What a wonderfully inspiring video!!first let me tell you your video editing is excellent!.in have watched this video several times now! The footprint is very elegant and strong!I am a gardener and land owner. When I saw this video I said what a great thing!so today after after 5 hours today and 5 hours yesterday i made a jig .ripped 1x4s 12 feet long in half on the table saw.then spent those ten hours building these beautiful curved gothic beams!!!thanks very much for posting this video. I do have 10 full beams at 12 foot beams.!!!i am.making another 20 this weekend. Making them is addictive. Lol.thanks very much from one grateful gardener to another:)

I have one made of strappings spruce - as long as its covered by plastic and doesnt get wet - its fine. you can also paint it to seal or varnish the arches before setup. its gone thru 4 ice storms and still standing. using the strings to go over the plastic are a must - but I wouldnt advice to add screws onto the middle sections of the plastic as water will eventually leak onto the structure.

Hi Benni! Loved the speed! Looks like me when my blood sugar is out of whack. I was wondering: Would it be possible to do one side and attach to soffit area of my roof as a permanent sunroom? If so, any ideas on what burglar proof clear material to skin it with? Also, can you do a vid on how to make the jig for bending the boards while you work on them?

A couple of points I'd like to make CONSTRUCTIVELY : If your arches had a longer fixing point onto the wooden base beam, you could then after putting on the plastic, LIFT up the arches with a jack or a lever, and fix them at the higher setting thereby stretching the plastic tight. The plastic could also be either wrapped round a piece of wood and the whole thing fixed to the base beam, OR you could dig a trench along the outside and bury the plastic, using the weight of the soil to hold the plastic tight . Tim Jones' comment on pressure treated wood does have a point. I would AT ALL COSTS avoid penetrating the plastic membrane. When you have a stretched membrane and then pierce it, what happens? Lastly, I must congratulate you in your video making skills. No language barrier, No nonsense, no repetition, and logical sequence. keep up the good work!

Iain Melville , all I would add about piercing the plastic is I've made holes for bolts in my pollytunnel by heating the wrong end of a drill bit with a blow torch, it makes a neat hole that shouldn't tear, I wouldn't make the hole with a screw.

Very nice video, but it left me with some questions. What are the dimensions at the base and how high is it in the center? How long were your side strips and how far apart were your forms. I have been thinking of building a greenhouse and have spent a lot of time looking at different plans. Do you by chance have more detailed drawings or plans? Out of all that I have looked at yours appears to be more size that I want.
@bennigoes6176
@bennigoes6176 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you, the dimensions are 5 meters long, 3 meters wide and 2.8 meters high. The arches have a length of 3 meters and are one meter apart from each other. I will soon upload a video with further details.

I live in Alaska in a rather humid environment, and my neighbor has a greenhouse made of untreated pine sitting on the ground that has lasted five years and is still going. He reckons it'll last another year as a greenhouse, then several more years as a place to store his firewood, at which point he'll tear it down and build a new and improved one. He's lived this way for 25 years, cycling through building projects because he likes it.
@edsmith4414
@edsmith4414 5 жыл бұрын
I'd agree. Lot of work to go to and use pine that won't hold up. We made one using white oak, and good so far (4yrs). Also we used 4yr greenhouse plastic, which is now going into the 4th year and still holding up well. Look into standard greenhouse 'wiggle wire'/tracks for holding the plastic very well instead of all that wood on the outside to hold the plastic (and trap moisture)

Lovely production and form but... so many weak details and so much unnecessary work: The edges of plastic sheets are weak and need to be held down continuously so they don't flap - point fixings like those will tear in no time. I'll be surprised if the tiny 'tab' you left at the bottom of the rafters and used to fix rafters to the rails will do it's job in a strong wind. You could easily have left the tab longer and got a really good attachment. Why on earth set the concrete bases so high? - if you'd set them lower you'd have been finished after fixing the the rails and saved having to infill with all those pieces - if you deliberately raised the rails to prevent rot and used the lower pieces as sacrificial 'blocking' that you know will rot and get replaced, why not just overlap rails and save yourself a bunch of metal work and fitting between. Ya, lovely to watch but...
@loofayfiasco
@loofayfiasco 6 жыл бұрын
isn't that the purpose of the strings? to avoid pulling (flapping) adjacent to the screw & washers
@adammacer
@adammacer 6 жыл бұрын
Sure, that'll prevent tearing in the middle of sheets but the bottom edge is free - in my experience of house wrap membranes (which are tougher than that poly) any free edge will destroy itself in no time..
@raunefare
@raunefare 5 жыл бұрын
If he just had pulled the plastic tight. Maybe by wrapping it around a piece of wood. Then all off the strings and small screw's could be left out.
