Building a DIY Multi-Band Dipole for HF

In this video I go through the steps to build a very simple, inexpensive multi band dipole antenna for the 40 and 20 meter amateur radio bands which can be used either at your home or in the field for off-grid emergency communications.
Additionally, this DIY wire dipole antenna will also work on the 15, 12, 10 and 6 meter bands if your radio has an ATU or you have an external tuner. This exact DIY Dipole Antenna has allowed me to work and confirm 26 countries, all 50 U.S. states and every continent.

2ea. PVC Pipe Coupler
1ea. 1/2" PVC Pipe to 1/2" Pipe Thread
2ea. CPVC Bushing
6 1/2' of PVC pipe
90' of 12 gauge stranded copper wire
Hot glue or Epoxy

Thanks for the comment. Some of the footage for the box didnt turn out good due to the low quality camera used to film it. Hopefully my next antenna build turns out better 🙂

Thanks for the video. I am building a 4 element fan dipole for an inverted V and am looking for ideas for the center feedpoint as it pertains to tension and electrical connections. I realize this is a few years old now, but still relevant to my situation. Thanks again for the ideas. I have a 45’ tower that has a pulley on it to raise and lower the center and the end points will terminate at 10’ off the ground with parachord for the last connection to the tie points at the ground. My goal is to keep the radiating elements off the ground so humans and animals don’t touch the high voltage ends. My fan will be for 80/40/20/10 meter elements. All the best. 73 de KI5HXM

Just working through the physical things like how the elements can be stretched right without issues. Thanks. I am close to cutting wire. Just have to wait until my back can quit spasms haha. @@brentjohnson6654 Sounds like you are getting there. take your time with the tuning and get it right where you want it. Cut a few inches longer than your calculations and trim down in small increments. It can be a bit tedious, but will deliver better results. I wish you well, my friend.

@@w4aoxradioadventures thank you. Yes I imagine this will be tedious as there are elements that can interest with each other. I plan to have pulleys on the far ends so that the elements can be dropped from middle or ends or both. It will be a learning experience which is great since that is why I love the hobby. The bolts in question are just regular black coated bolts found in hardware stores. They have been in use for several months before I filmed this and have since been replaced with stainless hardware since they have obviously began to rust.😀

Is there a reason you did not use a Balun?

Thanks for the question Miguel. The reason I didn't use a balun at the time is because when I was researching dipole construction, there was no mention of using a balun. The antenna works well without one, however, I am currently making a video on the effects of using vs. not using a balun for this type of antenna and those results and the corresponding video will be up hopefully next week sometime.

It did work ok but I have not yet recorded SWR readings. I have recently moved and dealing with other life events and havent been on the air in a while but hope to get some accurate SWR readings soon at my new location.
