BRP is my go-to system for most every setting and I've no problem with the opposed rolls, whether it's by comparing degree of success or using the Resistance Table. I do wish Chaosium were planning a second edition of the Big Gold Book, however.

Glad to hear you've never had an issue with opposed rolls.

@@ChaosiumInc I second Anthony's wish, a gold book second would be great. Especially with some emphasis for the various genres like scifi, with space travel, vehicles, mechs, etc.. Some modular powers/magic/psi system would be great as well. 😍

Love these insightful short interviews. 👍😀 On the opposed role, no major issue with them myself, nor do I have an issue with the Resistance Table which some folks don't like. I'd also add my voice to those wishing for a 2nd edition of the Big Gold Book. Cleaned up, better written and expanded upon would be awesome.

Thanks for watching! Perhaps Jason will have more news on a Big Gold Book next interview. :) We'll see!

I love BRP. It is my favorite system. With that said, we are adapting the 7e CoC rules to our fantasy game for the exact reason Jason mentioned: we like the levels of success in opposed rolls. I would be happy to adapt the Magic World rules to 7e if you guys will give me free stuff (like tee-shirts). :)

Some excellent thoughts, here. I am looking forward to the new edition of BRP finally being released as a hardcover (October?). And hopefully once that's out, Jason and co. look to re-release Magic World under a new name, maybe with some Melnibonean flavor (minus the name, of course)? 🍻⚔🔮

The main BRP tweak I've used for years is not using the crits/fumbles system as is and simply using doubles under skill as crits, and over skill as fumbles (dumping specials entirely), makes things much slicker to my mind. Also I reduce the number of skills right down in all my settings, one melee skill, one ranged skill, one awareness skill, one athletics skill, etc.

I dunno what he's talking about, we always look at degrees of success. My players just look at the numbers already written on their sheet and they call out the degree. Some things will require hard success, or maybe it requires normal but I give them a better result for hard success. So I dunno what he means when he says opposed rolls are different... they're the same as everything else. We already have things that require a degree of success, we're just setting the required degree based on the opposition. It's actually really easy and fast to have the player call out "Normal" and I know they hit because the NPC's fight back roll also came back Normal, with no additional thought required. That's my favorite way of handling opposed effort in ttrpgs...

Hi! I have the second edition of Basic Roleplaying System. I’ve used it to make multiple characters, but I have not played with it.

Best solution I can think of to an opposed roll is for each skill to have an opposition number, which is essentially the skill level's average margin of success which you would subtract from whoever is rolling against you, but like he says, it's more tedious math. I'd just leave it as is, opposes rolls work fine, and feel more dramatic

Is there any way you can show a sample of play? Even a few episode game would be good, especially with youtube acting as a way to spread the word.

IMO, rpgs should require some thinking and effort. Game mechanics are part of that.
