Күн бұрын

A simple loft bed I made for my out out of construction lumber. The corner posts were 2x6 screwed and glued together. For each corner post, one board is is ripped down by 1-1/2" inches so that both sides end up the same width. That piece that is ripped off is later used as the lip to hold the mattress. The guard rail is made from 2x4s and the stretchers that will hold the mattress were 2x10s. Everything is held together with 3/8" carriage bolts. The height depends on how much clearance you want beneath the bed. This one is tall because I wanted 5' of clearance underneath. The width depends on what size of mattress you plan to use. I made the mattress opening 1" wider and longer than the mattress to allow room for the sheets and covers. This whole things can be made with a drill/driver, circular saw, router, sander, and doweling jig.

To all the ppl saying "not simple" Understand the dimensions you need, e.g. mattress lenght/width & measure the person sleeping there when sitting. That'll give you the minimum distance to the ceiling so they won't bump their head when sitting on mattress. Next, try to build something small so you understand the importance of cutting same length & learn stability. Then make sure you pre-drill, very important or you'll possibly split wood. You'll run into mistakes, who doesn't, don't rush it & have fun with it. If you're not sure, you can always add extra bracing like the triangle supports for shelves on the corners.

It's not about understanding. It's just the amount of tools youre using isnt a simple DIY. Its buy a workshop of tools. A router? How many average people have all these tools. This video should be called Building a loft bed.

Great video. Excellent craftsmanship. I watched this video along with your DIY question. To me, this makes sense and you did it yourself, so it's DIY. But some people might need a verbal walk through to explain what you are doing and why. Maybe then they will consider it DIY? But great work none the less

A very clean and minimal looking design in the end but yeah, not so much a simple do it yourself task haha, but there's no way to make a free standing loft bed easily without a lot of structural supports and connections otherwise it would fall apart after a week of crawling into it haha. Thanks man this is helpful, i'm attempting to make a 6 foot high double bed loft so i can have my work desk underneath it :D

How is it not DIY? It's a simple design with no advanced joinery. It's all cheap construction lumber. The only required tools are a drill, circular saw, sander, and a router. The router could even be skipped. It's not a quick build, but simple doesn't mean fast.

@BitsandWood
@BitsandWood 4 жыл бұрын
You could probably make a platform for the existing bed with four posts joined by cross members along the top and bottom, but leaving one side open for access. I guess that would be somewhat similar to what I did here, but without the ladder and with the rails and stiles around the top. Could be a fun project.

assembly seemed simple, the construction was not unless comparing it to pouring a foundation. I could frame the room it went in and finish the drywall before you finished this project. lol. not starting any crap, I am about to embark on a build as well real soon for my youngest... how many hours start to finish? and what was the price tag?
@BitsandWood
@BitsandWood 6 жыл бұрын
+unoefxz That’s why I said different scales. For me the construction of this was very simple. Screws, dowels, and bolts. No fancy joinery. For someone else maybe it isn’t simple. think it was about $230 not including the paint. Build time was around 8 hours. There was more time waiting for paint and glue to dry.

dont get me wrong, I have a full wood shop and am going to build one for my daughter, but it will be simple and use MDF. Instead of doweled together railings, it will have a panel. No doubt your work is impeccable, but the average joe could not pull this off let alone identify a fostner bit. Not knocking it at all except for the title. I loathe dry time!!! especially for paint as i can't get anything else done in my small shop.

Hello mate, I have never work with wood before but I want to build an "L" desk, hopefully I am not totally wrong but I fear I may be, my plan is to buy 1"x6"x10', cut 4 pieces of 6"x5' and glue them togheter to get a 24"x5' rectangle, is it that easy?, or even possible if I don't have equipment ( table saw, clamps, power tools, etc)? Do you thing I would be able to get a flat top on the desk? Will I need to buy a power tool? I'm sure this is a silly question, please bear with me.

Oh, I can take it. I welcome it, in fact. I just don't agree at all in this case. Of course complexity is in the eye of the beholder and will vary depending on one's experience. From my perspective there is nothing difficult about this project. It's all common construction lumber held together with glue and screws and painted for a finish. It doesn't require any special tools or techniques. It doesn't get much more simple than that.

A “simple” loft bed, from my perspective, wouldn’t require all of the different cuts you made. Simple to you may mean something completely different. But I may have missed the point that this wasn’t a diy tutorial. Following what you were doing wasn’t the easiest thing to do.

This video is simple due to the deign and the number of tools that were required to make it. If you don't consider this to be simple, your carpentry levels aren't high enough to be able to safely sleep elevated. I've never seen such a moronic comment section in my entire life.

Nice and simple. But to reduce the length of video, you dont have to fast forward and the whole build process in FF is really pain to watch. Joining, painting one post at normal speed is enough than four at FF.

Of course. There'd be no joy in the process if I didn't enjoy the videos. It isn't about watching myself, but more about seeing the project be built. If people like them or find them useful, that's great; but I make projects that I enjoy and make the videos of those projects that I enjoy. Otherwise there would be no fulfillment in the process. Obviously not everyone is going to like them, but that's okay. There are lots of other people making videos of things they make out there that those people might enjoy.

@@BitsandWood Your projects are great. Personally I appreciate and more learning take place for me, if videos are normal play ( not FF or time lapse) I fully agree, everyone makes and share videos of projects they love to make and record. Thanks for sharing.
