Some answers to Frequently Asked Questions below; hope these help ... feel free to ask any questions;
- The layout is approx 7m by 4.5m (22ft by 14ft)
- The layout is currently DC Analogue, however has future provision to convert to DCC.
- The OLE is only for cosmetic purposes; the pantograph heights on some loco’s have been set just below the wire height; others still to set.
- The layout has been approx 13yrs so far in development; but still plenty to-do.
- The layout is based within the U.K. along the West Coast Main Line somewhere around Stafford - Crewe - Warrington area between mid 1980s to early 2000s.

So great to see long trains going round a curve without the "uh-oh it's a model" giveaway of coaches at almost 45 degree angles to one another. I know its unavoidable in many situations, but to see your trains with only a gentle bend between them is so good! Wonderful modelling. Thanks for sharing and for the inspiration.

Many thanks for the lovely comment, and glad you like the longer sweeping curves! I always liked seeing trains go round Queensville curve (just south of Stafford station) and I know what you mean about some layouts having curves that appear too tight (although often understandable due to space constraints) … so when I designed DP I tried to have larger sweeping curves. While looking better, they are also often more reliable. I also included transitions between the straights and curves. To accommodate the larger radius curves, I included the board cut-outs that lower in each corner to allow good access, also for different viewing angles. Glad you enjoyed! Kind regards, Mark

What an excellent way to document your progress on this stunning layout, its the first I think I have seen of this, very impressed. It’s great to see someone stick to their plans and enhance further a layout of this size without ripping up bits, shows you know what works for you. A nice mix of kit and scratch built projects too, works well. See there might be a garden to shed extension! A really enjoyable video, thank you. Best regards Stephen

Many thanks Stephen for the lovely comment and compliments … glad you enjoyed! I’m so glad I took a decent amount of time to plan the layout and allowed provision for a few extension projects below the layout over time … a garden railway extension is tempting … although the recent O Gauge loco’s and stock are tempting! Still a few projects to do before then … and need to be a bit more prudent these days as well … but watch this space! Thanks again, Mark

Many thanks for the lovely comment! Yes … I have had a bit of a vision and plan over time … to mainly focus upon the build of the base layout, reliability, then more rolling stock projects with detailing areas over time … revisiting parts of the layout to detail, as well as extending the layout below to add additional storage yards. I’m pleased that the base layout as originally laid has remained reliable and functional … so glad I spent several months planning the track plan! Wish I had taken some pictures of the iterations … at one stage the whole shed floor was pretty much covered in lining paper! 👍

Many thanks Dave and yes … it does sound like you were one of the early subscribers! Glad you enjoyed the Model Rail article and the build history video … it’s been quite slow but steady progress over time (compared to say Pete Waterman’s Making Tracks layouts that are massive and built in only a few months) … but work and family and life etc get in the way, so it’s been a steady but fun hobby … 👍

@@ModelRailway Thank you for your reply, yes, your right, it has to be a fun hobby, else why bother, unless it's your livelihood. My own current layout has been coming together over about the same 10 year time period. I do a load, then work and family needs slow things down, they come first obviously. Then I loose interest for a bit, then come back to it, but I've had no need to change the track plan, which says something I guess. My current layout is by far the most complete, I enjoy the track laying and wiring, but it's simple stuff compared to yours. Scenery has taken me a bit outside my comfort zone, but I'm quite pleased with the results so far. Just spent about 9 months replacing my Metcalfe buildings with Scalescenes download ones...............Anyway Thanks again and all the best Dave.

