In Episode 6 of building a TT:120 model railway, the layout takes a huge step forward as I start work on the scenics! While I could simply repeat the same methods and techniques I've used in the past on my 00 gauge layouts, I'm not sure that would produce the best results in a smaller scale like TT:120. So I'm going to be trying out some brand new techniques and methods that I've never shown on the channel before and hopefully these will be of interest to everyone, regardless of what scale you're working in.
Of course there's some familiar escapades like building the landscape, using plaster bandage and even a small rock face which I know a lot of people like. As soon as you get some scenery on the layout though, it really does start to come alive and I can't wait to show you what I've been working on!

This layout has been coming together very nicely so far, I can’t wait to see what comes next!

Thanks! Lot's more exciting stuff to come including the expansion of the scene created today and some more urban style scenics at the opposite end of the layout... It's gonna be a challenge to get it all done in time for the exhibition! Thanks for watching 😃

Well done on getting Rails to sponsor. It’s coming together nicely.

It's definitely a big milestone to have them showing their support for the channel and as always I'd much rather promote model railway related businesses rather than take any old sponsor money! Thanks for watching 😃

Although TT is not a scale for me, it’s great to see the progress of the build. It was also great to meet you at the Bluebell last weekend.

Absolutely, regardless of the scale there are still plenty of tips and tricks to pick up. Hope you had a great day at Bluebell... it was great to meet so many people at the show! Thanks for watching 😃

Very convincing, That Model Railway Guy, especially with trains running. Looking forward to those big changes you mentioned.

It does look good doesn't it! This is always the stage where things start to progress quite quickly and the layout starts looking considerably different... the Channel Members have had a taste of the progress already 😉 Thanks for watching 👍

I'm really interested to see this layout progress, for me looking at the track plan with that nice big terminus station, steep inclines, multiple levels of track in a close proximity, the goods yard it all strikes me as quite an city or built up town scape. Something akin to everard junction build but maybe more on the out skirts. So I'm definitely curious to see how you incorporate the rural country to a very busy layout
@ThatModelRailwayGuy

The plan is to have the left hand side of the layout be more urban with the right hand side featured today being more open countryside. The dividing line so to speak will be the cut through of the reverse loop be we have some plans to blend to two different scenes together. Thanks for watching 😃

Yeah, while I could have just used static grass again part of what makes this fun is trying out new things to suit each scale and the setting of each layout. Thanks for watching 😃

Interesting scenery techniques. Truth be told I almost exclusively model in O scale but I've been enjoying this series to learn new ways of laying track, ballast, and landscaping. I'm already planning on trying your double-sided tape trick on my layout and I might just try that grass too.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy 4 күн бұрын
Yeah regardless of scale there's always a lot of tip and tricks we can pickup. I see no reason why the double sided tape wouldn't work for O gauge... with static grass you may want to use 2-6mm fibres to account for the scale. Thanks for watching 😃

I think this technique is the best way. I have only been able to do the technique without static grass. Eventually I will get/make an applicator and do this where you mix both methods! Fantastic work as is usual!
@ThatModelRailwayGuy

It does show that static grass isn't the only way to go about adding scenics to a layout. Flock and scatter can work just as well and in some cases is even more desirable in smaller scales where static grass can look oversized. Thanks for watching 😃

The route runs through a beautiful landscape. Just as a note, it is actually the same stuff as in hospitals. For example, the plaster bandage from the model making company Faller, if you open the brown packaging, you will find the bandage still packed in the hygienic protective packaging from the original Medic company 😅. But they still charge 10 times more for the outer packaging than the original medic product cost🤑. I personally only use the plaster bandage from the pharmacy, it is much cheaper.

Yes I'm pretty sure the stuff I use currently is the same even though it's branded as a craft material for kids... luckily it doesn't cost any extra and it's always better to buy in bulk as you always need more than you think in my experience! Thanks for watching 😃

Great job on the rocks. have you thought of putting a spot of black paint in the plaster when you mix it. It will hide ant chips the rocks get.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy 4 күн бұрын
This isn't a particularly good idea as you need the rocks to be white for the painting technique I demonstrated to work. Otherwise you'll get a flat consistent colouring that looks really unnatural. I've never experienced the rocks chipping on any of the layouts I've built (which are all portable) so I don't know why people seem to think it's a common occurrence. Thanks for watching 😃

Looking great. Nice to see you trying different techniques. I was wondering how you would scale down your static grass technique. Looks good, however I’m not sure (from how it looked on camera) that the 1mm added much to the effect! Thank you for making the stone walls available in TT… I’ve added them to my shopping list 😊
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy 4 күн бұрын
The 1mm acts more as a base to create a more consistent coverage and gives the 2mm fibres a bit of extra height. It's a subtle effect but without it the grass can look a bit patchy. Thanks for watching 😃

Are the foam walls going to be available in T-gauge?
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy 2 сағат бұрын
T Gauge as in 1:450? No, they would be too small to make consistently. Currently the only plans are to release them in TT and N alongside the existing 00 range. Thanks for watching 👍

@@ThatModelRailwayGuy Thanks for the response, and so quickly. I guess I'll just have to do it myself. I do have some 1/24th rough stone walls, so I guess I'll 3D scan them, and then rescale to 1/450. Then decide on PLA or resin, since I do have both 3D printers. Thanks again. By the way, I always use Isopon, the filler, for my landscaping. In T the Mod Roc dimples are MASSIVE. And Isopon can be sculpted with the clay modelling tools.

I would love to buy the dry stone walls but your website discriminates against Kiwis 😊. Is there anyway you can ship to New Zealand please

Obviously we have nothing against New Zealand (or any other country) but international shipping isn't something I'm able to offer at this point as mostly a one man band operation. Thanks for your understanding 👍

Dry stone walling in N?? Thank you!! The rigid products are just awful and whilst a smaller scale means less detail - being able to actually do decent curved walls is all I wanted as a modeller. Thank you!

I'm glad you're excited for it! We've had a lot of requests to do it in N Gauge too so we listened and have been quietly working on it in the background. Hopefully it's not too far away from release now. Thanks for watching 😃
