I built a hay feeder for the goat stall in our barn. Now the goat stall is complete and my wife can purchase the goats she wants.

A way to keep the feeders from being soiled by the goats is to keep it a bit high, but then add a step for their front feet. Then their butt can’t get that high but their head can.

I tried pigs, but they absolutely destroyed the land, rooting up a ton of rocks and making it so nothing could grow. That's the last time I did pigs. :) Love the feeder!

We had cattle and easy to take care of. We had black baldies which are Angus/Hereford crosses. We got a Hereford bull which was an error for the first time heifers---calves were born too large but we didnt lose any. Angus bull would have been a better choice. Had hogs and they nearly ate us out of house n home 1 boar, 4 sows and 40 pigs. Two or three for the freezer used up our excess milk. They need grain/feed and we had a lot of milk from our Jersey cow. I am not fond of goats, takes a lot of fencing and they still get out---eating roses, fruit trees and just about everything in the gardens. My friend has Angora goats and sheep for fiber production and she seems to do a lot of vet work on them every month. If I had the land/pasture now, I would get cattle for sure!!! Great build!! I have to repair the sideboard on my yard trailer next. I have two gardens cleaned and tilled and planting, 1 more garden to clean. Toms need transplanted, peas planted before it rains this evening! Trying to get the both places cleaned as the snakes are coming out! UGH

Another very good project video. Thank you for the video and are looking forward to seeing the goats in your barn.! Our family friends in PA raise two pugs and two cows for food for three families. Easily maintained without too much work as there are always others projects going on. HA

as one who has been doing pigs ans steers they take next to no fencing at all, just run one wire eletric though the bush 12" off the grouund and as they get bigger lift it up to 16" the pigss will never cross it even if the power go out, same with picking up bull calves for next to nothing, and a lot for free from dariy farm, most are cross bread with abeef of some kind, again a one wire electric is all i have ever used 3 feet off the ground, and lift it to 4 feet as they get bigger, at 18 months old you have great beef for the freezer, be sure to grain finish there last 90 day, for the best meat, check me out to see how little i use. if you go with goats, you best havea very large fencing fund, as they need a large area in the woods, and they will get out of any fence that is less then 8 feet high.. and on the roof of your home, on your cars,, oh i can remember to well

A suggestion...you need another mineral feeder for diatomaceous earth, baking soda, kale, and a vitamin/mineral combo. Your wife can also get mini-nubian, they would give more milk. the hay feeder might be too high, google key-hole feeders for goats, less feed lose. I love watching you build things, are you a professional carpenter? I'm glad I found this channel. diatomaceous earth is a natural wormer. Also use it for chickens in feed and for a dust bath in a hallow box.

Nice job. We just built two hay feeders for two pregnant Angus cows in their birthing stalls. Of course, the stalls are larger and higher. We're about to raise some pigs. Haven't determined what kind of pigs yet. The pigs will live off the land with a bit of scraps and garden veggies not fit for consumption. After 6 months (250 to 300-ish lbs) pigs are gonna be in the freezer. You'll like the Nubian goats; they're fun. They jump and love to climb up on things so watch your feeder. Sheep, goats, cows are all I can think you might want to free-graze on your land. Recommend to start small, then work your way up. More animals requires more work, more room, more waste, and bucks. So a small step at a time. Enjoyed a full-watch of your video.

Houndsman One Nubians are pretty big, did you mean Nigerian dwarf? Myotonics are meat goats and dont jump. Boers can be lazyand dont want to breed. Pygmys have springs for legs, and will jump 5 feet from a standing start. We had Boer/Kiko mix, with Myotonics thrown in. I didnt milk, so that was the best combo for us.

I was going to suggest hair sheep, and then you said it yourself, so I guess that is a pretty good idea, of course I would eat lamb/sheep at Mc Donalds, if they had it. Keep up the fantastic work.

Grow a couple small calves, raised at a young age they will be almost like pets. That would be my choice!!! Pigs are good also buy only a couple at a time!! Good luck!!!

If you have brush, goats are your answer. Nubian goats are a great dual purpose for meat and dairy. We have 4 girls, they can produce a gallon a day each peak season, sell the does and raise the boys for meat from feb-march till the fall. Get around 40lbs each buck which is cheap meat and weed cleanup crew. Left over milk goes to the pigs. Cheers

If you went for a smaller-breed dual-purpose or meat cow, like a Dexter or Highland, they would do very well on pasture and hay and not be too intimidating. Or get a grass-fed Jersey house cow and breed her to a meat breed like an Angus to produce super milk and saleable (or eatable) calves.

A good thought for production animals in a smaller pasture - emu or ostrich. Great meat and can eat/sell the eggs too.

Can't Imagine a farm without pigs and a milk cow. A pig will provide you with all the protein you need all year round. Bacon, ham, sausages.... Pigs are a necessity in a farm specially those located in places with long harsh winters.

We have tried it all as for as animals go there are really only to cattle and hogs. Don't be intemitated by calves. Milk goats will make you money but there's not a big market. Dollar for dollar calves are the best.

I just use 5 gallon pales for watering goats if you only getting a few one pale will be good. Last year I had 5 Billy’s I raised up to be sold for meat and this year I’m getting about 40-50 so I’m upgrading to some bigger water troughs.

I think goats or sheep are a good choice for meat. That way your entire meat interest isn't all in one animal. If you also get a breed (of goats or sheep) that is good for fiber, you can market the fiber, but it does take some extra time, attention and money to offer a quality fiber product. Pastured meat chickens or rabbits might also be a good choice. Note: This all just my opinion, based on research and watching a lot of homesteaders. My place isn't ready for animals yet either and I have no experience. I'm right about where you are, fixing up a new property with old buildings. :) I do know a bit about fiber. I haven't raised any, yet, but I'm a fiber artist and I know what kind of product I want to buy.

Look into Kiko meat goats. We are getting ours very soon. The market just keeps getting stronger for goat meat in the U.S.

I have to disagree, a couple of steers are much easier to handle than goats.where I grew up we had a pasture right close to the house, the steers could literally put there heads in the window if you opend it, they were so mellow, us kids cut through the field all the time, walked right in between them they really didn't care. Cows with calf's can be a problem or bulls. Steers are easy 😋. Goats like to go hunting for bigger and better things like the neighbors new car to bounce on or eat their flowers 😂😂😂