Thanks Alan for the comment and compliment … and good luck with turning your own ideas and plans into reality! Am lucky and glad that I have been able to. I’m mainly from a track engineering background but have awareness of other disciplines … it’s a bit of a compromise so quite a few overlaps a tad too short! haha! I do like seeing the Heathcote modules control the signalling sequence … thanks again! 👍

In a word? BREATHTAKING! I had no idea quite how much you'd put into building this layout. Trust me, it was worth all your time and effort. You're one of my favourite modellers to watch. When's the shed extension coming to extend the track to Davidson Main? 1
@ModelRailway
@ModelRailway Жыл бұрын
Haha! Funny enough I have thought about what to do next … I do like the engineering type stages of planning and construction compared to the more artistic stages of scenery and details … am not too sure about the feasibility of an extension … but perhaps a garden railway with a tunnel entrance to the shed! 😜 Watch this space! 👍

Such attention to detail - so precise and elaborate. What a magnificent piece of art and this beautifully showcases the evolution through time. Well done. I am reconstructing my model railway to make it somewhat better, but it will never be as good as this. Perhaps because I’m not willing to take the time out and play the ‘waiting’ game in respect to the end product. I’m in a quandary here, but what I’m saying is that my model railway will never be as good as yours, so it’s not even worth trying. Alex

Many thanks for the lovely message and compliments Alex. I’ve felt like that before and lost my modelling mojo at times … but realised a key thing to remember is that modelling is meant to be a hobby … every layout has strengths and weaknesses … and the main thing is that if it gives you personal enjoyment, it can be so good for mental health and well-being. Try not to force modelling as well, only do it when you enjoy it, have the mojo … and have breaks from modelling as well … can really help! Good luck with reconstructing your layout … and enjoy! 👍

Thanks for the comment and glad you enjoyed. I’m glad I’ve added a second layer and lucky to have had the space to have a ramp with a steady gradient and allowed a decent height between the layers. I know others have used Helix’s and they can look good and work well if space is more limited 👍

I know what you mean! I didn’t load my layout onto RMWeb or KZfaq for many years as i saw the standard of other layouts … but over time as further details were added, and a few family and friends complimented it … then I took the plunge! I think having build it I know where the faults and flaws are! No layout will ever be perfect I guess … but the real railway is never perfect either! Always something that needs to be done … and hope your layout provides plenty of enjoyment 👍

Many thanks for the comment and compliment! Sure, the brick viaducts are Metcalfe card kits. I cut the height to size, as well as widening some of them and cutting the back (to allow the viaduct to be curved) … hope that helps! 👍

Many thanks … I follow quite a few other layouts and channels both on here and RMWeb and too many faves to list! Plenty of inspiration … and yes, I’ve not properly started to weather the loco’s or rolling stock yet … have mainly concentrated on the layout build over time, then gradually getting the newer loco’s and rolling stock rakes assembled … then going forward will be a mix of rolling stock and layout mini projects 👍

Many thanks David for the comment, glad you enjoyed! Good probing questions as well!! So … a) It’s tricky! With work/career, family etc …. but it’s also good for mental health and well-being to escape to the man-cave shed! b) That is probing!! I’m lucky to have worked hard to get a decent career and role, also to have bought many of the items when prices were much less. I also am quite prudent, so don’t waste money on other vices like smoking or gambling etc! It’s a balance tho, some of the new releases do look tempting but am resisting! c) I’ve subscribed to several magazines for a long time, plenty of tips in those … also am a member on RMWeb, also follow KZfaq … so much inspiration about. Some is trial and error as well …. hope that helps! 👍

Many thanks for the compliment. The layout is approx 7m by 4.5m (22ft by 14ft) … I keep forgetting to mention it within the videos! Yes, I am considering trying DCC in the future … I’ve tried to concentrate on developing the base layout and rolling stock up to now but have allowed conversion to DCC at some stage. It would cost a lot though adding chips to the loco’s, also would need to find a system where I can easily control multiple trains at the same time. Watch this space! 👍

@ModelRailway
@ModelRailway Жыл бұрын
Many thanks for the lovely comment! Thankfully the shed doesn’t suffer from any damp … the blocks are quite dense, they were treated with an anti-damp paint … the shed is well ventilated and a dehumidifier also helps. The only issue I had over time was the original roof did begin to leak a bit … so a few years ago the boards and felt were replaced and no problems since! Glad you enjoyed the video! 👍

The exception being Virgin Trains (as I worked within WCRM and enjoyed many trips aboard them) … but never say never! I do like the Cross Country silver HST livery and travelled many miles aboard them … but managed to resist so far! 👍
