We are tearing out old animal stalls in the lower level of our bank barn. We are building a new stall to house goats. It will be a large stall so it can house several small goats. The stall will have a platform for the goats to be able to lay down off the ground. We also plan on installing a hay feeder, mineral feeder, and water bucket.

Your enthusiasm is amazing. Don’t worry about making mistakes, you’ll find a hundred people telling you different ways to do EVERYTHING. Do your research, pick the way you think will work best for you. Relax knowing you’ll get to tweak/repair/redo most things a few times.

Just to let you know that goats, especially young ones, will jump into the hay feeder and mineral tubs, and then use them as a platform to jump on top of, or over, the wood partition on the front of the stall. Please do yourself a favor and install the same wire fencing on top of ALL your stall walls. You might even want to consider adding a wire extension on top of your gate.

Looks Awesome! I'd suggest you think about rehanging the gate to the other side and make it so it can swing out and block the isle. That way when you are chasing them into the barn the gate will block the isle an force them to run into the pen you want. I'd do that will all the gates, nothing worse than chasing them back and forth down the barn isle till they decide to turn in to where you want them. Lastly, does your barn have water in it? I don't remember, but if you do or can run it to the barn auto water feeders are the best so you never have to worry about them running out on a hot day. Plus once you run it into the barn you can do it for all the animals in there too. Real good workmen/women ship there by the two of you.

@sheiladuncan1027 5 жыл бұрын
that looks like it was more for dairy cows with the concrete floors that could be hosed out. You wouldn't keep horses on concrete. The goats will need fairly deep bedding on it as well. It's ok for part time, but concrete floors are harder on animals than it is on humans. Nice stall though.

Looks great!!! You should do the feed room after finishing the fencing, and build a medical cabinet too. Have you looked at the ceiling in the alley way to see if there is a trap door??? Makes it easy to drop hay from hay loft!!!! I built swing doors on my hog pens, to block the center alley. It made it easy to move a sow to the boar pen for breeding without them getting out!!!! Also to move a hog to a ramp to load into the trailer. We had one try to crawl under the trailer to escape one time! I cant wait to see whats next!!!!!

Wow, the goat stall turned out Great! =D Something I thought of is something Al from Lumnah Acres did, maybe you could drill a hole in the back corner of the platform so that you can keep a tub under it and be able to sweep the goat droppings into it to put in your compost? :) *Edited* Oh, also, something else I just thought of after seeing you comment that you have a couple hay doors in the ceiling: since you have that and it'll be easier for you to store your hay up there than having to keep it in a feeding room on the ground floor, maybe making a hay feeder the way Heartiness Acres did would be a good way to utilize that? :)

The goats love the platform. We probably have 12 inches of deep bedding and they always choose the platform. They do poop on the platform and we have to sweep it off weekly.

@@CountryViewAcres might consider a small ramp with cross bars, for grip/so they can catch their step, as they goats age out and/or for smaller kids. Wouldnt take much extra and it would provide a safe situation if they need it. (Maybe along the opposite wall as the divider wall).Just a thought. Great build overall! I have a small homestead and i have chosen to swing my gates outward (due to issues of thick bedding etc). The slighter swing room would still benefit the inward swing if u needed that i would think. Hope things are progressing well for u all. Take care!

@CJDe-kx8of
@CJDe-kx8of 5 жыл бұрын
Very Nice! Do you have an idea of how many of the Nigerian Dwarfs you'll be getting? Besides not liking the dark and getting wet, goats do not like being crowded, the herd queen, at the least, will bully (rear up, butt, bite) others in close quarters. Once you put in hay rack, mineral container, feeder/s and water tub the goats will lose pen space. There will not be space enough for dwarfs and larger goats in that pen. Mixing two sizes will create an issue with feeder heights as larger goats will be stepping and pooping/voiding in the lower dwarf feeders unless you run feeding troughs to the outside of the pen. An opening between the trough and a board mounted above through which the goats put their heads to eat. An in pen water tub will have the same issue with bodily function waste contamination. For these reasons plus the fact that hay (Bermuda and Alfalfa) absorb waste odor and goats won't eat it. This is why distance is required between feeding and sleeping areas when wanting to feed in an enclosed living area. Contrary to belief, goats do not live by pasture alone, particularly if it consists of primarily of clover and Bermuda (although they love Bermuda Hay which makes for happy, healthy goats). New Spring pasture is not beneficial as the weeds and grasses contain moisture primarily. Additionally, because they do not need a host to survive, tape worms live on the underneath side of the grass blades, especially in Spring. Goats love to run, jump and play king of the hill. They are sociable, loving, funny, responsive, quickly trainable, occasionally stubborn and make terrific pets. If their tail is 'up', it's a good sign that are likely healthy and happy. If their tail is 'down', they may be ill, wormy, injured/in pain, or other and in need immediate attention. Enjoy; I have for almost 20 years.🐾
