Every Game Room or Man Cave needs a stand up arcade machine! This week: We are building and renovating a cheap stand-up arcade cabinet into a death metal black MAME arcade machine for the Metal Jesus Game Room! The original cab is a Centipede machine, front end for MAME is Hyperspin and the controller is the X-Arcade Dual Joystick.

With the popularity of arcade 1up machines this shows how much cooler it is to make your own. This might be my new project after I turn 40 next month. Yours came out awesome! I saw you used the x arcade control boards which are good quality and affordable too.

LIke I mentioned previously... my wife says I have room for one...count 'em: ONE stand up arcade machine. This $35 machine is the one I decided to turn into a MAME machine. It's not rare, or hard to find locally...and honestly, it gets way more use now than as a dedicated Centipede machine in my house.

A day before I released the most recent episode I went over to a friend's house who has the same Centipede cab to shoot the coin insert used in said episode. He's doing the same thing, converting it into a MAME thing. He said the front end was 200 GB alone. He showed it to me and it was cool. Not many ROMs, etc installed yet. His emulators had some v-sync issues but the front end was really smooth. Anyway I'm gonna show him this video and I won't even charge you for the extra view! :)

Nice Build! I've done such in the past complete from scratch and using an old TV in it (does make it look more authentic; eg. original scan-lines without to emulate them). I bought original Arcade controllers from a local dealer, which where the most expensive part, but worth it. It's been some riddling to connect all the dots to make that work in keyboard scheme. Finally i used my Amiga 500 for running it, hidden in the marque to get access to its keyboard if needed. It 20 years ago by now.

I'm speechless (but can still type). No offense, and if you like this and it makes you happy, then great, but this is THE worst butchering of an arcade cab I have ever seen. Even ignoring the option of restoring this to a working centipede cab, which would have been incredibly easy since the cab is clearly in very good condition, not to mention made it something worth some money... there are so many better ways you could have converted this to a mame cab. Your mate clearly has plenty of tools, he could have easily disassembled the X-arcade and mounted it's buttons and sticks in the original metal control panel. There are multiple ways of interfacing a computer with an arcade monitor, none of which are expensive, and you originally wanted a portrait monitor anyway. Why on earth is there a big ugly exposed switch for the marquee light on the front?!? Plug the light into the powerboard inside, or at least put the switch on the back. Those speakers... I guess you at least acknowledge that they are pretty bad. I'd rather have left the peeling vinyl than slop paint on the side with a brush... at least spray it! I'm not really sure what the point of having an arcade cabinet is if it basically looks no better than putting a controller and monitor on a bookshelf. Ok I'm done.

Are you aware that prefacing a comment with "no offense" does not in any way negate the possibility that the comment is offensive. Not that I'm saying your comment is offensive, I actually agree with some of the things you are saying, but saying, "no offense" is a pet peeve of mine. In fact it usually turns an innocuous comment into an offensive comment. No offense of course. :D
@Bork_Cruk
@Bork_Cruk 9 жыл бұрын
Yes well, it seems to be a favourite pet peeve of many people to constantly point out that when people say "no offense" what follows is often offensive. But what is actually meant by "no offense" is: "I'm not saying this for the purpose of being offensive, but if I'm being honest *insert critique here*", so it is an acknowledgement that the opinion one is about to give may cause offense, but convey that one is simply being honest and is sorry for any offense caused. So it is in fact a way of being more tactful and polite, and I don't really understand why people get upset about it, probably because while the sentiment that this abbreviated phrase conveys was once commonly understood, this understanding has been lost over time. How it turns an innocuous comment into an offensive comment is beyond me, I don't see that at all.
@EnigmaHood
@EnigmaHood 9 жыл бұрын
HughWS Here's the thing though. If you have to preface a comment with "No offense", you probably failed in properly constructing an unoffensive comment in the first place. An unoffensive comment is self-evident, you don't have to preface an unoffensive comment with, "no offense" if it truly is an unoffensive comment. And the fact of the matter is, prefacing a comment with "no offense", is now commonly associated with offensive comments, so saying, "no offense" is actually counter-productive, because people are now conditioned to be offended by "no offense" comments. So you're better off just trying to be as unoffensive as possible in your remarks/criticism, without thinking saying, "no offense" will mitigate any hurt feelings.
@Bork_Cruk
@Bork_Cruk 9 жыл бұрын
I disagree with everything you just said and will continue to use this phrase where appropriate.
@EnigmaHood

HughWS So in other words, you are incapable of formulating a cogent argument against my points. You therefore have been intellectually defeated, and in a desperate attempt to save face, you remain obstinate in your irrationality. Of course there is no cure for stupidity unfortunately, and stubborn fools like yourself rather dig their heels in the sand than admit that their position is intellectually bankrupt. No offense of course. :)

Arcade cabs are the best. I converted a non working Thunderblade cab to Mame and it is tons of fun. For all the preservationist, you can often do this without making any real modifications to the cabinet so you can put it back to original condition if you want. That's how mine is, I kept all the original parts. In my opinion, its a lot more usable to have multiple emulators and games.

