act more similar to coyote. That's probably why they seem so different to you. They're definitely thin though.

I was thinking of something in the mustelid family, but you're probably right. I would have expected gray foxes to have larger and more prominent ears but it's hard to tell when their eyes are lit up like headlights

what about how long their bodies are? I assumed the land perspective just made them look taller than expected but if they are weasels, they will eat the duck eggs.

Those two are definitely mustelids at the end of the video, first thought was otters but the tail isnt skinny enough and they have a black tip at the end so my best guess would be Long-tailed Weasels (Neogale Frenata). Kind of reminds me of the fishers and pine martens we have up north. Edit: taking a second look someone else said grey fox and that could be correct. Legs seem a bit long for a weasel on the one that walks in the dirt.

Whenever I'm doing a timelapse with my gopro using a battery back, I mount the battery pack with the usb cable on the bottom, so if it does happen to rain, the water will not get into the pack, and will drain off along the cable. I also sometimes mount an umbrella to the post to give some sort of shelter.

I went cheap with my underwater lights. I used the older style round sealed beam auto headlights. Gel diffusers from studio lights over the headlights add color and a regular auto battery powers the setup. No concerns of electrocution. Parts are readily available. No expensive controllers to be concerned with since a cheap battery charger keeps everything juiced up.
