Building a Backyard Shifter Kart from an ATV Engine

We're building a backyard shifter kart! We have a blown up Yamaha Blaster engine, and a powerful Tillotson 225cc racing engine, so we figured why not build a yard kart with a transmission? This go kart transmission should hold up to the 25 horsepower that our go kart engine is making. We're installing the engine and transmission on an American Express 2.0 go kart. It's an update version of the vintage go kart the American Express.
Our Yamaha Blaster engine has a hole in the engine case, big problems with the piston, and the rod bearings are out of it. It's safe to say that this ATV engine will never run again, so we cut the jug and head off and linked the transmission to our Tillotson 225!
Thanks for Watching!

When I worked on small engines, like snowblowers, lawn tractors, rototillers etc, this guy brought me a single stage 2stroke snowblower. Said it had a noise. Got it running, was listening to the noise from underneath. Threw a rod at my face. Busted a hole like the one you guys showed. Loud AF

MY DUDES! 1st off this channel means the world to me, so I’m glad to hear you’re still in control. Ive been through a lot in the past few years and this channel helps me get through my hard times while you guys just do your normal activities so thank you. I’m also stoked that you are doing what I and I’m sure a lot of others could wait for a gearbox attached to a small engine. I’ll just sit back,relax, and watch the entertainment.

That pit bike would be a good candidate for something like a 125 cc engine. or something that you could pickup pretty cheap. it would make a cool future project for sure. being as it's all junk part's you could weld that flywheel on the on to the crankshaft. but I appreciate your patience and doing it correctly.

Consider this -- pull the crankshaft out. Make an input shaft that can have the engine gear welded on one end and a key way on the other to fit your sprocket. You can make a plate to cover the cylinder opening and seal the crankshaft cavity to hold the bearing lube. This can be used on any engine and add longevity to your build. Keep on building - you guys come up with a lot of cool ideas.
@shawnsatterlee6035
@shawnsatterlee6035 Жыл бұрын
It's gonna eat the main bearings out because they don't know the crank of a 2stroke is sealed. No oil from gear box is lubing the mains. Now with that being said, some bikes the PTO side main is lubed from gear box, but the flywheel side is always lubed from fuel/oil mixture. They should have filled the crank with 15-40 least quarter way b4 putting the block off plate on it. But live n lear! Maybe one day they will actually figure out how a 2stroke operates 🤷‍♂️
@TheShepard5348
@TheShepard5348 Жыл бұрын
@@shawnsatterlee6035 You have to be a machinist to pull it off. I know these guys are smart but I haven't seen any lathe or mill yet - hopefully in the future. You have to cut the shaft to fit in between the bearings and make so it can't shift left or right. This cut fits the bearing - 2nd cut fits the seal 3rd cut fits the engine gear and whatever your driving. Fill the crank cavity with oil and cover the cylinder port with a plate. Output stays dry --- crank bearings stay oiled and the tranny oil stays where it belongs.

I'm typing this ahead of time but the only thing I see is the crankshaft will create one hell of a vibration because of no piston and con rod to offset the balance of the crank weights so maybe a bolted on counter weight would help. Also a fill plug on the plate would be good to have toom

I can almost gauruntee that transmission will hold up to the power, pretty sure that's the exact same transmission that Yamaha uses in the Banshee. They run about 28-30hp stock, I've got one right now that pushes around 50-60hp on that same transmission and it's been fine.

You are going to need to eliminate the crank and replace it with a solid shaft. The flywheel key will never stand up to being right in the middle of your drive train. It would be like trying to replace your master link in the drive chain with a piece of pull chain for a house light.
@TheShepard5348
@TheShepard5348 Жыл бұрын
With my idea of turning an input shaft on the lathe, you could cut the input shaft to fit the secondary pulley of your torque converter (series 30 or 40 --- all the way to a 780) . This gives you a transmission that could be used in most builds -- like a jack shaft mount with gears.

@ 7:59 those are normal cast marks on a blaster jug. The jug is still good and still usable. I would keep that seeing as a factory Yamaha one is pretty rare now days. Most of them are Chinese replacements. If it says y-1 or y-2 on the side Intake side. its an original Yamaha head. You can get a wiseco crank for These things for about $300 and $200 more you would have a decent blaster engine. Case can be repaired in shop with the correct welding wire and method. Also if the clutch is stuck together just take it apart and pull the fibers and metals apart and scrub with scotch Brite

The gearbox and crankcase are two different units as far as lubrication is concerned. The hole in the crankcase doesn’t affect the gearbox oil. As far as lubricating the crank, you could probably get away with spraying the bearings with silicone spray lube every few minutes of riding since in the original application, it was lubricated by the 2 stroke oil mixed in the gas.

Probably a good idea to make a fake crankshaft, eventually... get those counterweights out of there because it's unbalanced without the piston and rod on it, which is why it was shaking so bad. Takes care of the bad threads, too... that's machine work though. Could live with the threads, weld a chunk between the throws and start cutting and grinding until it's just a straight shaft, leaving thrust bearing surfaces in place and such.

The flywheel is used in the differend rotation now thus loosening the nut. Put the sprocket directly on the shaft. But then the cranckshaft could deform.

I had idea how mating these two items together would even work. I have several Blaster motors and cores from building them in YSR 50's. My son and his friends have about 6 different Predator type motor builds on contraptions mush like you guys build. So now my brain gears are turning, we might try to mimic this set up, so crazy, it might even work.