Man this brings back memories of my childhood as my dad had a few arcade cabinets and 2 of them were in fact centipede and Capcom bowling. Had them set up in our game room with our computers and consoles/tv's back then which is where all the fun was he had his friends over and i had my cousins, nothing like arcades battles and playing Duke Nukem and all the classics in pvp. I was like 4th and 5th grade. Now that i am in my mid 20's i want to eventually build myself a Mame since we don't have them anymore and all my old consoles are gone. One day going to start a collection again though.

Aaah MAME.. The only thing I feel is lacking in the MAME-emulator is the ability to limit your continues. Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that we at no cost finally get to beat games that just ate our money in the arcades when we were kids, but in a way, unlimited credits takes away the sense of challenge and accomplishment that is present (and should be) in games without unlimited continues. You need to have some form of motivating factor, something which tells you that "oh, an extra life? I ACTUALLY need that" ... without it, you can just breeze through a game from start to finish, not caring about creative events and awesome game-mechanics that offer extra lives as a reward for daring feats, etc. I mean, what's the point in that? What is the point in never actually dying? There is no real threat. The games just ask you for more coins and with the press of a button, you feed MAME an unlimited amount. Sure, you can just try to limit yourself in a faux-realistic manner where you tell yourself "I'm only going to play for the amount of five credits, after that, I'm out of money and its game over", but that would be akin to the old wooden PONG-consoles where you yourself had to keep score by sliding sliders to mark out how many points you had. Its a minor complaint, but still, it would be nice if I had the option at least. And I can't imagine that a simple option for a pre-determined limit to how many "coins" you feed the emulator would be all that hard to program.
@capo2k8
@capo2k8 9 жыл бұрын
MetallSwede Totally agree.
@Egobyte83
@Egobyte83 9 жыл бұрын
The thing is, you CAN limit yourself to a certain fixed number of credits which you determine yourself..... but if the game is good, can you really see yourself saying "oh well, I'm out of money now, so I can't play anymore"? ... if the game is good, chances are you wont want to quit. If you are playing something awesome, like an arcade-classic, you have to be FORCED to quit, its the only way. And that would give you extra incentive to do your very best when you play the game.

MetallSwede You are the first person on earth to bitch about unlimited continues. Are you freaking kidding me? So people like you are why sega genesis released an ausome altered beast with zero continues? Have a little discipline instead and turn off the game moron. You have 3,000 games on mame. I'm.not reading the rest of your garbage. Hopefully no one taught your little head what a cheat menu is. ok.ok.....Since clearly you cannot use your head. There are plenty of ways to rig a piggy bank for mame, and have it activated by quarters. No one bothers to. You can even wire one of those cool action piggy banks. Now, or you can have discipline and put it in a coin jar, or slot and push start each time only if you have a quarter.....

I've been a long-time PC enthusiast. Yes, it's bad airflow, but considering what the machine is being used for, it's highly unlikely that the heating would be a problem. It's for stand-up arcade game sessions, not 5-hour long intensive gaming sessions. The games won't be pushing the machine very hard at all. Also, you speak about "aesthetics," but as I mentioned, it's not an issue -- it's hidden inside the cabinet. There are no aesthetics to speak of.
@originaltubebry
@originaltubebry 6 жыл бұрын
I know I'm watching this six years after it posted but I thought I'd offer up some tips for future builds. I'm currently (well, in 2018) in the process of doing exactly what you guys did; convert an original centipede machine to MAME. The part where you're stripping the paint and vinyl off the sides with the original Centipede. You don't need to use a belt sander. You can but as MetalJesus found out, it's a pain in the ass. Just cover both sides of the cabinet with a product called Citristrip then leave it for two days and you can easily peel it right off. If you need to sand small bits off afterward you can. This will work on any vinyl for other old arcade projects too. Also, if you pulled out that light at the top, the original 6x9 speaker is behind it. I replaced the original light with led and it works great. I also bought a small 2.1 sound system and put the smaller speakers behind the light. You guys did great work though! Thanks so much for this video!

