Part 2 of our DIY soft top to hard top bimini conversion. In this video we add the fiddles, hatch and sand and finish the hardtop. We definitely underestimated the level of difficulty adding the fiddles would be. I guess theres a reason you don't see many boats with them! That said, so far, they work really well. Join us as we finish off this 3 month long project!

Through the magic of KZfaq I got to see you today in CA with Linh and Teal and then watch you in SC and NJ. I hope we get to find out more about your sail north, as well as your trip out west. Great job on the hard top!

Hey Ryan and Jessica! I’m next to you in Biscayne Bay here in Miami. We are on our way to see Gary Fritz who you bought your boat through. I’ll try and stop by this morning if you are still here.

Nice project, I enjoyed your documentation of it. I'm curious about one choice however and that's the hatch. Why didn't you simply go with a standard hatch from Lewmar or similar? Seems like that would have provided a nice site window to see the mainsail and a clean installation look? Thanks.

Good job, and catching rain water is very good, because a water maker might break down. I saw GBU make a top like this, and they used pvc foamboard, and glassed the top side only. I didn't know that pvc foam board existed until then. I told my brother so he used it to repair his dash in his truck. He found out that pvc cement just melts the foam. He tried gorilla glue, so you were right.

Nice job, but I kept waiting to see you polish the frame while you had the hardtop off. Would have made polishing it a lot easier. Still turned out good.

Just make a temp rain collection system. Couple shower drains, some 1 hose, a single 5 micron filter, all dumping into s 5 gallon bucket. Would work until you install a perminate system.

Awesome project! Your courage in diving into a project of this scale is inspiring. Learning a lot about the possibilities of working with fiberglass through your channel and finding it very interesting even though the only fiberglass thing I own is a corvette. lol.

OMG Ryan - Just caught your picture on todays Basik posting. I've never noticed the height difference in your videos, who's responsible for that 1 1/2 ft spread? Trust you and the l'il uns are having fun. :-)

Everyone is good! We split the difference height wise. Jessica is maybe a little shorter than average and I run on the taller side of things at 6'4".

I am very curious to see if the fiberglass will bond to that gelcoat where u added the rain shield most gelcoat has wax in it so i feel like it could have a weak bond. To get a proper bond new glass needs to be laid over old glass that has been properly prepared threw sanding and dewaxing. Be sure to keep an eye on that it may start to delaminate over time

Looks great! Just curious why you didn't use your mold with fiberglass as you did the hatch. Wouldn't have been easier,? Lighter,?
@jandradventures
@jandradventures 2 жыл бұрын
We did consider it. The biggest downside to wood though is it can rot where the coremat material cant. So if any water works it way into any of the through bolts in the bimini the wood can rot and make a weak spot.

I am glad to see you guys are posting more. Great project and well executed. Isn't water just going to lay on the bimini? The fiddle is going to stop water from running off?
@jandradventures
@jandradventures 2 жыл бұрын
It would, and we didn't explicit show it, but there are two drain holes on either side. So all the rainwater gets redirected there.
