I thought everything was great what you did and i learned alot but lol I want those rocks used that you dug up and i want it just outside the entrance to give you heat all night. Fire seemed far away from sleeping area.

I teach survival and i woul have built a fire no later than 3 in the afternoon. It vould be small and it would warm me when i rested as well as boiled snow but when the sun was going down it would be established and easy to build up

with the right clothing and 5 lbs of sleep/shelter gear, you can handle 20F without a fire or having to build anything. with a fire and hot stones, you can sleep ok for 2-3 hours at 0F and the same 5 lbs of gear, or you can do the same thing without the fire by gathering alot of dry debris or evergreen boughs to use for insulation.

when it's consistently sub-freezing, you dont need snow nor much debris. What you do is make a layer of debris on a pile of branches, sprinkle it with water, let it freeez, repeat twice and youll have a pretty good "shell" of protection, Cut a hole in this structure and remove the branches form inside of the 5 ft high, 5 ft wide, 9 ft long "quonset hut' shape, Stuff the shelter with dry grasses/mosses, make a door out of branches and debris, also dampened-frozen. Ideally, have a right-angled crawlway entrance and two such doors. Stuff the crawlway with dry debris. With the right clothing and fairly lw gear, such a shelter enables you to handle 0F with ease. if it's even colder, use a couple of siberian fire lays to heat both sides of 4 head sized rocks for half an hour. smother the flames with ashes or dry, loose dirt. Put some coals and charcoal in an ashes pit, so that the fire remains 'alive' for 12+ hours. move the stones into 4 pits in a row under your raised bed. Surround each stone with a 2" thick layer of ashes. Then you'll be warmed for 4-5 hours at a time, 20F degrees or more. You'll have to remove some of your clothing at first. Don it again as the rocks cool off. As they cool off more, remove some of the ashes from the tops of the rocks. Eventually, the ashes will all be off the rocks and it will be time to reheat the stones.

Saw videos of women in what looked like Afghanistan or Bangladesh where a widow and daughters were trying to survive in snowfilled mountains. There were small trees and women had shovels and built small fire but didn't utilize nearby caves and stones as I have seen in survival videos. Could you search out and give advice or video to help them? I fear they will die in cold weather with few resources.

When are all you shelter building guys going to realize that pine branches do very little to protect you from the elements. It looks cool but that about it. If it's survival stuff then you should have more effective equipment on board. Any way love watching you and your dog settle down in the snow.

I'm amazed at this kind of shelter affects the local fauna in such a negative way. Obviously the local environment is extremely harsh for live to exist. If someone wants to test their wits on building a survival shelter ok. But heartfelt common sense says, bring a tent, bag or whatever and make your imprint minimal on the local fauna. This video and others like it seem ego driven and rather silly. If you challenge yourself in such a way to prove worthiness, do it naked. But please, please, please, bring proper gear and don't act like a total idiot going out in the bush lost, forlorn, in dire sstraights,, needing an emergency shelter. Proper prior planning prevents piss poor performance.
