After running our little railway for a few months in its current format it was time to take things up a little and add some elevation. As a modelling novice I was a little daunted by the whole idea but join me as once again i go steaming in without too much planning and try tackle this uphill climb.

Welcome to the nicer part of life! 😀 Age is a good thing that way, nobody is actually wanting you to accomplish stuff. Just take your time with the railway, it'll grow at the same pace as yourself.

😄 couldn't agree more. Im loving the slower pace of life i must say... less time stresssing over things and far more time drinking tea. Much nicer 😂

Nice video, nice work, there is something much more relaxing about railway modelling than other hobbies I have (including motorcycles!)

Riser strips seems great, I just used scrap timber to make legs and 9mm thick ply to make a ramp. A digital angle gauge was a lifesaver, I accidentally had part of my ramp at around 4 degrees which my locos absolutely did not like.

Ahhhh thats an idea! a digital angle gauge!.. that would be handy... its amazing that the slightest degree too much causes major issues.. i guess when it's scaled up that 1 or 2 degrees actually becomes a huge change lol. Im not sure on degrees but the incline i had to go for with the layout size constraints was 3% I've kept the corners flat though... infigured the locos would definitely start complaining trying to turn and climb at the same time 😂😂

😂😂😂 its like a packet of biscuits... once you start you just have to keep going! 😂😂 ... wow! 3x8x6 meters!! I bet you told the senior management it would only be a small layout when you first started 😂😂😂

Nice one! I do love an incline if you can manage one in the space you have. It transforms a flat Earth feel into something really three dimensional and there are many examples in the real world too. I'm looking forward to part 2. I'm starting again after my failed loft layout which was never going to work due to the constraints of money and time - let alone the inhabitability of the loft space.

Hi Garry.. i know exactly what you mean about the 3-dimensional thing... even though im only half way round at the moment its already brought the whole thing to life. So have you got somewhere else to build your layout now chap? I remember you saying the loft was potentially going to be an issue.

@@shedmouthjunction without a lot of money and time on insulation and velux windows it's a bit rubbish. So, I'm going to build something a little (lot 🙄) more modest. I think it's going to be on a board which can sit on the dining room table but be taken off when it's for - erm, "dining" lol. I know, I know it's not ideal but taking the old adage, "there's no such thing as not enough room for a railway layout" it will at least give me a chance to restart my hobby. To that end I'm seriously looking at N gauge. As I mentioned before, the new TT120 looks very interesting, but N is really well established already. I'm getting the Peco N gauge track plans book for my birthday to give me ideas. I did dabble with N about 20 years ago but always found it rather toy like. The advances in quality and realism since have been remarkable though?

@P. Garry Ball Thats great Garry! I had a close look at some N gauge a few days ago and i have to say i was blown away at the level of detail they pack into such a small thing! Absolutely incredible! Likewise the TT120. I think its a perfect idea using the Dining room table mate.. it will keep the interest in the hobby going for you 100%. Running locos and modeling in general is such a break from the everyday life stresses. It's going to be brilliant fun regardless of size or scale. Keep me posted boss! I'd love to hear how things move on over time for you!

@@shedmouthjunction I've been experimenting with "SCRAM" the last couple of days. It's an easy to use layout planning software without the steep learning curve of Xtracad. I've put a pic of my first go on my flickr album and an operational timetable. Tried to share it but KZfaq bot deleted the entire comment etc 🙄. Sorry, I'll have to find another way to show my shenanigans

Hello from Norway. I am so happy that I have found you, I do not know if my husband will say the same, since he will be the one making the incline. We bought a few years ago, a Lionel O gauge Polar Express for our Christmas village, and I would love to do something different with it, than just going around through the town. Besides getting to learn how to make the incline, I would like to ask you something. In my mind I have a vision of having the train going on a track shaped something like an O in one end after that a Y shape track followed by straight tracks towards another Y ending in an O. I do not know if you understand what I mean , hopefully you do. Is that possible ? Thank you in advance for your help.
