In this video, I will explain the plan for my next guitar build. This one will be a neck through design, with a twist! If you would like to help support my channel and get something cool in return, please consider:

I'm just finding you a year after this video. I LOVE your knowledge and input! Maybe you'll never see this, but as a woodworker, Titebond, along with your design.....I'm SURE will make it so much stronger!

"The Pucker Factor". Love it! At least with CNC you can do a trial cut on some much cheaper timber to test your G-code. Another way to cut the control cavity cover slightly undersize without the slowness of a 1/16" bit is to lie about the size of your tool (All men are good at this but you're going to claim it's SMALLER than it really is!). Do a standard outside profile cut with a 1/4" bit but tell the software the bit diameter is only 3/16". That way it will cut 1/32" inside the drawn line, just as you want but at 5m/min in a single pass. Obviously the same trick can be used for any clearance you want without having to use an impractically small diameter tool to create it. I really like the way you are taking full advantage of having the CNC router available to build designs that would be far too difficult and time consuming without it. That's exactly what I'm doing.

Fascinating project. I would imagine this being insanely difficult without a CNC! Oh and wishing you a speedy recovery.

Looks like an interesting design. I would suggest magnets to hold the Control Cavity Cover in place. It's a much more elegant look. Looking forward to the build. Have you considered a simple way to mount, install and remove the Pickups from the back of the guitar? This would eliminate the need to remove the strings when finding/testing Pickups that work well on a particular guitar.

Very cool design! This would be a perfect guitar to try a richlite fretboard. You can get one that looks just like ebony, but harder and easier maintenance. Or you can one with some cool designs that go well with that “hour glass” shape of the neck through. I don’t think I will ever go back to wood fretboards after trying richlite.

I bought a slab of Padauk for $20 that will yield 6 fretboards.

Ambitious design but very creative for a neck through design. IMO most neck through designs have a very 80s look especially with the use of a laminated wood neck. This should be a great series to follow. Hope you are feeling better.

Sounds like a great build. Funny you should mention roasted maple: I just started a "puzzle" (snare) drum build using roasted maple. Good chance I will have a build series for it in the next month.

I doubt I'm pointing out anything you haven't considered, but any concerns with the neck pickup route creating a weak spot (before gluing) at the base of the neck? If so, maybe a one pickup design or route after gluing? Anyway, it's an interesting concept!
@HighlineGuitars
@HighlineGuitars Жыл бұрын
That's why I do a 3D mockup. My original design was too thin in that spot, so I did some math and beefed it up a bit. It'll be fine.

I was thought the point of an thru-neck guitar was to deal with the potential loss of tone at the neck-to-body joint. But creating a bizarre shape where the wings join the central part of the body is adding another potential tone issue - why do it?
@HighlineGuitars
@HighlineGuitars Жыл бұрын
In an electric guitar, tone comes from the pickups. In an acoustic guitar, tone comes from the wood and the method of construction.

A Hipshot Babygrand bridge would look nice on that. I like the swirl wood design. Would that give more gluing surface contact area than a straight cut?

All bridges should be recessed to allow for full adjustment of the action. I think the nut should be like a bridge too, to adjust string height and length.
@y007p3
@y007p3 Жыл бұрын
This raises an interesting question with regards to neck pocket depth in standard Fender style designs. I’ve always felt that the measurements that are seen as standard mean that you have to crank up the action on the bridge more than is optimal. I’m missing many factors no doubt, but I’m no engineer 😂
