Over the last two plus years I've been in communication with Kev. Always responsive, acurate, patient, and a joy to deal with. At times I was ready to give up. Just made something similar for my tiny pond (it’s gonna be bigger next year). The pond is several years old with plenty of “gunk”, but I never seen the bottom of it. Got hold of a 1 m3 Schütz IBC tank and filled it with leca. The water going in is distributed through pvc pipes on the whole bottom area. Overflow back to the pond in the top. After just two days the water is crystal clear!!! 🎉😊 it’s really amazing! Thank you 🙏 Currently the bog filter is seriously oversized. It’s 2x the pond volume, but we’re planning on expanding the pond to 5x the filter volume.

I have been researching building ponds on and off for a couple of years. You have, by far, the best videos and I want to emulate your system. My area to work in is pretty much exactly the same size you have built. Please provide measurements for the bog filter holes, intake holes, and stream. Also if you could let me know the size of the liner necessary for everything since I will need to purchase all liners. The drum filter is the most effective, given that it does not need to be cleaned. It has automatic smart cleaning, and good filters have emergency systems and a system that can work without electricity for several hours; when electricity is supplied, the filter turns on and continues its work without any problems.

I love the ingenuity and appreciate you taking the time to post your videos, and I have some comments for thought. I'm designing a bog for our pond expansion and will incorporate your use of the pickle barrel since I can source them locally for about $35 USD. Great use of those in your build. I'm using such a barrel to build a skimmer similar to the Helix and should be able to for under $100 USD including the floating weir and basket. The pitfall I see with your design that I'm curious to hear from you about is the water flow. With the intake running down vertically and then 90-ing at the bottom, and with the end of the corrugated half-pipe open, I doubt intake water will ever make its way through the length of the corrugated pipe. Since water flows via the path of least resistance, it will leave the intake and, rather than struggling to pressurize (though very low pressure) the corrugated pipe cavity and going through the small holes, it will simply turn straight up and out the open end of the corrugated pipe. The water flow will concentrate just above the intake to where the vast majority of bacteria and plants will not receive equal distribution of the waste. I think if you were to say dye the water, you'd only see the dye just above the intake and not distributed up through the bog. In the event you ever retrofit or have issues, I think capping the end of the corrugated pipe and then running the intake schedule 40 pipe with holes drilled in it and a cap on the end horizontally through the entire corrugated pipe will better distribute the waste and force it through the corrugated holes and up through the media.

1:43 I guess without having any matrix blocks to create a false bottom it means it’ll clog up quicker than with blocks because there is less space for sentiment to sit and accumulate but it’ll still do a great job at filtering the water compared to a small sponge filter.

i didnt watch this video before comenting on the other ones about the bog x) now i know what was confusing me is the cleaning barrel. i couldnt understand the role of it on the build, i thought u had one pipe coming from the bay to the barrel and another pipe doing smth else inside the tunnel to another place and that the barrel had 2 holes, one for water entry and another for the water to go through and then downstream back to the pond. now i see that the pipe is in the tunnel that has holes in it, so the water flows throught, then the big rocks, small rocks, pebbles slowing down the flow with all the bacteria in between and then the supportive bacteria on the way downstream plus plants and algae. the barrel is simply for cleaning the bog. what i can't understand is how u use the barrel and another pump? to clean the bog x) i'm actually getting a small office aquarium for myself and start learning how to manage the nitrogen cicle and enjoy some aquascaping. but the idea i had in mind for the pond is getting clearer and actually more awesome

If you had the possibility of installing an up-flow aquascape type filter with a valve at the bottom for flushing instead of needing a vac pump, would this be a better option?

great job on your videos. I'm still confused about the bog and its orientation to the pond. Is the clean out for the bog next to the pond or away from it? It seems like it should be away from it but that would mean the water coming into the bog would be next to the pond which seems backwards.....

