Thanks! Funny you should mention it....I've had this idea to make a white concrete iceberg extending through a table, but had never sorted out how to create the organically shaped opening.... so I was taking notes while watching this! :)

@@modustrial Oddly enough while I was watching this video I was thinking you could really change the sandstone rock for some GFRC. The end product definitely looks amazing - I thought it had a Japanese feel to it. I have lift similar sized sandstone sculptures and they were back breakers.

While obviously more than a piece of furniture, this is honestly the most beautiful and interesting bench I have ever seen. To call this a bench actually seems, just kinda not right. I only now wish you would apply such skill and technique to making stands for world class bonsai. Absolutely excellent work. Thank you.

Hi Brian, amazing bench! I wanted to share a technique I've used before on a similar project that will get you to the final fitting point with the stone MUCH quicker. Take a length of thick solder (the kind used for soldering copper pipes) and wrap tightly to the contour of the stone at the point you want even with the top of the table. You can then carefully remove it and transfer the contour to the top of the bench. Of course, it's not going to be perfect and you'll want to start cutting a bit within the line, but it will get you pretty close without too much trial and error.

You are tenacious, Brian! I just spent a couple of days, on my knees, fitting 1/4" plywood strips to a very un-level slate floor, which was all over the place, so fitting your rock top to a thick piece of hardwood is monumental!! Not being very good at sharpening chisels, of course, I'd have ripped those cantilevered wood strips in 3 pieces, mitered the angles on the center piece to fit the arch, then glued the outside edges back on, but as I said: You're tenacious! Great job, and I'm now a subscriber!

First off, ausome project, and you're giving me a lot of Ideas. Here's how I'd have made the hole in that top. Scan the stone with my 3d scanner to rully render the stone up in Fusion 3D. Measuring the height I want the table, I'd then mark that height on the model, then measure down the thickness of the board and mark that. I'd then slice the model off at those marks and use it to make a void in the board model. I'd then Export that model to my CNC router and mill out the void in the board. Its prety much as simple as that. But I'm also a technofile.

I'm glad I stumbled on this video - I've been feeling a bit uninspired lately in my woodworking and seeing this beautiful bench you made breathed some fresh inspiration into me. The way the arch and leg draw the eye balances the visual weight of the stone for me, and the surface of the stone looks almost like bark in the images of the final piece. And the taper of the leg, together with the movement of the arch, makes that side of the bench look just as anchored as the stone. That's my take on it anyway. Very nice bench regardless!

I love this piece! Has a simple look to it, despite the complexity of making it. Just beautiful. Might be cheating, but if I ever attempt anything like this, I think I'll cut the top of the stone off, then trace the top stone on the top of the table, the bottom stone onto the bottom of the table, and router out just a little of each area, couple millimeters maybe, so that the rock appears to be going through the whole piece when in fact it does not. The table just sits firm on the bottom rock then, making it pretty stable without other brackets. As you can see, I'm really inspired and my brain is running with it. 😃👍 Oh, and doing it this way, the top piece of stone could be hollowed out for a secret compartment! Thanks for sharing!

Very nice. You may want to try this neat trick next time you are grinding or cutting stone. Of course Using a grounded grinder, attach a portable GFI extension cord to the grinder. You can then attach a small plastic hose to the grinder with a valve to adjust water flow. Using water eliminates the dust and the dangers of silicosis. I will probably be flamed for suggesting this but I have a friend who is a professional stone sculptor and uses this method every day with nary a problem.
