Do not underestimate the will of Mr sulcata. He will dig deep if he want to escape.

That’s why this is a temporary pen for this sulcata while it is small, and it can later become a pen for another species

@@GregsTurtleHaven I was thinking at some point in time I'll dig deep and either fill mine with bricks (most likely) or cement.

It doesnt realy matter if they dig outside since they are still gonna be inside the yard, our russian turtoise always digs a lot between summer and spring and we just let her. That's what they naturally do just let them be and just put them back in

We just got a sulcata and I have been looking up info/videos. Someone mentioned if your sulcata isn't digging don't encourage it by making a burrow, it might only do the opposite and encourage it to start digging. They also noted that because they never encouraged it for their sulcata, they never had a problem with them digging. They had 20 year old sulcata that never dug.

I was thinking the same thing, lol. I live in California and my backyard has clay. I'm making this same enclosure, but it will be harder to make. Especially when I have a bad back! I'll have to take it slow. 🙂

I have a very similar sized pen for one of my sulcatas and it has a little hide like you built but mine dug it himself. However he has stopped using his den, especially at night he just sleeps outside even when it’s like 60 degrees... Any idea why my guy stopped using his den ?

My adult male has one main area he has dug out and likes to sleep in, but periodically likes to excavate other shallow areas and will randomly sleep in those. Perhaps wild sulcatas have huge home ranges and keep multiple burrows?

Hey Greg great video as usual. Question for you... where can I find tortoises that need adopted? I’m in Jacksonville Florida and looking to help someone in need.
@GregsTurtleHaven

There should be plenty in that area in need of adoption. Try local reptile groups, fb groups and you should be able to network into finding some in need, especially if you are willing to travel for pick up within your state

How do you know when a sulcata outgrows his/her pen? They plow down the fence surrounding their pen. My 75 pounder is a living Caterpillar tractor, he’s only contained by a 4’ chain link fence with a concrete foundation that keeps him from digging out.

You shouldn't have a chain link fence. If they can see "out" that's what they're going to do. Use concrete, bricks, thick wood boards with post support, etc. Use nothing that they can see "out into the world".

What state/country are you located in. I would love to do something like this and rescue one but I live in new England
@razzmatazz52726
@razzmatazz52726 Жыл бұрын
New England is way too cold in the winter. You'd have to have a pen inside your garage with heat lamps. You can't have a cold floor either. If the temperature is lower than 45 degrees and they were not warmed up during the day, they'll start to pyramid (their carapace, the top part of their shell) and/or die. When they outgrow that you'll have to build an enclosure where snow is not going to fall on them and have a very large dog house, or shed with heat lamps, heating pads with temperatures at 85 minimum and a cool off area. $$$. Honestly, in your area, I would NOT get a Sulcata. Your environment just doesn't work. This species is from the desert in Africa. If you still want a larger tortoise, but one you can keep inside a tortoise house inside your house, I'd recommend a Russian or a cherry head. Here are the houses: www.amazon.com/Anisum-Wooden-Tortoise-House-Tortoises/dp/B09FK3KMH1/ref=sr_1_56?keywords=tortoise%2Bhouse&qid=1663534851&sr=8-56&th=1 ~ Go to tortoiseforum.org/ for proper information and experts who can answer all your questions. Again, I'm sorry, but unfortunately this species won't work in your area and then you'll more than likely have to give it up which isn't fair to the animal. Sulcatas will live longer that you. They'll get up to 150-200 lbs. They're a serious commitment. Take care.

Hi! I just wrote this to another person who lives in New England. Indiana is fine in the summer, but snow just doesn't work. They're from Africa in the DESERT. If you have a two yo and their carapace is not pyramiding, then you must be doing something right! Good luck! New England (Indiana) is way too cold in the winter. You'd have to have a pen inside your garage with heat lamps. You can't have a cold floor either. If the temperature is lower than 45 degrees and they were not warmed up during the day, they'll start to pyramid (their carapace, the top part of their shell) and/or die. Is it possible a bioactive outdoor tortoise pen?
@GregsTurtleHaven
@GregsTurtleHaven 3 жыл бұрын
once your outdoor setup is established, to a degree they all would be "bioactive". All my enclosures have fungi, worms, isopods and bacteria that break down waste, and resuilt in natural plant growth. it may not l;ook like a killer Serpa Design indoor setup, but once the pen or outdoor enclosure gets established through a couple seasons it naturally occurs