X-Arcade?!? Blech! Bad enough you're doing Mame, but to not even do it right?!? Those buttons are HORRIBLE and the sticks aren't much better either! I normally love your videos, but I had to cut it off the moment I heard X-Arcade. With all the options out there, that's just mailing it in. #sadpanda

I got the X-Arcade free from a fan... and it's served me well, and been abused by many people at a ton of our parties. It's fine for what I need.

Knicka Bob I respectfully diagree.. my GF gave me a tankstick pro for DeadBabyJebus Day (aka xmas) and it's a STURDY bit of kit.. Personally I love the buttons and sticks, and it comes with a life time warranty which shows the makers have faith in the build quality.. Which it needs to be due to the ferocious nature of my SF2, III, EX style!

It all depends on the finish. I mean, I made a table-top cabinet, basically like the monitor and joysticks as a standalone unit, and it probably cost less than $150. It helps if you have old stuff, like maybe an old laptop with a broken screen, an old monitor. The cheapest option is to use a USB controller and wire the joysticks to it - real keyboard controllers like X-Arcade can be expensive. Like 14catorce says, it's a lot more fun to build your own, and cheaper.

OPening a beer with any tool including a spoon/ lighter/ knife or really pretty much anything-- a crowbar in this case, is rather easy. You have it about 80% right. 1: grab the beer by the neck with your left hand. 2. place your index finger over the far end of the cap as though it were the support position of the bottle opener. *this is the part you missed* 3. place object under cap 4. pry under cap pushing the cap into the underside of your index finger and using your thumb as the fulcrum for the pry device. 5. consume!

it depends. You can make a really cheap one for 200-400£ depending what you have (monitor, pc, speakers, etc..). If you want to buy a cabinet ready to play, a fair price would be between 800 to 2k£, depending the quality and size of the screen, add-ons... there are plenty of manufacturers in UK, but some of them can charge up to 4k£ for a top quality one. It's allways cheaper and more fun if you build your own machine.

for my mame cab.. all i did for art work was went and bought a good quality poster.. some 3m spray on glue.. and it worked perfect.. i went with a 4 player model, track ball, 4 way joy stick (pack man ) and of course 2 spinners. this turned out to be over kill for what i ended up using my mame cab for. laughs.. it only got used for all the extra stuff during holidays... so gonna give it to my sister... she has 2 kids etc... so it will get used.. and im gonna build a bar top model.. i too went with hyperspin. i went with hyperspin because i like the arcade flash it has.. it gets your attention.. like any good arcade would back in the day.. so on my bartop im gonna build im gonna just go with a 2 player, skullkitty theme.. with a small 3" track ball. i found the track ball worked great for navigating too.. so a built in mouse right on top.. i also think this time im gonna go with all LED buttons/sticks/track ball... im not gonna add a the coin thing this time around... looked cool.. but i never used it.. just left it turn off.. and so yeah.. now i guess you have motivated me to build a new mame cab. its funny i built my original mame cab the same year you did.. i guess it was the thing we all did back then eh :D home deopt to buy some partical board this weekend maybe.. probably go with a 20" monitor.. and i have a few old pc laying around.. hard part i guess with a bartop is making them fit.. where the full size i had to much room.. everyone should build a mame cab itheya re great fun. :) and if you are on the fence of what to build. i say build a bartop first.. but that is what i think after owning a full size..

They could use a cheap flat screen tv (Dirt cheap nowadays) as monitor instead of the skinny screen view, plexi glass replacement from Home Depot cut trim to fit. Wonder if they tried the beer by the Heavy Metal band Amon Amarth. Heard its suppose to be pretty good.

I'm thinking of building a small table top MAME machine running Hyperspin using a a spare netbook with maxed out ram, and building a cab around it with some simple USB controllers I can swap out as needed as I don't have a lot of space in my house, and want too keep the budget for it down as well.

You can make your own control panel with buttons and joysticks from Happ Controls wired into a keyboard encoder from Hagstrom Electroncs. Easy stuff. You can put a trackball on there to operate the mouse too.

Actually, MAME is capable of emulating Capcom Bowling and Centipede. So it's more like taking an old Rock-ola Jukebox, sprucing it up with custom artwork, and allowing it to play MP3s while still preserving its original function.

I built basically this identical machine back in 2004-2005, using an old Taito cabinet. I decased a 19" CRT monitor for the project, but if I had to do it now it would be LCD all the way. I need to build a new one actually, sold the original to my contractor.

Big fan of metal Jesus, nice easy covert, i do not use xarcade just because of price, however, it works and they are quality.just because the cab is not suited for one person it doesnt mean its not suited for the other person. Its a strong assumption to say that metal Jesus saved the ball controller or gave it away for another project. Nice convert. I enjoyed the video.
