Building a trail through a bog with a mini hoe.

This is the second part of building our last trail. Once again under the powerlines we find mud, lots of mud. We started on this trail last fall and stopped work on it due to soft in Sutu materials. Now that the summer is drying things out, we are back at it again. Enjoy!

Barry, the good news is you will always be working on those trails, and that’s a good thing. Keep up the good work.

Right you are Robin. Mother Nature is constantly trying to take back what we have cleared. Blackberry vines grow about 2’ a day and there are lots of other plants that insist on closing in the trails. I have created monster!

We always kept an old chain around for cutting large stump roots. Shovel a clear path just big enough to cut in. With your excavator as the ground semi dries should be doable. All you have to hand shovel is the underneath.

Douglas Good plan on the roots. The mats on our property may have to wait a while before I get enough courage to attempt that cut. Barry

Can you dig down as it dries around those large matts and using your chainsaw cut them into manageable sections for use? As ten footers you should be able to salvage them while it is dry. They will be handy working in the muck.

Douglas a piece of a big mat sure would come in handy! Sure would be a monster to cut through that mud, dirt, gravel impregnated 12” thick wet oak. I will put that on my list of things to investigate. One of the mats is actually not very rotten and might be a candidate.
