We are going through more chicken feed now that the chickens are being locked into their chicken coop. So today we are going to be building a diy automatic chicken feeder. This chicken feeder was inspired by other feeders we have around the property.
Follow along as we explore and learn to build a homestead in middle Tennessee. In 2016 we packed up our three kids and decided to leave suburban life in order to rediscover our love of outdoors, and learn the necessary skills to build a homestead from scratch. Learn with us as we begin to grow a garden, raise chickens, hunt and forage for food and live life to its fullest.

Since chickens seem to pull feed out of feeders with their beaks, what kind of waste are you getting with the feeder you made?

Hey Alan! Surprisingly we are getting very little waste. They were always spilling an contaminating the galvanized feeders from TSC because they would jump on them and mess them up. These stay clean, they can't access the feed from the top and take up a very limited footprint in the coop. They have been working very well for us, but I do wish I had put a handle on them since it can be difficult to move them full of feed.
