A diamond raft for canoe sailing with an A frame. Plus a few other ideas. The diamond raft and A-frame works well in lesser winds and smaller lakes. When it gets big I prefer to separate the canoes and use either a single bit of timber across the carrying thwarts or two pieces across at front and back.

Really useful video. That's a lot of information and clearly shown and explained. Nice at the end to get a sense of how different rigs sail. Great to see Pacman being useful in the real world. Thanks Ray. 👍

So enjoyed your teaching us, and loved the knots lesson! Have been hoping to see lines used to lash a rig together, and here we are. Twins and I will watch again until we've got them down. Felt like I'd fallen in with Commander Walker and family of Swallos and Amazons fame. Thank you very much, and big hello from Lexington, Kentucky USA, home of Thoroughbreds, but yes, we have a bit of water, too.

I've been found out! Yep there is just a little bit of Swallow and Amazons about such a rig. I loved those books as a child. So yet a little bit of rope/string and have a good play learning those knots. Your post has made my morning.

My setting poles will slide into the handle on the deck plate of an Old Town Tripper tension of the sail holds it in place. I like the tennis ball idea for the other end.

Hi again. Have you tried it like that? In my head I am thinking that with a pole angled to make an A frame that would be awkward. Cheers

Ray Goodwin the sail is square..think Viking ship. I tried to attach a photo, but couldn't.

Nice rigging, we use similar set up with gin poles and shear legs in some of our timber frame raisings. Curious what foot wear and pants you all are wearing? Dry suits? can you imagine wood smoke in a can, yup not happening only one way to get it. Newtons Law, same for rain coats, if you want it to rain don't bring a rain coat.
@RayGoodwinCanoe
@RayGoodwinCanoe 4 жыл бұрын
All in drysuits. Because we all have them it is very easy just to stick them on for such a day.

Launched at Llangower at the car park and then paddled to windward to the top of the bay. We got the towing and assists video on the way up there. So one day two videos.

it seems very complex, is their a x distance that it becomes worth it,? for you.
@RayGoodwinCanoe
@RayGoodwinCanoe 4 жыл бұрын
First off it does seem complex but if I was doing it with one other that understands the system I can get it done it ten to twelve minutes. So as long as I am going for around a mile plus it has a real benefit. I also do it with groups as it is a lot of fun.

Ray, I watched your video several times and deployed the two boat rigg on Loch Lomond last year with great effect. The swell did get a little tasty near the end of the Loch. My question today is the three boat rigg you show at the end of the video shows the middle boat at the rear. Doesn't this mean you catch a lot of up splash between the three boats? Would it not be more dynamic to have the middle boat at the front? What's the reasoning for having it at the rear. Video from last year facebook.com/278934735640158/videos/960370797794046

I like the video. Good stuff. If I know it is going to get 'tasty' then I will do my best to do separation, as you did, with wood brace across the canoes, keeping a gap between. Re pod racer with single canoe at rear. Not had a problem with this on splashing up that is any greater than the other methods but the wooden brace I think is better. Thank you for your comments and it has got me back to thinking about these formations.
