I've had a lot of requests to try out Webflow, so I decided to record my first time using it to share my thoughts along the way! Please remember to subscribe bit.ly/1aE5UOT
Recently Webflow has really been rising in popularity as a website building tool that makes it easy to bring a website design to life. I really enjoyed trying it out in order to share my first impression of it for you! I'll definitely be using it again. I do feel like it requires some coding knowledge to use easily, and if I had absolutely no knowledge in HTML and CSS I think I would have struggled a little. However, I was able to get the site for my course on getting paid on time created really quickly in Webflow!
Check out the site I built here: charlimarie.com/getpaid
Try Webflow yourself: charlimarie.com/try-webflow
And while you're at it check out ConvertKit: convertkit.com

Its always a good thing to learn to code on your own.. you dont have to rely on a piece of software.. and if you practice long enough, you start to explore new ways to create new techniques or something.. these pieces of software will be helpfull if you know how to code the project.. but want to do it a lil faster!

As a developer, I think it's much easier to code as you have access to more resources such as css frameworks such as Tailwind, and animations such as those provided via Vue.js. Plus the final code is optimized and you can get easy access to image optimization services.

Awesome, glad you got to try it out! Webflow is pretty nifty for sure :) I agree with you on the funky class name stuff. It's a bit odd having to add classes to like links instead of just being able to target the 'a' tags inside a div. That said Im pretty sure they're going to be moving towards a more component based class system, though I'm not sure when that'll happen. Thanks for the shoutout btw ☺️😏
@charlimarieTV

that'd be epic, hope that does happen! Cos it's the one little thing that makes the code feel a bit awkward, since you'd never write it like that if you were coding it by hand. thank YOU for introducing me to webflow in the first place :)
@DrewPalko
@DrewPalko 7 жыл бұрын
you don't have to add a class to edit general a tags, but you would if you wanted one (say inside of a div) to be different from the rest. Webflow gives you access to add styles to general tags like a, h1, p, etc.

Great video, Charli! Loved hearing more about Webflow and how it works as I've never used it myself. It's a really interesting concept of visually packaging code but it seems to work quite well. Hi! Thanks for your thoughtful video! I'm starting to dig WebFlow more and more. One of the biggest things I got from your demonstration was that you could export your finished code to go elsewhere like to your own hosted website. Thought WebFlow was gonna force you to only go with their Hosting Plans (if they have any - haven't been over there yet).

My first impression of this first impression video was FINALLY, a video I wanted to watch where the presenter was so confident in the content that it did not have to be propped up with distracting “music” - but after the introduction, there it was in all it’s loudness and unnecessaryness . As i always say Webflow is good for designers who don't wanna hand code a website... But if i had to give all the designers a suggestion being a developer myself I'd say If you are planing to work with a developer on a project after some time in that case using tools like webflow in the beginning will make the process really slow for an actual coder to maintain it in future (in case you are planing to stick with using webflow while you also want the developer to work on that project)
@charlimarieTV
@charlimarieTV 7 жыл бұрын
+Anant Gulia yeah great point. That's why we don't use something like webflow at work. It's all hand coded cos multiple people have to work on it, and we use Sass.
@guabz___
@guabz___ 7 жыл бұрын
What about use Webflow as a starting point to make the structure of the website, export it and then code everything else from there. What do you think?
@AnantGulia
@AnantGulia 7 жыл бұрын
If you think you can manage that then nothing is wrong with that as long as you are just adding new css classes on the elements to cutomise them further and not touching the classes and css code generated by the Webflow specially for layout again you inherit limitations here if you wanna change the layout later in the process of improving the website its gonna take more time then just editing the code which you coded in the beginning becuase you are the one that coded it you may remember the reasons why you did a spcific thing and for js i don't know how much webflow is using as the base like is it includes jquery etc etc. But again most of the developers have there own starting base which they have created over a period of time by observing what is better for their process how they like to approch while solving a specific problem. For instance i dont like to use jquery and all the plugins it provide its too much work to customise the plugins for a project according to your requirements and its like a bloat ware in my view... I mean there are alot things i can tell you but again i dont make any videos and to write a blog post naah i dont have that much time and my english vocablury is not that good that i can explain you what i know in a few sentences :P Hope this info gives you an Idea... Other than that i hope other people also respond if they know how to simply put this in words....
@guabz___
@guabz___ 7 жыл бұрын
hahahah is cool. thanks for the reply, I think is more about the workflow and tools to make the development process more precise and confortable depending on the person, the team and the project. But yeah, I don't think that you wanna use the generated code to iterate on some different layouts, that's just not right. But you can still create on top of that and clean the unnecessary thing if you want to change the layout in the future. Like I said, the key is the workflow and take all that in mind before develop. Just my opinion.

it's easy... take a empty wordpress theme, create a empty child. take the style.css file and copy its content into the stylesheet.css in the editor theme child of wordpress then inside each page of wordpress copy the html5 code from each webflow page you have. is that simple. You might need to work around the menus ... cause wordpress comes with its own menu, and you can use that ... but other than that is very simple. baby stuff. if you doing only html5 that is all about it... if you do php (wordpress backend stuff) than webflow ain't the way to go. stick to manual coding. if you know how to transfer a html5 website to a wordpress website you know how to code and folder structure needed for a website classes divs etc ... you will find it way faster to manually code things than click click click stuff and is actually even more fun to manually type code than clicking things. There are two types of productivity the one that is dirt cheap... cause well zero knowledge just click click stuff ... and than is the productivity that comes with actually knowing the code. As speed they are both the same. the clicky stuff thing might be faster for designing.. but the moment you go to a backend and you need to find what you did in there ... you will be lost... cause you are using flexbox and other automated (machine) bootstrap alternative that you can't keep track off. My suggestion go manual code and use grid (flex css if you know flex.. i prefer grid is way easier can be learned in 30 minutes) css you won't need bootstrap library dependency no jquery nothing of that kind. just css3 and html .. if you prefer you can go haml and scss + javascript! they are amazing languages you can do anything you want.

