This live edge walnut desk started out as a massive 65" wide single slab of locally salvaged Bastogne walnut. Not just any Bastogne though. This particular slab was so nice that it was stashed by the mill owner until they ran out of room and finally decided they were willing to sell it to me. Working closely with my client we added features like bow tie/dutchman joints across the crack, very unique handmade table legs, and I even added a rather cutting edge ceramic wood finish. I just wanted to leave a comment and say thank you. Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge with us. You spent countless hours, learning your trade, all these years and I think it's really awesome that you share so much of it with your viewers for free. I'm a medically retired veteran, and I got into wood working a few yrs ago, started out making cutting boards, and still make a ton of them. I've been watching lots of your videos, and my plan is to try and start making walnut slab tables. I am fortunate enough to live in Missouri, and we have TONS of Walnut. Anyway, I just wanted to hop on and say thank you, I really mean that. I actually forgot something, so I edited this comment to add. Your tables, are just absolutely beautiful, and your attention to detail is just outstanding. I'm sure some of that probably comes from being a pilot. @@BlacktailStudio You need to be careful with your audience Cam. We're all going to start hitting a "wood-gasm" limit and begin passing out. Add in some basic Pine or Oak projects to keep the temperature down a bit! Seriously though, I LOVE these slabs you are able to work with and what you do with them!

@@rice0009 Yeah, don't want the subscribers being desensitized to wood-gasms. That leads to more and more extreme and deviant woods like sycamore or... or osage orange. Viewers might even turn to stone sculpting and masonry to get their rocks off other channels.

bowtie! I actually initially wasn't too enthused about the look of the bowties just kinda cutting into the basic grain, but the beauty of the wood is definitely still kept and it feels really do nice btw, that comment regarding thumbs down's is just an amazing example of how down to earth you are w/ this whole channel and it's immensely amazing, and amazing work on the table as always!

Bowtie. If I may make a suggestion: why don't you create a second channel "Blacktail Studio ASMR" and upload a version of your videos with just the wood working sounds. So you export the video, right before you make the voice-over version. So people can have which one they like.

It's doable, though if if its doable enough is up to him, but it isn't as easy as exporting it before doing the voice over. He still has to do (and redo) all the audio mixing, note how there isn't any audio in the voice over other than the voiceover. He also probably has to completely re-edit the video as there will be bits that the ambient audio isn't good enough (eg bad recording, uninteresting, uncomfortable etc) and to have the flow work without a voiceover. So while it not be a doubling of work to create an ASMR version it is going to be a significant increase in work, and he will have to judge if it's worth it.

Bowties are honest. They show tha a craftsman is aware of the fragility of a joint, and wants to show, honestly, how they have taken the problem into account! It will, of course, separate over time without the bow tie. There are some other methods to use, but this is both simple and elegant! Love the Ceramic coat too

for someone that doesn't know much about wood-working, they look like fancy band-aids. they stick out like eyesores on an otherwise beautiful piece of wood. i get the need for them, but man do they take away from how good the table could have looked.

@@dereknapier836 Would you rather pay $9,000 for a desk that would inevitably break apart without the bow ties? To get a beautiful piece of wood, you have to accept its natural flaws. Life is full of compromises, some people just haven't figured that out yet, I guess.

@@dereknapier836 Trees like the one Cam used in this video are so rare, that you just have to accept natural flaws in order to utilize the boards that come from said trees. Otherwise, if you aren't willing to accept the flaws (and by extension the need to stabilize them), then you pick a different board for your project. Simple. Also, don't you think that Cam probably used the nicest side (fewest flaws) on the top side to begin with?

What I love about your videos, Cam, is that you have such a down to earth attitude about your work, even when handling tables that are being sold for over $10k. It helps the noobies, and probably also the more experienced woodworkers, among us feel more relaxed and less stressed about every micro-decision we have to take. Halfway through this particular video you talk about how you don't really know how much the bow ties really help, but it probably does, so you just make a decision confidently. It took me weeks of mental preparation to hang up a simple mirror because I didn't know if I had to use 6mm or 8mm screws/plugs. After weeks of dreading and postponing it, I finally set out to hang the damn mirror. Turns out I couldn't find my 6mm drill bit so I had no choice but use the 8mm one. In the end it didn't even matter, and the mirror is hanging just fine. All in all, your videos are very relaxing, entertaining and very educative. Thank you!

