We are Jim and Jessica, a husband and wife team who decided to make the leap from living the city life to an off-grid homestead. We have no training in carpentry or electrical work. We've come armed only with two Permaculture Design Certificates and a whole lot of determination.
Join us on our journey to move beyond a sustainable lifestyle into a regenerative one. We chose to live in the desert because we love the location and we wanted the challenge of bringing this desert landscape into productive abundance.

I admire your demonstration of hard physical labor, pick, shovel and wheelborrow. I'm two years into my homestead in the panhandle of Idaho. In other words we have four full seasons. We never planned or considered when we started...but six months into it we realized that we could not accomplish all that was required to get underroof and build all necessary with manual labor only. Buying a compact tractor was the right answer and we now know that we could not get everything done without. A 35 HP Kioti tractor at zero percent interest has been a critical force multiplier for our never ending list of projects. We are debt free otherwise. Think about it. If you watch other homestead youtubers almost all end up getting some kind of tractor.

I’m always inspired by you two! Your work ethic is 100% go get-em! I’m building an earthbag home in N. TX. Just a tip- you can water the bags after setting them, the water permeates the bags. Let sit a little bit, then tamp. A light misting with garden hose or canister sprayer works, not soaking them.

Just a thought Cruze let me know😃 he’d love a runner from the trailer out to somewhere. I’ve used cable (I think your part of the world calls it airplane cable) pinned on both ends with star pickets (T posts) and shackled about 1.5m of chain that attaches to their collars. He’d then be free to move only between the two posts. It’ll need a couple stops before each end so he doesn’t get tangled around the end posts 🍺🍺

When you are filling the wheelbarrow, try to position the wheelbarrow so that you are not turning. You will protect your back and cut the time to fill the barrow. I am concerned about your lungs. That dust can be nasty. Wear masks. I damaged 1/2 my left lung in the 70s. The older I get the more I feel it. Be careful. Do you recycle your gray water? Imagin all the work you are doing and using maybe 1200 of your 2000 daily calories. Now selct your daily work fuel from $.45 to upwards of $3.00 Nutrition if you are interested Takes yureself a dip into the MacDs- it takes 3 double qtr pounders w/ cheese to get >2310 calories and will be $4.79 ea or $14.37 & $1.30 TAX w/o transportation! Crazy talkin $$ 13.56 per day per 2000 calories; 10 x more than milk. Remember Work is possible by FAT not protein carbs can become calories too. Unlike Jeese on Pure Living For life you are not packing on weight. Diet is very impoirtant if you want to use your homestead longer and doctor free. So take a snack of white rice and butter (while working like you) & put the $210 a month savings (half) in the mkt.
