We live in southeastern Illinois on a 41 acre homestead. We just finished building our log cabin in 2018. Now we are focused on trying to grow our own food and raise livestock. Follow us on our journey we continue to develop our homestead and farm, while becoming more self sufficient.

You don't seem to have any digging teeth at the tip of your auger. I believe that would help. A call to an implement dealer could be helpful.

Lol I ran into same problem on mine once I replaced the worn cutting teeth on it it worked great. Plus using a steel bar to help apply down force helps in hard ground

We built our feed troughs on the outside of the coral so they could get only there heads through for feed and hay . One or two 2 × 6 on the top and two solid 2 × 8 or 10s on the bottom . That way they can not waste as much feed and hay . Less pushing and fighting , and same with the pig can't push and get their feet in the troughs ? Vertical bar or board is a good idea as well 🤔

Evan, please go to Pengo Attachments and order some weld on holders and replaceable bits. I worked at an equipment rental store for several years and we used the Pengo T36 weld on holder and 1336LC replaceable teeth. I promise you will be amazed at what a new set of bits on a worn auger will do.

I have duplex soils. 6" topsoil then 18" gravel before I hit the hard clay. That way I get to dig 2' before I need to add water. 😁

Would love to see you try to tackle building a metal round bale feeder over the winter. Less waste than dropping on the ground. Plus your welding videos are probably my favorite ones so asking for selfish reasons lol.

Great job Evan and Rebecca, turned out great. Might throw some dirt over that gravel in front of the water tank so the stone has no chance of entering the hooves of the steers. Check them if they start walking funny. Watch the turkey, yes he is protecting what is his but it and he is yours and get his attention or he will get worse and become dinner sooner than you might want him to. Good fence, good position , with a slope for better drainage. Im Third generation cattle family. The plastic feeder will not last. You could add a board inside so the steers dont rip easily it off the fence..... But I expect it might last a year at most. Id suggest a cement trough is the long term choice.

My last post hole diggers had a big replaceable tooth on the bottom that seemed to make it dig thru anything except big rocks

Two things Evan. First you need to get a spud bar. It can be used to break up the hard dry dirt in the bottom in your post holes before you use the "clam shell" to dig it out. Second, I was not able to tell if your auger had cutting edge teeth on it. It did not look like it did. Get a couple of teeth for it and your life will be so much easier.

Add a Weight bracket to the top of the Auger assy to hang tractor Weights on .

The more the tractor can do cleaning out the stall etc. the better since winter is coming and so is the muddy season. The tractor has become a godsend to all the tasks and will keep most of the mud off your rubber boots.

That dirt you were drilling reminds me of putting in a fence for my back yard. 4" to 5" of topsoil then hard as really weak cement slurry. I was digging about 8" or 10", poking holes in the bottom adding water and letting it soak. My 3' deep holes were dug with a hand auger, UGH!

When i was a kid a friend of my parents got a white stallion from a man who couldn't take care of his animals anymore. When the friends wife went out to feed the animals this stallion would go crazy, snorting and winnying angrily. One day the gate to the fence hadn't been shut all the way and this horse got out. This woman went out to feed the animals and this horse took off across the yard to her. She ran and picked up a 2x4 and turned when this horse got to her and smacked him up beside his head a good one. He NEVER got aggressive with her again. 😁

I sucked it up and bought a new drill tip for my auger and it made a heck of a difference in how it would grab in hard soil/clay like that.

Evan you need to invest in a digging/tamping bar to build fence with, it will help you on those hard bottom holes and tamping the posts in with, good job on the fence build, I actually just got in from concreting in some posts for my corral. Also, if you had an auger for the front loader you could put down force with the loader, I converted the gear box from a 3pt auger to hyd. I can give you some tips if you want to tackle a conversion

Hello If you weld an old concrete drill with a thickness of 1-2 inches to the tip of your earth drill, drilling will be easier.

Digging near a tree a always a challenge in itself 🙂 I'm afraid the feeding system is going to have a hard time with the stears, quite curious how long it's going to hold. I grew up on a farm. and one of the rules of thumb was "don't attach anything to any fence, ever".

I worked with my grandfather many years ago and put a lot of fence in the old timers would take bricks and rocks and put at the bottom one one rack at the bottom then fill in for about a foot rocks around all the sides and then for your grab more dirt you can just put dirt and then it don't matter so I just wanted to let you know maybe it'll help you out thank you have a good day

We use a pointed bar to poke holes in clay soil , Clay is impervious to water. Our huge water cattle tanks had clay bottoms and never leaked. Also after poking holes with a bar , Put a couple of table spoons of dish soap in with the water , let set over night with a five gallon bucket with a slow dripping , plus it covers the hole so nothing can fall in or break a leg ? The gravel is a great idea for any dug post holes , allowing for less rotting even if treated .

this might make drilling holes easier.... I soldered a hose fitting to the end of a 6 ft copper pipe and I now drill with this water copper pipe thing it works amazing with little effort... It might give your holes a start for the larger drill auger.

Good Job on the feeder. The only thing I would have done was position it 4 inches on other side of the fence. Just below that 3rd board. That way you can pour the feed in from the other side and it will be lower for when you put smaller cattle in there. It would be a little safer with the big boys. You can always change it up when you get new steers. Just a thought.

You need to make a weight for the post-hole digger to get more downforce. Maybe a metal box of some sort that you could fill with gravel which would make it easy to remove when doing maintenance.

Hi Evan, You need to put a cutting face on the bottom of your post hole Auger, that will cut through the hard ground. Much the same as a drill that has a hardened face on it Our soil in the old home we had was gravel in Australia and the post hole digger was just like this.

Hi Evan and Rebekah, we had almost an exactly the same fence pole digger that you have, but ours had a rectangle holder on the top, to hold fenceposts, like a rack, and on the sides there where hooks to hang weights onto, like for examle front weights to a tractor, that was what we used when the ground was that hard With a few weights on, it dug into almost any hard packed dirt 🙂 your projects always looks so good, and adds to the comfort for both you and the animals

Great content. You know that tractor post hole auger can be sharpened, grind it to a chisel edge. Some blades are removable, those can be sharpened and then hardened for longer life. I enjoy your videos.

Evan something you might do is put some clear fiberglass roof panels on the barn where you took off the siding would let light in and make it warmer if you wanted to you could frame them up to take off or fold up in the summer

If u can remove the pilot point on the auger, after ur down a little bit that will allow the digger teeth to contact the soil. Good luck!

Evan your a decent welder so you can do like I did. Rig you up a small platform on top of the arch of your post hole digger so you can put weight in it. It does help in dry conditions.
