I really love the cinematic nature of this video. As someone who’s caught the reptile addiction (just got a Pac-Man frog, I know… amphibian, at NARBC) and has a million plants around the house, it’s fun to watch others with similar passions.

Thanks for this video! Saving it as inspiration for creating a bioactive enclosure for my crestie in the future - thanks for making this so easy to follow and also thoroughly going thu every step while explaining what you are doing and even why.

Great video! It's wonderful to see young people take such a good, evidence-based approach to reptile-keeping. I wish we'd had the knowledge we do now when I was your age, many many decades ago! :) Glad to have found your channel through Snake Discovery.

I got my gargoyal gecko last year and he will soon be moving into his bio enclosure. Also,you can keep staghorn ferns in cork rounds. I've had one living in one on my kitchen counter for 3 vears.. They are hardier than I thought they would be.

Great video as always! Arboreal geckos have been quickly growing on me lately, and I always love to see people in the captive wildlife community striving for the best habitats possible for our animals, something that is unfortunately nowhere near common enough. One comment, however, about naturalism. Your gargoyle build thankfully doesn't fall victim to this, but in the zoo world I have seen a number of exhibits that do so I'm assuming that it occurs in the reptile community as well. Be aware of what I tend to call "pseudonaturalistic" builds. As a student of animal behavior, I've seen way too many habitats that look aesthetically naturalistic, but don't truly allow for naturalistic behaviors. The most important aspect of a "naturalistic" enclosure, however, should not be that it looks naturalistic, but more so that it enables the animal to behave naturalistically. It's great when both can be achieved, but way too often it seems like the aesthetic is prioritized, and exhibits either don't provide enough climbing opportunities for arboreal species or there are too many obstacles designed to make an exhibit look naturalistic, or any number of other issues whereas the aesthetic comes at the cost of the exhibit itself. Moreover, there are plenty of great exhibits out there that don't even make an attempt at looking naturalistic. Many species of monkeys, for instance, would be very content to live their entire life on a playground, even if it may not aesthetically represent the wild, as it still allows all the same naturalistic climbing behaviors to be expressed, whereas an exhibit designed out of mock rock and live plants that is designed to look naturalistic may not always provide adequate climbing opportunities to express these naturalistic behaviors. TL;DR: There's more to naturalistic builds than just the aesthetic, as the expression of naturalistic behaviors is usually more important.

Thank you! That is fascinating, and definitely something I should talk about in a future video. I definitely wanted to ensure that this enclosure provided opportunities to express natural behaviors including cryptic basking, climbing, hiding, jumping, etc. That is a good point that “natural-looking” doesn’t always equal naturalistic.

Hey Hunter! 👋 Your Geckos enclosure came out Awesome! *Question: 1. Did you adhere the cork background to the glass with silicone? Or did you just laid it onto the glass without havingto do so? 2. When cutting the screen barrier, did you cut ✂️ it to the exact measurements of the square enclosure? Or did you go a inch or 2 larger than the exact square measurements of the enclosure?
@HunterHouck

It fit tightly, so no silicone was needed. I cut the screen slightly larger to allow for a lip to keep substrate from falling through the false bottom.

Hello! I've had my adult female crestie, Glenda, for a month and she is healthy and active, but she keeps chirping and I'm not sure why. Usually, chirping indicates some sort of stress or sign of feeling threatened, but I can hand feed her, move things in her enclosure, and nearly touch her without her making a sound or fleeing at all. Sometimes when she is not in the mood, she goes to hide in her log, and then I leave her alone, so if she feels threatened then why doesn't she flee? Though she was handled lots by her previous owner, I have not handled her yet as I want to establish trust with her. Sometimes they chirp when they are hungry, but she is well fed. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. She only chirps when I have my hand still in front of her. Again, I can move the plants around an inch from her face and she doesn't care. Sometimes, she moves towards me, licks my hand, and then chirps. I don't get it. Do you have any advice or answers for me? I would appreciate any input.

It looks like you have a mister in the top corner. Which one do you recommend for this setup and what frequency/run time do you suggest?

Hunter this is awesome man! Is there any reason you couldn't bring the gecko into the new enclosure sooner? As in a few days? I'm trying to coordinate my build but only have a very small 12x12x12 so I was planning on keeping him there as short as possible!

How did you get your gargoyles to be so hand tame? I’ve been trying to handle mine used to being handled (when they come out of their hides) but they won’t settle down. They end up jumping and get into spots that are difficult to retrieve them from

I wouldn’t keep a gargoyle gecko much older than a year in an enclosure of that size.