Hey Kev, I have a question regarding the bog filters. I know you said for swimming they should amount to 25% of the pond volume. How big are yours and do you think it is worth it to use something like aquablocks to get the extra water volume? I heard that if a large percentage of water is not exposed to sunlight it can help deter algae blooms. Aquablocks are super expensive, so was considering ways to diy it (with milk crates and then plastic pallets on top)or ideally just use rocks as you have. I would like to use this system to filter water from a 50 m3 of water, just water collected from a small river, the idea is that the wetland (when is full of plants) remove any possible toxic compound the river water can be carry. Do you think it would work..?? thanks

Has anyone in the US been able to source an affordable version of the 'Evertrench'? The only solution I can come up with is ripping a culvert pipe - but they're very expensive. Thoughts/suggestions?

Hi I have a question. I am finishing up on my wetland filter. The size has changed to 6 x 12. I wanted to find out what you thought. I still have to put 3 different sizes of gravel in but when I am finished Should I fill it up with water right away? The reason I am asking this question the fish pond will not be finished for another 2 1/2 months so if I fill the wetland filter bog with water it will just be sitting there with no circulating water.

Great Stuff! I'm in the planning stage of building a bog filter and getting rid of the "pool filter", back flush every three days, and still having slightly cloudy water. I ran across your video with the half pipe and barrel. It seemed like this was an "experiment", and a great idea, to save alot of money, but I couldn't find any "results". Maybe I missed the results video. Was this as good as the aqua block covered intake bog filters? I'm still wondering why aqua blocks are used in the first place. Just a storage place for waste? That's not a pond it's an ocean. "Big green hardware store" 😂. Mine's in trouble. I tried to just use a stream about 3m in length as my filter, it seemed to be working ok. There are swamp Oaks above my pond and they drop alot of needles. I try keep them out as best I can but it's gone kinda rancid and my rocks are turning black. Giving it a good clean out today. 🤞

Can you share details regarding the pump (that fills the bog filter). Should the pump have filter pad materials, bio balls, and a cage around it to pre filter the pond water prior to filling the bog barrel? Also, how do you keep a bog filter from freezing if you're in a more temperate zone? Just starting the planning now...

Hello, have you ever tried to cut a hole on the top of the barrel and let water come into the wetland that way? So you don't need a check valve or breather pipe? Also it's easier for the pump to release water into a big tube than go underwater in a 2" tube. What do you think? Thank you!

Wow I have learned so much studying your videos thank you. I have a question please. I have approx 800/900 gallon pond and want to attempt the bog set up. I have some space to work with not a lot though. Apparently we need the bog to be 30 percent the pond so around 300 gallons or so. We have a lot of fish. Too many in my opinion. My thoughts are to have the intake into a barrel which will flow into an area with liner and rocks which will flow into a river bed. We are talking maybe 4/5 feet from bog with the liner to the pond. I am just not really sure the best method to do a bog which holds 300 gallons. This video buries the barrel which is the bog in conjunction to what flows through the rock bed to the barrel. Any suggestions on a smaller scale to accomplish the 240-300 gallons for the bog with liner. Also does the barrel count into the equation of 30 percent. Hope I did not make this question totally confusing. Many thanks Robin

Hello... I have a comment about the water jets. The way you have it is wrong. You need to leave a piece of pvc pipe after the last jet and cap it. Doing this the volume of water is divided equally into each of the jets. The way you have it, all or much of the volume of water will go thru the last jet and very little through the other jets in the line. Cheers!

Hi Kev. I have my pond up and running now here in Denmark, geographically pretty much opposite you on the globe. I will make a "video" with stills and tell the story once it is all good - and my boy is back in school ;-) Thanks in large part to your excellent KZfaq content, I paid just 2420 Aud for the whole thing! (Plus hours and gas for trips with stones.) The pond is between 2500 and 3000 liters, give or take. Many things work well and I love my pond to bits. Water is clear (again, after the pump had to be replaced) fish seem happy and plants are starting to take off. HOWEVER there is still one nasty bit of trouble I was hoping you might have a solution to: The water going into the bottom of the bog rises in large part up the sides of the hose that goes down into the bottom. So I suspect much filtration potential is lost there. Did you do something clever to avoid this problem?

Looks great. I've been looking at aquascape stuff and think how much!!! the aqua blocs are around £70 in the uk!!. I think it may be worth some for of blocks mainly to help with cleaning out. My question is what pipe did you use for you centipede? I can't find anything similar in the uk, what is it's normal usage or did you cut underground pipe in half?