I just found your channel not too long ago and have been binge watching it since. Not only is your voice calming, but you are funny, a rare quality it seems on KZfaq. I love the vast variety of your videos and the fact that you don't hide your mistakes but show how to fix them instead. I also enjoy the videos on the tools and your shop; the way you describe everything is extremely helpful. I would love to get into woodworking, but unfortunately, I don't have a garage. So learning from your channel, as well as the other you tubers you recommend, is how I live vicariously. Don't change a thing. Thanks for what you do. I am learning so much!!

Bow tie. My dad does professional Hawaiian bowl woodturning and the bow ties actually add value to the piece. It acknowledges there is a flaw in the timber and it has been addressed. For the uninitiated, the bow tie does take getting used to. I now find them to be aesthetically pleasing and really adds character and patina to the piece. This desk was exquisite. The figuring was similar to what you would find on higher end Koa pieces and matched by your skilled craftsmanship. Well done!

Bowtie... Please, don't ever listen to any of the negative comments about the format of your channel. Silent wood working channels are a dime a dozen, but there are only a few that have commentary, and even fewer that are as high quality as your channel. I'm subscribed to quite a few woodworking, fabricating, hobbyist, craftsmanship, etc., type channels, however, your channel is literally the only one that I have notifications turned on for. I look forward to every new Blacktail Studio video because I like WATCHING the tables and LISTEN to the process. The best part is that you can almost guarantee that the people who said they would be unsubscribing, will continue to watch every single video you post. People like that just love making empty threats. Just keep the great, high quality content coming!

@@jokinabadsbs I agree partially. Most of the tools that it takes to do this are very expensive, and also you need a place to put those tools. There is a lot of factors when calculating price. Also this type of work is dangerous. I have thousands of dollars worth of tools, but I don't have the tools that it takes to work with huge slabs. I guess my point is.. it takes a lot of money to make money lol

@@dereknapier836 I build furniture (including river tables) and you have a bit of a point, but keep in mind the amount of labor that Cam puts into his pieces that most other shops don't. He spends hours filling every crack and void and then even more hours meticulously sanding. He mortises in the legs and goes the extra mile to create a really spectacular piece. It's the difference between an actual artist and someone looking to make a buck. Also, you have to have a sort of consistent pricing model regardless of the slab's price. If the final result isn't too dissimilar to another piece (regardless of the slab prices) it doesn't make sense to charge 1/4 of the price since that'll just confuse customers perusing. Cam seems pretty transparent about his pricing model but doesn't have to be. If you put the table built out of a $250 slab next to the table built out of a $1500 slab you wouldn't notice the difference IMO.

Bow ties are nice and necessary, otherwise you wouldn' t lose your time on them. Please keep talking you have a very good diction, a good speech rhythm, a nice voice tone, and you are teaching and helping many others woodworkers. Congrats, the tables are fabulous.

I don't like the look of bow-ties, but in this projects they are actually kinda cool, because it looks like dams holding back reservoir water in a river. I also completely understand the necessity of them being inserted to hold the wood together, so it's not really a question of taste...unless you could make them just on the undersite so you don't "ruin" the surface of the tabletop. Anyways...I enjoy your videos a lot, keep it up mate! =)

Bowties are something I fell in love with the 1st time I saw them used on an Ishitani table. The fact that they are structural and aesthetic just makes them that much more appealing to me. I actually like it when a completely different wood is used, something about the contrast of the woods adds to the look.

The color and grain in that walnut is incredible, I can see why it fetches such a hefty price. I've been playing around with the idea of making bowties out of non-wood materials, mostly stone (granite, rose quartz, blue quartz) to give some high contrast and added interest. Im curious what your thoughts are on this idea. Awesome vid and table! Cheers!

