Building a Schwimmwagen river crossing diorama somewhere on the Eastern front. Materials used include: XPS foam, Vallejo acrylic mud products, epoxy resin, and grass tufts. Includes weathering the Tamiya Schwimmwagen Type 166, painting German WW2 oak leaf uniform camouflage, building a wire frame tree, and creating a river from epoxy resin. I also get to recover from a rather nasty mistake when using the two-part resin.... You can buy the Schwimmwagen kit here: www.hlj.com/1-...

I know it was a shame to lose the river bed detail (and a great save there by the way) but to be honest most river banks look murky brown anyway. I think it looks fantastic as it turned out 👍

Well this is what I call a fortunate accident... I have a paper model of a PTS-M amphibious tracked carrier, and I was thinking of making a diorama of a 1997 flood in Poland, which would require me to partially cover it with water; but, because it's a paper model, resin was out of the question. With this video in mind, I'm now considering priming it with a paper varnish, inserting it in a hole in a styrene base, pouring a thin layer of plaster around it, then painting it light brown and covering everything with medium gel, to imitate the murky browny waters brought by the flood. Should work about fine.

I think it turned out great despite the issues ! And honestly the wheels would've kicked up a whole mess of soot and dirt as it entered the river. I rode in one of these at a military airshow / reenactment day, years ago (on land only). Very interesting vehicle for sure. They are surprisingly smoother to ride in then the allied Willys MB & DUKW.

Hi Tony. You're surely right (I have no reason to disbelieve you :) ). That's definitely an area where I am a bit slack - checking for little details like that, and making sure units are in diorama settings appropriate to the front they actually fought on.

Just the air trapped in it did you use the flame torch over the top of the resin when it was wet to release the air bubbles? Just one of them small kitchen flame torches does it fine but abit of the AK water foam for waves would have fixed it it's just one of those things I think we have all experienced at somepoint when something is going to good eh! There's always something that stops us haha, That's what modelling is all about though now you have that experience and a fix for if it happens again in future it only betters us as modellers! Well done though looks good 👍it's happened to me aswell I done the same painted it merky green with a small top layer of resin over that and that AK foam water stuff for making white horses (waves)
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd Жыл бұрын
Thanks Charlie. Yeah, I've seen the flame method but tbh this was my own fault for using cheap generic resin - this wasn't so much a few bubbles as a runaway exothermic reaction - it even melted the model kit plastic! That'll teach me not to be a cheapskate!
@tomtruesdale6901
@tomtruesdale6901 3 жыл бұрын
Very nice work and a great 'save' of the river. Any idea what happened to cause all those bubbles?
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd 3 жыл бұрын
It was a runaway thermal reaction I think. The curing resin creates heat which causes it to cure quicker, which generates more heat.

I want to try and do epoxy resin dioramas and I'm scared for that to happen , those mass amont of bubbles forming how can I prevent this?
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd 3 жыл бұрын
The main problem is heat generated by the resin as it sets. I had a very limited choice of resins to choose from, and it turns out this version produced a lot of heat. I'd recommend 'low heat' ones if you can find them, plus doing a test pour to a similar depth.

Is it difficult working with the water like resin? I’ve never done it myself but am checking videos to learn how to and have never seen that result on any video that I’ve watched.
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd 4 жыл бұрын
Depending on the type, resin can produce a lot of heat as it cures. The heat speeds up the curing, which creates more heat and causes these bubbles. Unfortunately it is hard to know in advance if this will happen (though some resins advertise themselves as 'low heat' varieties. The resin I used was a generic brand - brands aimed specifically at model making should be better (and more expensive).

It might have looked more realistic if you'd used a real twig for the tree, and real mud for the mud, or is that cheating?
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd Жыл бұрын
The problem with real mud is it can sometimes go moldy when used in a diorama (when I made this I lived in a very humid country). You're right that real twigs etc can look good, although they often need painting too because otherwise the scale does look a bit out. Nature is such a hard thing to model, that's for sure.
