This video is a follow up on the rabbit hutch I build a year ago for less than $50.00. I have included some of the feed back I have received and several ideas on how to improve the design. I am still willing to give these blue print out to anyone that wants them, just email me and ask for them. goodson.charlie@gmail.com

I have seen many comments on this video saying to switch to a solid floor. Yes, it is better on there feet. However can cause other health problems as urine can seep into the wood and cause bacteria and ammonia to collect, which will kill the rabbit. Also, an entire rabbit (not fixed) is impossible to litter box trained, especially bucks as they do spray. An area for them to rest is great, however large areas of wood flooring is very bad. Plus it isn't natural either as there feet will slide on it, which also cause problems with the feet. As long as they have a resting board and there nails are trimmed once a month, wire floors are not harmful to your rabbits. And just watch them carefully, if sore hocks is caught early, there will be more problems. You can patch them up with some medicine for pets and bandages.

You are very welcome. I have tried all variations of housing for my rabbits. I have even had a rabbit die from using solid floor hutches, so we try using as little wood as possible in our new hutches.
@bboutdooradventures491

Elu Niabi yes I no longer will use wood in my hutches either. It has taken me time to develop and learn. Wire cages with non wood resting pads.
@eluniabi5098
@eluniabi5098 6 жыл бұрын
I also try not using wood resting pads as many of my current rabbits like to use them as there "litter box" so to speak. I try to get ceramic tile for resting boards as I can easily rinse it off when needed, however this can get expensive if you have a lot of rabbits. But defiantly good in the long run as you don't have to replace them as often. The only thing I have to say with using tiles, though, is you have to watch your rabbits and make sure they aren't trying to chew on them. I've heard that rabbits can break there teeth on them, but luckily I haven't had this problem. If they would chew on them, then wooden resting boards are defiantly the way to go.

Thank you, I agree with this so much. Everyone always tells me to use wood because wire will give them sore hocks, But I have a rabbit who had Urine scalding from his previous owner's wood flooring. Wire is the best so they aren't sitting in their droppings and pee. Wood flooring is defiantly a no-no option.

layla meek having raised a lot of rabbits I have come to prefer wire bottom cages. Rabbits also seem to like them better. But if you do not like wire bottom cages it would be easy enough to just put plywood on the entire bottom of the cage. I encourage modifying the plans to meet your own needs.

L unan rabbits live inside? In nature they dig a hole in the ground and live in their burrows. I guess that could be considered inside. As humans have domesticated rabbits some people have raised them as pets and kept them in side but many pet owners do not keep rabbits in the house. We raise our rabbits for show rabbits, also for meat and fur. Inside would not be a good option for us. Their fur is much better if raised out side where it is cooler. This helps with both showing them and if we harvest the fur. I have kept several rabbits in the house and still do when it is needed but they do much better outside.

When we had our rabbit in an outdoor hutch in the winter, we got a heated bowl to avoid the freezing problem. Probably not too practical or cost-effective since you have several hutches and you'd have to get heavy-duty outdoor extension cords (we had some laying around since our family is big on Christmas lights) and several of the bowls, but it saves you and the rabbits the trouble of clearing out ice.

@Kaylee Smith Even if it doesn't cause sore hawks, it is very uncomfortable as they do not have padding on their feet.Also rabbits being in small cages under 4ft by 4ft is overally just plain cruel.rabbits are very active and need alot of space. I know damn well you wouldn't keep a dog in a crate or cage all day.rabbits being in a cage is fine, only if it's big enough. Also, bunnies should never be outside as there are so many risks.

Hey, this is bad. Rabbits can’t walk on wire because they get a thing called sore hawks it’s an infection on their feet kinda like bumblefoot, and they can also get their nails stuck in the wire. They need to be free roamed.

Nice design! I see alot of comments about the mesh floor. Guys, its REALLY not that bad. I suggest a few minor changes. I would replace that wood section of the floorand screen the whole floor area. Then provide a removable wood or paving (large, flat) stone and place it in the center. Attach it from below through the mesh if its wood. This gives the rabbit a place to rest thats off the wire, yet maintains mesh where its really needed..the CORNERS! Rabbits prefer to use the corners to urinate especially. Mesh is cooler for the rabbit, so dont be surprised if they rarely sit on the island. Where the wood is placed in this design is bad, they will urinate on it there and it will soak into the wood and ammonia up the cage.

I understand that this video is a few years old by the time I'm reading this, but I would suggest having wired "window(s)" of sorts near the top of the full wooded enclosure. Rabbits need air flow, I would imagine if you were to breed rabbits in this cage they would make a nest in that full wooded half of that cage. This change will prevent ammonia buildup, along with drilling small holes on the bottom of the wood floors. Hope these changes make sense and I'm eager to see what you can create in the future.

Silly people commenting about wire floors that know nothing about rabbit care. Kept rabbits all my life. my rabbits had acces to a patio but choose to go into their wire floor cage just to go pee, rabbits don't like to get their feet urine soaked. Give them a little area in the cage with wire so it can serve as a toilet. you"re rabbit will thank you, the rest of the cage can be wood flooring.

Tip: Change the wire, it can give bunnies sore hocks. And bottles are not natural, if you put a dish and a water bottle in there cage it's very much likely that they will use the dish more. And rabbits drink as much as a small dog, not only that they can get dehydrated from them.

I really like the hutch, but is there a way to add a slow lowering cord or sorts for the door so it doesn't just crash open. and what else can we do to the corners of the roof where it meets the cage so there isn't agape? We have pet rabbits but there are outside and I would like them to stay as safe as possible considering there under a large douglas pine and not against the house. (outdoor dog, helps) but would love to make sure rabbits are well off fi dog is in for the night due to weather etc. also, where do I get the plan for this hutch. I really like it. thank you for your time in making them. :)

Please STOP with the 'natural is better' rubbish...even solid floors can give rabbits sore hocks. Hey dude so this is a really nice outdoor cage design and all and the cold and stuff can be easily masked by towels in the winter but if you’ve had rabbits than you should know that rabbits shouldn’t have wire flooring. No matter the size. They will get sore hocks and it will take multiple vet visits to “fix”. So you need to buy some towels and put them over the wire or replace the cage entirely.

Kylie Gilliam thanks for sharing you thoughts. I have raised hundreds of rabbits and tried several different flooring options. It is my professional opinion that wire bottom cages are by far the best option for flooring. I know that if done right there are other flooring options that work just fine. If you prefer to not use wire floors that is just fine. Even with this design it would be very easy to just make the floor solid. It is actually harder to make wire floors than wood floors but I feel it is worth the extra effort.

Benjamin Goodson I understand that this is your opinion I just fear your rabbit WILL get sore hocks. Maybe you’ve never taken them to the vet and that’s why you don’t know. I think that maybe you should... 1) provide space off of the wire so they can avoid sore hocks themselves 2) do some research on your rabbits before you post things like this and potentially harm you rabbits

Kylie Gilliam I always always always provide places for them to get off the wire. I have talked to several vets. And I have done a ton of research. And both solid floors and wire bottom cages work well for rabbits cages. If you prefer a solid bottom cage that will work just fine. If you want further information on the proper care rabbits go to Arba.net. (The America rabbit breeders association).

Does anyone know of it's a good idea to replace the mesh for thick glass like plactic? For better insulation. Cheers

Nice idea but Im not sure if it will be ideal for rabbits. With some minor adjustments, I may use your idea for a chicken coop.
