Thank you so much for a detailed how to do a warm roof. I’ve followed your method almost exactly, apart from an extension difference. Building control visited on Tuesday and passed it with flying colours. Now considering I’ve never done anything like this ever is quite a result. Really, a huge thank you to you. 😊

Cold start to the new year. We have had a cold start too. Hasn't got above 39C which is great so far. Like the switch furring idea. Worked well with a bit of thought. Did a lot of flat roof builds in UK. Never did a warm roof version. We just built them. Roofed them. Packed them full of insulation from underneath. But then all the fancy insulation boards were just coming out. Like they are here 25 years later. Never seen them on a job yet. Still very expensive. Limited competition. That is a nice size addition. Will be very useful when completed.

Nice to see this done properly after getting ripped by a recommended roofer! I should have done the carpentry myself but was too busy elsewhere on site, I'm still amazed at the balls of some people to charge top whack and then cut every corner possible, ended up with jablite(polystyrene) instead of the PIR I'd budgeted for, massive price difference and performance. Nice work Del, like the trick with the firings, you made extra and used the waste in one! I would certainly go back over the wall ledger with chem-fixed bar or rawl bolt. Those fisher fixing are very convenient but only rated for non-structural applications, I imagine they have poor shear resistance as a result.

In Ireland we have to counter batten on top of joists for air flow..obviously you can do it under it..and also they prefer ply wood than osb to screw the insulation to.. then cover the insulation with another layer of osb if it's done in fibreglass

Nice one Del, doing the same next week, we have encountered problems on the roof lights with the new insulation on the upstand fkin madness. I obviously noticed no wall plate I know it's probably not needed but easier with. Now the big question, Jiffy hangers, for years I always set my house plate on the ground and fixed my hangers before fixing the plate so the straps could be wrapped over and fixed from behind as they should be. After many years my Son convinced me no one does this anymore , still think I am right 😁👍
@thetallcarpenter
@thetallcarpenter Жыл бұрын
Hi Andy🖐You should, really, get full wrap on your joist hangers, and the way to describe is the only way to do it. However, I would normally use mini hangers for a flat roof like this, as they are smaller but still have 8 nails in each wing which is crazy strong💪 (the builders got me joist hangers instead) Hope you are well mate, and thanks for watching😎Cheers

Great job Del 👍. A lot of work in a warm roof for us Chippy’s to do now lanterns are another thing to set out and work out. I’d generally do the same with the tails to reduce the fascia size nothing worse than a 350mm fascia. Not sure if you have a ppn but I use a bostitch strap shot I do like you nail everything in position then have a metal work hour end of the day can do about 60-70 full hangers in that time keep up the great content 👌

@thetallcarpenter
@thetallcarpenter Жыл бұрын
Hi there🖐This would be fine with a parapet wall, and the only reason to use a wall plate is to give the joists something to fix to, and even then the plate still needs strapping to the wall, so I leave out the plate, solid block between each joist, and then strap from these blocks down onto the wall below👍I don't think there's a right or wrong in this instance, but I don't like to put timber in when it's not strictly necessary👊Thanks for your comment and for watching 😎 Cheers Del

What happened with the back wall in the end, did he build a parapet, also love the way how u done the joists firing detail to keep the facier as small a possible, is that pretty standard way to do it, as id like my roofer to do that when i extend next year, also it is usual to not have a top plate there. Sometime ive seem people bury the joist in the wall, is there any reason why u would do that, as ur way seems so much simpler, does it just depend what the local building regs are
@thetallcarpenter
@thetallcarpenter Жыл бұрын
Hi Jackzuk🖐I oversailed the roof at the ends instead of parapet walls. I have put the joists on a plate before, but as long as they are strapped down, it doesn't matter. In the absence of any specific drawing/detail for roofs like this, I just do what I think is necessary based on my experience of whats needed. The Inspector VERY RARELY picks any fault with what I've done👍

When cutting the firring off the joist it reduces the height, do you use taller.. timber to ensure its still 170 after cutting? Non builder here,so this is a question not a statement, do you not require a wall plate on the brick work end?
@thetallcarpenter

Hi Sean🖐I have done the odd one with the joists sat/fixed to a wall plate, but this method is perfectly fine as long as its strapped down👍Cheers Del

I literally never use Fischer hammer fixings- am I missing a trick here? I always worry that it’s hard to tell if it’s caught the masonry or not

@@thetallcarpenter yeah maybe that’s where I’ve gone wrong, just never sure they’ve caught or not. I will buy some, although I’m not sure why you wouldn’t just use the 6.5mm masonry screws?

I suppose it’s the hollow frogs on the brickwork swaying your decision there? Now us using 152mm masonry screw just to catch 35mm of brittle brick face!

@@thetallcarpenter. I never liked the hammer in fixings, I always seem to have problems with them. As a DIYer I just gave up on them and stick to screw in fixings. 😂 Great video as usual.

Do you hand nail all of your hangers and hardware on? Do you guys not typically use hanger/connector nailers?

@@thetallcarpenter That sounds like a standard builders mentality. Lets "save" money by not spending $30 more on gun nails an have 30 hangers on in 45 minutes. It's "cheaper" to pay the laborer for half a day. Nice to see that somethings are the same on jobsites across the pond.
