After finishing off some pizza flavored chips, why not turn it into a dice tower!?
#mythreach #Ep8 #tabletop #rpg #dicetower
When I started this, all I knew is I was going to use a Pringles can and that I wanted the top to come off. I don’t know why I wanted the top to come off, but all I knew is that it was gonna happen. I guess I should have better reasons for doing things, but I’ll leave that for future builds. I decided pretty early into the build that I wanted snow, I had a snow medium that I bought some time ago and thought I’d give that a try.
And let’s not forget that I used FOAM BRICKS that I sell on Etsy here:

Thanks! Im pretty happy with how it turned out. I found myself enjoying the winter scene. Something I would like to do more of, though I haven't found enough time to...yet.

Beautiful and inspiring for sure. Quick question, what did you use for the snow that you were adding to the windows and rocks? I looked to see if you included a material list, but don't see one. Love your videos!

Thanks so much! I tried a few different options, but ultimately the Snow from Woodland Scenics was the best for the price. Easiest place to get it is probably on Amazon or a local train store. You can mix it with PVA glue to create the lumps and then sprinkle it on top to make it look a bit fluffy.

Omg, such a nice job! I did one myself with blue foam and when i tried putting acrylic paint on it, it doesn't stick. drove me crazy.

Thanks for the kind words! As for the blue foam, I've never used myself, but I would think a light sanding with a fine sandpaper should make paint stick better.

@@CharlieMorningstar555 Mix black paint into Mod Podge to do your basecoat on foam. Use a wet bush to apply it and thin it out to preserve textures. A nice thin coat will make it ready for acrylic paint to stick well. It'll be streaky and cloudy looking with just one coat. I normally do 2 because I usually spray paint my stuff before moving to acrylics. I never build anything out of foam without using it. It also works well for painting aluminum foil. A couple coats and it's ready to paint. Sometimes crumpled foil is the perfect texture, but painting it is futile without a coat of mod podge.

Is that dry wall compound you’re using for the joints? Then a wet rag to wipe excess?
@Mythreach
@Mythreach 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, just generic dry wall compound. You can use any type, but unless I am trying to minimize the weight, I use regular air dry. I use the lightweight/non-shrink stuff too, but that will leave it foam-like after drying. Best to use the regular compound with a wet rag.

What did you use to put on the bricks and mold the rocks?
@Mythreach
@Mythreach 3 жыл бұрын
I use Aleene's tacky glue for nearly everything. As for the rocks, it was lightweight hydrocal, but regular plaster of paris works too.

@Mythreach
@Mythreach 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I use regular dry wall patch on the foam and Sculptamold for the rocky areas (which is basically paper mache). And of course, actual rock molds.

Regular wall patch to fill between the bricks and Snow from Woodland Scenics, not the powder form but the tub of premixed that spreads on.

best dice tower video I've seen out there but you didn't show how to make the top piece really at all....it appears already started and you're putting some sticks across the top then it appears again later fully constructed
@Mythreach

Thanks! And sorry that parts seems missing from the video. Sometimes I do things that slide out of frame and have to cut. Other times I just cut for time. In this case, I think it was because I had to spend a lot of time trying to build up the foam on the lid, which never wanted to stick. Nothing wanted to stick to that plastic lid and in hind sight, I should have just cut the shape out of cardboard and bypassed it altogether. But because I didn't, I ended up with a lot more than planned off camera. :/ It never fails when after I make a video, maybe a month later, I think of a better way to build it. Lol. Always makes me want to go back and shoot a supplementary video. If I ever do, I will definitely include that dice tower lid!

I cut out circles with a step area similar to the steps inside the tower (i think it was 2 layers because of the foam thickness i was using. 1/2" foam). Then I glued the lid to the bottom of that. Then I just took individual bricks and stacked around it until I got the shape I wanted. And before I made any step that was permanent I kept checking to make sure the lid would close. Then after the base was completed I just cut thin pieces from balsa and glued directly to the foam. Hope that helps!

Some hopefully helpful criticisms: 1. Include either written or verbal instructions over your video. I had no idea what you were doing or using half the time. 2. Do not skip important steps like attaching the stairs to the tower, or the tower to the base. I would have appreciated seeing that much more than all the time you spent carving the same things again and again. Due to the above, this is not a very helpful video for those of us who hoped to find some help. But the tower does look good.

Thanks for the advice! It's true I have an issue when it comes to cutting the video. Its always a mix between various reasons, but it's good to get feedback. Since then, I have been trying to create a supplement pack to download that includes everything I had been working on, including a how to build setup, but so far, nothing for the older videos. Definately things to consider moving forward. Thanks!
