Hi! Thanks for visiting the channel!
In this video i am building the Italeri 1/35 Vosper Motor Torpedo Boat 77 with the related figure set from Italeri as well.
The kit makes a good display once finished, but I wanted to challenge myself and try if i can make a large ship model, but without using my airbrush.
You can decide for yourself in the end if it worked out, but i wanted to show people that you don't need an airbrush for 1/35 ship models - it can be done only using paint brushes, oil and acrylic paints as well. Maybe not in the same quality, but it makes for a nice boat.

With enough practice you can achieve results as good as airbrushed, but i'm a little out of exercise with paint brushes so its a challenge :) Thanks for the compliments!

Luckily the brush painting helped the battered look! if it was in 1/350 scale, it would not have been a good way! But its good to know if you don't have an airbrush, you can still try those subjects

British Torpedoes were plain steel but well greased. In some pictures this grease is a dirty brown and might even have been copper grease to stop rust at sea and to help lube the thing in the tube. That is probably where the instructions got the idea it should be a copper coloured body but an oily or greasy unpainted steel is correct for the body. I should say though the propellers of both British and German torpedoes were almost always brass. Though I would reply since you asked in the video. great job by the way.

Mr, you can use spray can from tamiya for coloring the boat, they have Hull red and grey color for mostly Japan warship and wide range of color for the other ships.spray can will be a little bit expensive but it is good for one who hasn't a pump and spray gun.

G'day Fun, I've been modelling since I was about 10 but had to give it a break when I was in the RAAF. I've been modelling ever since I got out and now, I'm 67. I only purchased my first airbrush and compressor last year. I always used brushes and I prefer large models. I hope you will take some well-intended, friendly advice, as you said you've only been modelling for a few years. It's always a good idea to read the instructions TWICE and make notes or use a highlighter for the decisions you want to make on your model on the instruction sheet. It helps you not to forget things like that decal behind the PE on the control panel. You're pretty good with brushes and I think if you enjoy that you should continue. Brush painting can hide a multitude of mistakes and there's never any overspray. I basically use my little compressor to lay down primer coats that make the paint applied with brushes appear to have greater depth. Dry brushing is also another effect you can't really do with an airbrush. I do mostly WW2 and Cold War aircraft but I don't go heavy with dark panel line undercoating. During my time in the RAAF I was mostly around our two C-130 squadrons and even though they were over 20 years old when I first worked with them, the bare metal sections didn't really have all that much variance in the panels. Of course, we kept our Hercs immaculate, inside and out, no matter how busy they were with operational sorties. I’ve modelled our Hercs, as they were before and after they went into full camo and then the all-grey liveries. No matter what paint scheme I used I never had to weather them heavily, apart from the engine exhaust marks and door handles and fuel filler caps, etc. Of course, those were tips for aircraft builds but much of that kind of thinking can be applied to ships and even armour. Armour is expected to be dirty around the tracks and you can go to town on those but, as with any model, one just has to give a bit of thought about what items, on the model, would realistically get the most 'hands-on' wear. Like the tools on a tank or the steps (or ladders) up on to an aircraft. Similarly, with the doorways, hatches and ladders, anchor chains on ships etc. I reckon you've got a good knack with hand brushes and you should pursue that talent and use your airbrushes where they can be used to apply unique effects one can't get with a hand brush, or to save time on large, repetitive paint jobs, like primers etc. I only use PE if I reckon adding it to a model will really enhance the overall look. Some PE is ridiculously tiny and don't do a lot for the finished effect so, sometimes, I leave some out. A really good bloke to follow on KZfaq is 'Harry Houdini's Models'. He's got some brilliant techniques and he likes to encourage people to approach their model builds from different perspectives. He's heavily into ships but he's very good at all kinds of builds. Well worth a look. Cheers, and all the best, 'Fun', Bill H. P.S. I think the different colours on the torpedos is just a difference between torpedo marks. As to the crew. I don't think the sailor tending to the torpedo would stand outboard of the torpedo; too much chance of him going in the drink! Also, I don't think the Skipper, the bloke in the big coat, would have any reason to be up on the bow. His spot would always be at the control station. Just my opinions of my brief contacts with the RAN. Also, on the torpedoes, and any other pics of old WW2 details; it's best to look out for coloured pics but keep in mind that during the war most photography was in B&W and some pics were coloured by hand later then published in books and magazines. On the other hand, during WW2, nearly 90 percent of the film stock used in war zones was actually colour; it was cheaper back then. Newsreel footage from the services used to have to be converted to B&W so it could be shown in Newsreel Theatres, which is the only place people could get their war news before TV and in addition to the radio. Cheers, again! Bill

