This was a custom order I received through my etsy store, its Red Oak with a Walnut band through the front back and top.
Originally I was going to mount the hinges on the inside of the lid and bottom but the wood was too thin and the screws punched through the sides. whoops so thats why magically some walnut plugs appear in the routers holes for the hinges.
Any questions, screams or yells feel free to leave a comment if you're interested in seeing any of the other stuff I've built you can find me on etsy and facebook at JoelTurnerDesigns and the other videos here on my channel.
Thanks for watching

Excellent video and extremely helpful... like the way you attached the box hinges. I did gasp when I saw how close you hand was to your mitre saw blade but you are obviously very skilled and in complete control... lovely box thanks.

Great job. i made a beautiful box for my wife. I was so proud of how it turned out, but when I put the hinges on I screwed up. I will use your tricks next time. Thanks

Nice little box. I was wondering why you made those nice little inlaid hinge mortises. :)

There are two different boxes the hinge placement is better when it's on the inside. Very nice peace

Good job, but thing that stood out for me was that this build was real life build for me. I also have somewhat messy shop, althought everything has its place. But I liked your things on the table your scrapwood pile in the background. After all its about making and not looking pretty in the video 😉

I'm usually not a fan of sped up footage, but the fact that your miter saw sounds like a squeaky door amuses me no end.

Or the random orbital sander that sounds like a router lol. At first I was like you don't route in a circle back and forth pattern. Then I saw the sanding pad.

You routed for the hinges to be hidden and then it clearly shows you mounting them on the outside. Then at the end of the video, you had them actually mounted on the inside. Which is it??

Did I miss something here because that looks like and end grain to long grain joint where the oak attaches to the walnut piece in the middle? I don't recall seeing dowels or biscuits or something at the joint to strengthen it. Maybe I made a mistake, not sure? I realize that a joint like that isn't a high stress joint, it's just a box to hold some personal things but even so, I would have used some reinforcement. Is it lapped perhaps?

garriv777 you didnt. Not the way i would have done it. But the joint reallyndoesnt have to be that strong here. Its only a small box

Nice job...why did you mortise cut the box but surface mount the hinges? Would they not fit in the mortises?

screw punched out the side, even with pilot hole, was just a little too close. I would of just made another one if the customer wasnt in a huge rush.

Any reason as to why you didn't pur the hinges in the dados made by the router?
@lyrebirdfurniture522
@lyrebirdfurniture522 8 жыл бұрын
+Andrew LaBelle Because the screw went in wonky and punched out the side of the box, so it was just a "crap gotta fix this" moment. The client needed it quick like bunny so I didnt have to time to make another one. But they were happy with the end product.

@@lyrebirdfurniture522Hi. I bought something called a "Speedfit" Pilot Drill made by Kobalt for this very reason. Different sizes and they have a beveled end to fit in the beveled hinge holes for centering and an adjustable depth pilot drill (you'll need a small Allen key for adjustment) that's spring loaded for starting the hole. Unless you have a drill press, you still have to hold it perpendicular to the piece but at least it centers it in the middle of the hinge holes. I use this especially when the material is thin like the very nice box you built. Got mine at Home Depot for $5-$6 each but had trouble finding them on HD's website. An image search on Google for Kobalt # 0486264 will let you see what I'm referring to. This number is for a #5-6 screw and has a 5/64" pilot drill. I'm sure there are ones made better (this one is made in China) but no more than I use mine, they do the trick. Good luck and again, nice work.

I've watched a few of your videos. thanks for sharing. I'm somewhat new to woodworking but I'm a sign maker. I like your ideas however, I feel like your fingers are a bit too close to the blade when you're cutting the lid off the boxes. Just a bit too close for my comfort but I guess everyone's comfort zone is different. lol. stay safe and once again, thank you for sharing.

+Raul Padilla Its a comfort level thing, and the lens compression makes it look closer than it actually is. Someone said or a read if you ever feel uncomfortable about a cut dont do it. I had a friend lose 3 fingers in a tablesaw a couple years ago so im pretty careful now.

Gluing long grain to end grain is weak because the glue absorbs at different rates and that makes a cross grain situation that won't last. Also glue alone is weak without a mechanical joining technique like tenons, dovetails, or dowels ect.

Yes, on something a lot bigger that would be an issue, even more so if it was in a place with wild humidity changes. But this is a really small box, and i've got one sitting on my dresser that was the prototype to that one in the video, and its been there for over 3 years now and the wood hasnt moved or warped or twisted or exploded. But I have made larger versions of that box and I use biscuits if i have to run the grain perpendicular, or if i've got the wood to do it, just run everything parallel .

it is perfect for a coffin. you can bury your hamster in it. i'm sure this box its long gone. Dude have you ever heard about wood movement and not to glue end grain to long grain, have you ever heard about splines? finishing after mounting hinges, etc etc etc omfg everyone is a woodworker now "stealing" money from people that actually think they buy quality.
@lyrebirdfurniture522

I've had one sitting on my dresser i built before this one, so 5+ years ago since this video is 5 years old. And nothings changed on it due to wood movement. Also if this was a table or something ya, but its a box, its a cheap box built out of scraps. Other bigger boxes that i've built the same way as this one i biscut jointed everything together between the edge and long grains.

Wood movement is not a worry on small scale projects. No real stresses on small boxes either, hence no "need" for splines. Nice detail touch though, I use them a lot.
