I worked in prepress too as a Mac software developer. Made photoshop export plugins and chooser drivers for laser printers dye sublimation and finally large format printers. Was involed in early color management software as well. I think I had a 700 briefly but I remember having a 900 and the 850 a/v. Started with an se/30 in ‘92 and then a IIcx which I still have and it’s loaded in ram and radius rocket. Setup to video from when adobe premier first came out.

The 700 was the first Mac I used. I also worked in prepress and design, and I was brought in to start the studio, and they set me up with the brand new Quadra 700. PhotoShop 2.5, Aldus FreeHand, and Illustrator. Happy days. Nice print; now I need to print one. Im still using TinkerCad

The Tom's Hardware article pointed me here and I really liked the clear and extremely detailed presentation. A wonderful case build that I'll print and maybe even build. My 3D modelling & OnShape skills are a bit lacking, but I'd love to model the Xerox 6085 "Daybreak", complete with monitor.

I was in school in a publishing class when the Quadras came out. We had a lab of SE/30s with a couple IIci for color work, running early Pagemaker, Photoshop, and the like. Then the Quadras arrived. It was amazing. Then my last year, the Power Macs came out. Sadly, while we got one for the lab, none of the software we used released a PPC-native version before I graduated.

I’d recommend you keep the Pi display at your screen’s native resolution and set the resolution in Basilisk config and use scaling, preferably at something that scales nicely such as 960x540

That is so cool Bruce, really. Great idea for a RP4. Wish I had a real Quadra 700 or 900 in my collection but … boat missed… peps are asking £1000.00 here in the uk for a spares or repair which is stupidly. Glad I got my other macs before this madness started. There’s even a SE in the UK which the asking price is £1997.00 been going round for years. So your RP4 solution is something I want on my desk. Love your videos especially the live ones - it’s like listening to a friend , unfortunately I can’t join in due to the time splits but your main views seem to be USA so fair play. But I remain a fan regardless. Thank you - you are the reason I got back into 68000 stuff so thumbs up.

Awesome! In the mid-'90s I was taking a Print Production and Graphic Design class a the local Junior College. We had just received new Macs and we all got to name ours after a different country. I got the Quadra 700 and I named it Zimbabwe. It was an awesome machine for the time. Still one of my very favorite Mac models. System 7.3 was the first one that was actually called MacOS, if I recall correctly. I didn't realize the Raspberry Pi could emulate a 68040 Quadra. This is awesome! With all the needed reconfiguration I can see why you don't have it boot directly into MacOS. It looks great at that new resolution. That would have been amazing to have back in the day. Of course I would want to have PageMaker, FreeHand, Fontographer, QuarkXPress and Photoshop on there. I don't think I have copies of those programs from back then anymore.

Oh hell yeah! I messed with later quadras cuz my dad ALSO did prepress in the 80-90s, but just saw these 700 guys recently and love the design, and now there is a baby one! (incidentally I mashed 4 Quadra 950s that my dad's work had dumpstered together my junior year of highschool in 2002 to make a monster 3 HDD, 512 mb demon that got used to... play LAN marathon a couple times. Gave it to my grandpa when he got out of prison and sadly it was lost to the ages)

This is amazing. Thanks for taking the time to put together such a complete video, from the case to the internal components to the software configuration. I can't wait to build one of these. :) How well does Basilisk II handle talking to actual vintage Macs over an Appletalk network? This build could be the ultimate bridge machine/vintage Mac fileserver, or it could be set up for always-on GlobalTalk. :)

Very nice work! You can tell when someone takes their stuff seriously (when they're printing 3D models of it). I haven't seen Mac OS running at that resolution before, looks nice actually (these were the days of fiddling with Trinitron monitors at 1024x768, and going to sleep with a great big screen still glowing at you after turning the bedroom light off). I used to do some C programming on Mac back then, but I can't even remember the names of the compiler products - Symantec Think C maybe. Names like Quickdraw & Inside Macintosh are coming back (I've still got my copies somewhere). Very well written documentation, but the OS had some quirks. Windows was the other way around - crappy documentation, but easier to second-guess the event behaviour (i.e. in the GUI).

Cool! I don't plan to go to all this trouble, but I am inspired to look into a Basilisk option for one of my older intel macs. There was one particular game (Harpoon) meant for System 7.5 that I can barely run on my iBook G4, but it would likely crash less often using a 7.5.3 emulator vs. the classic Mac OS 9.x on the iBook G4. These single board computers are rather impressive.

@@BranchusCreations I had the same background in SA! Go figure. And I do NOT want to go back. LOL. I haven't had any Apple desktop or laptop crash or freeze in over 10 years. The "legacy" Mac OS were so unstable right through to their death with OS 9. I just can't go back mate. I would have lost literally thousands of hours thanks to the old non UNIX based OS. However I'm happy for you to relive the agony and the ecstasy that was Apple computing in the 80's, 90's and early 2000's....;-)
