A shame all those palaces that were the new post war palaces are now closing, the march of time and the internet. Went to plymouth as a kid arond 1963, went back in 1983 to do a shop fitting, happy days .😊

And they wonder why some people want to save the Civic Centre! This was a massive post-war effort. I just wish they'd kept the concrete clean!

In the film it states "Dingles rising out of the rubble"when Dingles is the building further up Royal Parade and is complete so the building under construction is Pearl Assurance House

The modern Plymouth development after the war was beautiful. The pre war area was decrepit and poverty riven. I know because I was there and grew up in that time. Rebuilding in Belgium etc was to a standard of beauty before the war; Ypres wasn't a rotten Victorian rat hole as was much of old Plymouth. However, Plymouth today looks shabby and sad, but that is down to decades of ignorant Central Governments that don't give a crap.

A tragedy of the postwar Plymouth scheme was the decision to face the new buildings with expensive Portland Stone. Classy but the same colour as Portland Cement so everyone thinks it’s cast concrete crap. Doh!

It may have looked noce in the 50s, but now it looks like a town that was built in the 50s, old, shabby and very dated.

Fascinating archive footage... so valuable and so sad... we can only wonder what Plymouth may have looked like now but for the insanity of another European country.

And the council

@@jameskrell4392 Crap. Government underfunding is the major reason. Johnny, Germany wasn't a European Country it was a country in Europe, overcome by a huge far right load of rich ba##ards and old Military idiots, that were conning the ordinary people and installing a puppet figure as Chancellor/Leader and taking revenge for an awful post WW1 agreement mishandled by The Allies and especially the USA. That is the difference. I encourage you to read your factual history of the time to get the real truth.

After the First World War the Belgians rebuilt the devastated Ypres to look like it did before hostilities. After the Second World War the council destroyed what Adolf failed to and built giant stone boxes in a characterless grid pattern. Very sad.

Concrete brutalism. I only visited Plymouth when it was absolutely necessary. I thought it was pretty soulless.

It looks like so many nice buildings were torn down to make an ugly town centre!!

They were bombed by the Germans. Plymouth was devastated by the Germans because of the Naval base. The place had to be demolished.

Not completely. Abercrombie and his minions demolished many buildings that survived and some of those that even survived Abercombie, such as several lovely old buildings in Union street have just been left to rot. The corporation shows no love for their city, recently cutting down many mature trees in the centre to make way for.....?? Horrible. The Poles reconstructed the historic centre of Warsaw from zero! The result is a beautiful city. In Plymouth it is surprising that a small part of the Barbican survived Abercrombie's demolitions and motor city dreams ( nightmares I call them) @@bubba842