I would love to hear about any tools to allow design directly in a responsive staging site. To cut time and improve design/dev time by having a crossover/ more collaborative process where work in progress designs can be shown to clients in staging to allow for quicker turnaround. I don’t know if that makes sense! Maybe this tool is a way to do that as a designer, so I could hand this off and it can be quickly pasted in and tweaked by dev? Would that work you think?

Webflow is a great tool for Web Devs to get more done in a shorter time, and for non-coders there are a great many options, but be warned tools like these are NOT replacements for learning the techology stack. You'll only get so far with pointy-clicky tools before you'll hit a wall. It's all very well having a great looking UI, but what happens when you meed to wire up all those pretty elements to back-end code to make the UI useful? As a back-end dev I prefer Bootstrap Studio as you're never far away from the code.

I was forced to use Muse at uni (it was an elective-of-sorts paper at Massey in my second year, Charli) and I found it to be horrible, it was very fiddly to the extreme where if you adjusted something by 1px it'd move down half the page... think of using Word to create a document you otherwise would in InDesign, just very bad UX, I felt

I wonder if there's a service that allows for sophisticated database design, and the ability to incorporate the information stored in database tables that one creates into the UI. It really seems like that's the next step in the evolution of this industry in general. I know in Wix you can create some data tables now, but it still falls short of bringing the full power of relational databases into one's application.

I've been interested in using Webflow and have only dabbled in it so far. The bit of your vid that caught my attention is how you took what you did in WF and moved it to Wordpress. That is my ultimate goal, but other videos I've seen on exporting the WF code seemed to involve a crazy amount of time and effort to get it to work in WP. You mentioned setting a blank header and footer (that seems almost too easy compared to what I've seen!). Can you elaborate on your process to get WF to WP? Cheers!
@charlimarieTV

yes for sure I can do this! I will say though that perhaps it's so easy because once it's in wordpress you can no longer edit it in webflow. I mean, you can but then you have to reexport the code. So perhaps thats why my way of doing it is so simple!

I plan to pay for the first month and then cancel since I only need it for one project right now. What I am wondering though is in the future when I add future changes or projects to my portfolio, won't I need to pay again to keep that updated code? What do you think is the best way of handling that situation?

Another drag and drop design editor I recommend is Site Designer 3 by Coffee Cup Software (www.coffeecup.com/designer/). it comes with different frameworks like Bootstrap, Foundation and Materialize. I've been using their products for quite some time and like that it's mobile first, clean code, and many other features. If I had to say why I like this tool so much, it's the ease of use. You quickly build your site(s), show the client, make some changes, and launch.

as a semi-professional webdesigner with no clue about code, i ask myself: why using scetch or xd or other prototyping tools, when you can build the site directly in webflow? woudnt that save a lot of time?
@charlimarieTV
@charlimarieTV 6 жыл бұрын
You’re forgetting about the value of rapid iteration though! Yes if you’re already 90% sure you know what design will be best you can start straight in Webflow. But usually a design process of wireframing and iteration is needed to come up with the best solution.

i normally do design-lines and previews in indesign and then give away pdfs to the customers. of course i dont build the site in webflow in the first step. only when its production ready. i dont know scetch but i once used xd and will never again touch this tool, because it lacks of almost everything i need in the design process (for example i cannot connect instances of an image with the original, so every time i have edit the original, i have to reload all pictures again. or that i cannot use style templates for font. well maybe one can, but i coudnt find it). the only thing that makes a bit sense is, that you can link some sites. but i dont want to give away the design-freedom indesign gives me. what i mean is: why should i build a website in a prototyping-tool, link everything and then build all again in webflow. i would rather stay with indesign, design fast and easy and then build everything for real. maybe i am just outdated ;)

Funny enough I have been looking at these so called WYSWYG (what you see is what you get) apps as an alternatives to Muse which bluntly refuses to be responsive on my side. Being a designer - and knowing very limited code - such vids are much appreciated, thanks.

I’d recommend just learning HTML and css aswell, I know you want to avoid coding but it can never be truly avoided. Most drag and drop editors won’t give you 100% clean code so it’s better to just know it to fix it up after

What's the point of sketch when you can just jump straight to wordpress or webflow?
@charlimarieTV
@charlimarieTV 5 жыл бұрын
Because design is more than just picking a color and putting in a heading... it’s a process you go through to decide how the page should look! It’s easier to go through that process of design decision making in a design tool where you can compare options and quickly try things out rather than jump straight into Webflow and build the first thing that comes to mind.
