How I built my Star Wars BB-9E Droid from Star Wars The Last Jedi, which was used in the video last week with Colin Furze and his life-sized Kylo Ren's TIE Silencer. This video is sponsored by eBay. Check out last week's video to see BB-8E in action: • Epic Stars Wars Projec...
This Star Wars BB-9E builds is similar to my BB-8 Build, but was designed to have enough traction to drive on grass. All the parts were purchased on eBay so I used 3D printing for all of the custom cosmetics and mechanics.

Funny to watch how quickly you rocked this project. I remember watching way back when you were building your first BB-8 and all the trial and error as you built the next 2 as well. Cool to see 3D pieces that I saw you design from scratch show up without a thought in this build. Your ball droids have come a long way since some ball bearings inside and empty shell and the head doing the driving, haha. Congrats.

I remember discovering this channel back when he made BB-8 V1 and I was thinking "man that's kind of a primitive design, but impressive how he manages the head to stabilize while also driving". Then came Version 2 and 3 and I was blown away and since became a fan and subscriber

there are TWO main types of drive systems, the direct drive like on this droid where it is physically attached to the inner wall of the sphere, and there is the "Hamster Ball" type drive, where the drive itself is free rolling inside, each type has it's positives & negatives... : +more torque, +more stable drive over irregular surfaces, +vertical axis head control, not just horizontal rotation / -more complicated programming, -heavier, -more costly, -more complicated, -less operational time between charges * : +less complicated programming, +less costly, +less complicated, +lighter, +more operational time between charges, / -less stable over irregular surfaces, -less torque, -only horizontal spin for head * Direct Drive systems are better for more experienced and better access to funding Hamster Ball drives are better for first time and/or inexperienced in electronics and those who are not well funded

That droid looks amazing! I would love to see you do something crazy like outfitting a BB type droid with something like a kinect to build a map of the world around it, so that it can then autonomously navigate within a "known" volume of space. An omnidirectional camera could be fun too. Then it could do things like record 360 degree video when you take it to exhibitions. :D

I'd like to know if this is what a person needs to say to pass legal muster for putting a 3D model of a droid or other movie prop on the web. I've had models asked to be taken down and know people who have had models taken down, yet similar models are allowed to stay forever. I'm really trying to figure out how to share my art without crossing any legal lines. If "inspired by" is the magic word, I would love to know.

I did put in a request on the first video for an itemized parts list (with specifics) as well as the files used for the printed parts, I'm no engineer, nor do I have the money to buy the right equipment, so I'll end up having to go to a shop every other week and make one or two pieces on pay day, for that I need the info he used to make that stuff, I'm still hoping to hear, but I'm not seeing much evidence he responds to his fans or requests :(

Fantastic job, James! You 'upgraded' your rebuild of BB-8 by offsetting the tracking--to make it appear that it could roll in any direction (and not always across the same four circular panels). Did you not do this this time due to time constraints? Incredible design! I wondered if it is feasible to make a build with no set tracking (actually rolls in all directions).