My hat is off to you sir for having the guts to do this! I think it turned out good. the hand brushed patina gives it a weathered look.You have to think outside the box and experiment instead of going with what everyone else does. Maybe you will come up with a Technic that sets you apart from everyone. The heck with the naysayers. Keep pushing the envelope i say.

Thanks very much! I'm glad you like it! I like the look as well, on this 1/35 boat - but i dont think i will dry brush painting on bigger ships as the brush strokes could then lead to ugly finishes - it was a good experiment, though! and a good reminder how much harder modelling must have been decades ago when airbrushes werent around or too expensive

Peter again excellent build. Those boats took a beating in the North Atlantic and the crews painted them when they could and used what was available. I especially liked the rust on the topside on the boat. What really set this build off was the crew. I could tell you put some timee in that part of the build. HI just come across this and this model is next on my build list. You did a great job. I did the Schnell boat 100 and only used brushes and I think the effect on what were poorly maintained hard working ships looked much better than an airbrush which I never use. I always buy the Tamiya spray cans and use that a lot less hassle. Painting by hand I think almost does half the tired look of the ship for you as they were not perfect and the model should reflect that. Really good well done.

G'day Fun, I'm sorry, mate! When I made my comments before and offered you advice; that was before I saw videos of your other builds. Boy, do I feel stupid. You are the one who should be giving me tips and instructions on how to build ships properly. I had no idea you'd tackled such big builds. I like big kits too but I'm nowhere near as good at big ships as you are. It's hard to believe you have only been modelling for a few years, or maybe I read the wrong comment by mistake. You are the master of big ship builds. I'll be coming to you for advice when I get around to doing my 1/350 BB-63 ! I hope you forgive my stupidity... ha ha... Cheers, Bill

“Helmsman” is the term you were looking for. Nice build! One thing you may try is spraying just a hint of light grey, or off white, to simulate salt build-up from ocean spray, or oxidation of the paint. Not sure how best to do that, so maybe try it on some scrap material first?

Ah yes, thanks for reminding, helmsman! Thank you, i am glad you like it! salt buildup would have been very cool indeed! I have used white oil paints for it on some smaller scale models, but in this size it might be hard to get the texture right, maybe stippling it on with an old brush

Agree Jeff, during the war, she would have been beached near the base of the dock at high tide, and as soon as tide started rolling out, crew would have had about 2 hours to get hull paint on. I don't understand why even small and complex shaped parts are not painted on the sprue, before being assembled in place. Just how do you paint the rear side of the steering wheel with a brush when it is glued already to the superstructure?
@funinscale2892
@funinscale2892 3 жыл бұрын
This boat was a special case, most of the parts should have been the same light grey when following the painting instructions, so when painting the back of the wheel, you can just squeeze in the brush - when the paint is properly thinned, there wont be bulges of paint sticking on the plate afterwards. When painting ships in bigger scales, i usually paint each deck and small parts individually before assembling all together. To be honest, sometimes i dont paint spots that you can't see at all when its finished, which is cheating, but its always situational. In general, I'm not a very precise modeller and i enjoy making the models rather quicker than focussing months on only one kit to being able to start new ones more frequently. This got a little bit long but hopefully you still enjoy the videos! Thanks for commenting!
