Over the last couple of weeks I have been working in the shed to increase our ability to preserve the food we grow. A wood-fired dehydrator will give us true off-grid food preservation ability.

You could add a small 4"exaust fan 2600 rpm to maintain the temperature on the top tray with a fan regulator. The fan should be mounted on the top of the container i made one and i use it to dry ginger and garlic .I use coconut shell charcoal no smoke.

Interesting project. I look forward to your first test run :) I just bought a dehydrator because I'm lazy like that. I pop the fruit in and let it do its thing :)

Same. wandering if the heat distributes or if you have to shuffle it around.

Nice work mate, I don't know if it would help but you can get small fans they use on hydro lights about 100mm square, you could put it in the bottom side to push to air around to help make it more consistent. 👌

Definite fans help with dehydrating unless you more looking for the smoker texter.

Excellent idea. Where did you source your conversion kit from? I don't know if they would operate at those temps, but would those fans, I think they're called thermo fans, work to push the air around inside? They require no electricity and only go with heat generated from below them. Maybe one or even two on the bottom of the dehydrator for better more even air circulation? Probably won't work, but just a thought for other alternatives for air movement. Have a great day, from NSW 🦘🙏👍

I also built my own dehydrator but work with much lower temperatures seeing as I built it to make biltong with. Thanks for another informative video.

also speaking of store stuff have you ever tried a chest freezer with a temperature controller to keep it above freezing. then fill it with apples works amazing i have a video on how to do it. if you really want them to last a long time throw a hand warmer in and close that will suck up most of the oxygen and then they will really last.

Being reliant on solar power limits this type of thing.

@@homesteading i think you would be surprised running a chest freezer at fridge temps use almost no power very very little.

very cool. i’m no export but my understanding was you really want more high air flow vs just warm temperatures. should you not have fan on top sucking the air up the top.

Have a couple of fan options that could work - but will trial it first without a fan

hi, was your old solar dehydrator successful? where did you get the plans for that?, thanks

No, it didn't work well, maybe because of design...but I think more because of our climate here in Tasmania. It was a mix of several common ideas you will find in homesteading books and on KZfaq.

Great video. What did you use for insulation please John?

It was an made from part of an old aircon system which came with a thin and dense 1" blanket insulation - so I used that and covered it with timber.