Ryan that's a great idea! I work with various building materials and types of stone, and I have been thinking of ways to incorporate some of the more interesting stone into these pieces. edit: would have to install the stone in a location that won't need additional cuts or sanding. I'm not aware of any dual purpose material removal methods that work for stone + wood, unlike metal + wood.

I saw a guy on KZfaq do a bronze bow tie that he cast and machined, it looked really hard to do but it popped. I liked the aged bronze or oiled color. The hardest part seemed to be getting it flattened perfectly with the table.

Bowties, the narrative on your videos is natural and always interesting, your asides and comments entertaining, all this while watching someone who loves crafting, proudly develop a work of art. You give us an honest appraisal of a project, or a product, and how the whole thing went. No hype, no “Look how wonderful I am“; just a good straightforward conversation about the process. Bowtie! My father is a woodworker and has recently started turning his own bowls from cast offs, scraps, and such that he finds out and about on his walks. This table is gorgeous and the added ceramic is a must for something so pretty. I am going to pass that onto him for his future projects. Everyone has an opinion these days from the bow ties to the use of the metric system...they can all take a piss! Keep carving your own path and creating these masterpieces for your friends, family, and clients. Wonderful job!

Notie generally, as others have said it can detract from the grain. However, if they were more of a feature piece rather than trying to blend in they could make an interesting addition.

Bow-Tie is fine when needed. Your work is terrific. I've been finishing professionally for more thirty years and have been reaching my sheen levels the old fashioned way (seriously centuries old processes) and I think that its time for a new way...Rubio Mono-Coat and Black Forest Ceramic here we come.

Bowtie: This man is the first youtuber i've come across who asks you to subscribe if you think his content is worth it and not at the beginning but after you've watched enough to be able to make an informed decision. People go ahead and subscribe to then tell him to shut up on his OWN CHANNEL? Unsubscribe and leave him in peace. Keep talking sir, i love it. Ive got to say, I absolutely love your videos. Ive dabbled in DIY, simple things like mounting shelves and basic restoration of second hand furniture and you have inspired me to take up this expensive looking hobby. Your videos are great though. I just found this channel a couple days ago. I don't EVER plan on doing any woodworking but it's fascinating to see a raw piece of material turn into something interesting. Also, I like to listen to the commentary because I can see what is happening from a noob's perspective.

You know it's a pleasure to see beautiful wood, I've worked with wood for years, building floors stud work, stairs, house building and it's not artistic, so to see special wood being made into one of a kind furniture is a real treat. Thank you for doing something I never even thought about, never dreamed that someone would spend so much money on any crafted furniture.

NoTie: The bow ties on the top seemed to detract from the beauty of the filled crack. I think you should have added the bowties on the bottom for structure but left the top just the epoxied crack.

yes! or if you really must use them on top, recess them and do it before the epoxy fill, then carve out the "proud" potion to look natural so when you fill with epoxy you have no idea there is structure beneath it. Also, if you go that route you can use thinner metal joints with epoxy on top.

Notie! I think there's enough character in the table from the figuring, live edges and epoxy. The bowties are a distraction. Really beautiful result. Must've been a great feeling to finish working on such a nice piece of wood.

I love the look of bow ties. It speaks of craftsmanship, awareness of how wood ages, and I’ve seen some pieces with different color ties in them! They’re wonderful when needed.

At the ripe old age of 38 and a mother of 2 lively boys, I have just started as a 1st year apprentice of fine furniture. Your channel and this video in particular speak to my love of character timber and the need to be meticulous in how I treat it and sculpt it. Love this desk. I'd love to do something similar, but wouldn't know where to start. I did a 3 year cabinet making and upholstery course when i left school, but ended up thinking it was a waste of time, but i'd love to go back to it now. i'm also around the same age, but thought it was way to late to start again.

I have been watching you build for a while now and I an impressed with the high attention to detail you put into your work. I can to anything with wood except to burn it or cut it too short. What I can compare what you do to what I do is the almost obsessive behavior to wanting all the imperfections gone. I do paint and bodywork on modern and classic cars. And I find myself obsessing over the slightest flaw. I believe that this leads to producing a higher quality product. Keep it up.
