I tried to buld a better birkeland eyed reactor and made some nitric acid aswell as potassium nitrate.

I saw a setup on YT of similar size, but using two 2-inch neodymium magnet blocks on either side, and the arc spread out into a pancake. They had to make a sturdy frame to keep the magnets in place, though.

The Norwegians tried this process on an industrial scale with some success BUT even with nearly free hydro electricity it was too slow and too expensive and the process was abandoned in favour of oxidising ammonia etc. The most useful improvement on the amateur scene is to spread out the arc with magnets so that all air in the reactor passes through the arc.

Looks like I have to put my birkeland experiment back together and make a video... it's quite similar but I only made pictures before storing it for "further improvements in the not so near future".

5:27 Use another step that produces water steam that mixes with the NOx. I believe that would take care of the NOx that escapes in the bubbler.

Have you measured your yield in grams / kWh? I'm struggling to get more than 3-4 g/kWh with mine even with multiple bubblers, etc. I suspect that spreading the arc with magnetic fields would probably bring the whole thing closer to the 60 g/kWh benchmark.
@thesciencefurry
@thesciencefurry 6 ай бұрын
Unfortunately I don't have a kWh Meter but given that I had a 28 hour long run at lets say 75 watts(I said in the video it was between 70 and 80W) and a yield of 13,2g this would be 0,2 kWh per gram I think. The proplem I described in the video is that spreading the arc visually decreased the amount of nitrous oxides being produced. At 9:22 I explained that. And turning the magnet around makes the arc hotter. Which makes sense that this increases the yield because we need the temperature of the arc for the reaction. From what I've seen the Oswald process supposed to be more efficient. Which makes sense you just need a source of ammonia, a bit of thermal energy to get the catalyst started and some energy to pump the ammonia through the system. I did buy some materials for it, but idk when i get to build that. Maybe you have more time and get a video out faster than me ;) If you want to go this way.

Hey I may be late but I've been planning on building my own reactor for the fun of it and I thought of using a nanobubble "generator"(it's just a venturi pulling the gas into a stream of water) to get a lot of surface area because I've seen that even using bubble stones the gas spends very little time in the water. The downside I've encountered is the fact that I'd need an acid proof pump to be able to do this and I haven't found any so I'm thinking I'll have to copy a submersible aquarium pump but adapting it to the new requirements. Don't know if this'll help much but at least it's a new approach so it may spark some ideas Good luck!

ideas for imporvement which i've used my self: 1) put the arch directly above the air inlet hole because the air stream will push in new air faster into the arch making more NOx gasses 2) get a taller, thinner bottle, it improves the absorption rate by a ton 3) you dont need liquid cooling if instead of running thick copper pipes ans using them as the electrodes you rater have thin steel wire used for grilling to hold a thick-ish piece of metal like a screw, by the time the heat travels down the wire it will have cooled down enough to not be a problem, like i use hot glue which can take less heat than epoxy 4) dont use copper inside at all, they will degrade quickly because air has water in it which will turn into nitric acid in the chamber eating them over time, use steel instead (like screws and steel wire from point 3). 5) pump air into the solution for a while because a bunch of ur acid will be nitrous acid, meaning it will make potassium nitrite not nitrate. tough this machine makes ozone too which does help in turning nitrous into nitric on its own. also a remark.. how is this not efficient exactly? i pay under 2 usd for 500ml of around 9% strength acid meaning i make 45g of acid for under 2 usd so idk what you doing wrong, or electricity is cheap in norway, who knows

Microwave oven transformers produce enough amps to kill you. Also, they'll trip the breaker in the panel if wired directly as it's basically creating a dead short. Now, if you can ballast the transformer and limit the current running through them it might be possible, but remember, if you fk up and accidentally touch the wrong thing, your dead. So yeah, not really a good idea if you don't have experience and don't really know what you're doing.

Hello friend, I have a question. Can I include direct outlet electricity with an extension cord to arc? We use 240v 16 amps here. It's not even worth 4 kW. If I create a direct arc, will it be used to produce nitric acid and what will be the efficiency? For example, how many grams can I produce in 1 hour and will the hourly consumption be as much as 4 kW on the electricity bill?

@@thesciencefurry So if I run an extension cord into the outlet and create an arc, will I trip the circuit breakers? So, in your opinion, 240v 16 amp produces a power close to 4 kW, is it possible to produce nitric acid with it? wikipedia says it is possible for 5 kw.
@thesciencefurry
@thesciencefurry 4 ай бұрын
@@kasmekmen7564 Yes it will trip the circuit breaker. Also the voltage is very low so the arc lenth would be unter a mm wich is not great. Wikipedia describes the industrial process. Like in the video you can best do it with a high voltage transformer.
