An idea for head control on the puppeteering rig: make a mask for the puppeteerer to wear, with reflectors or QR codes etc. on it. Then point a camera at them and track their head movement, and translate that into the movement of the robot's head. Maybe you could even track the eyes of the puppeteerer, although I don't know how advanced the libraries for that kind of thing are

How about FaceTrackNoIR or a software that uses a camera to detect the pan/ tilt of a person's head to control the robots head? If it's being used for telepresence they will most likely have a camera set up looking at them and it frees up the users hands. Great video as always!

I'm loving this project! I have a rare idea that I would be a good feature. If you could put a button on the puppet that paused the motion of that limb, then you could lock an arm in a position while you mess with the head and then when you move that arm again, you can press the same button to resume and it will move over to where the arm is at that point. That way, you could also hold a pose if you wanted. Keep up the great work!

Great work! I'm amazed at how much you can do in a week or two! Looking at the main board I would probably move the emergency stops a little. As it is now, it looks like the button is covered by the DC lines to the motors. This is probably not a problem when you are working on them but when the robots are placed somewhere public it's probably better for the E-stops to be easily visible in case something goes wrong..

Very nice implementation! About the head lighting... humans open eyes UP and open mouth DOWN. (If we want to mimic humans at all.) You might want to start "openning the mouth" from the center for a more "robotic" feel, and for the eyes, you might want to go with a single dot (dot-pair) to mimic where to robot looks, and with s single line, when eyes close.

You might have explained why you did this and I didn't catch it, but if I were setting these up to integrate into a show I was on, I would prefer to have the 5-pin DMX in and through be the only connections I needed to get each robot up. The patch cable to the 3-pin XLR/RJ45 box seems unnecessary from an A/V perspective. If that could be hard-wired or permanently patched so that it doesn't need to be touched to connect each robot up, it would feel simpler.

For recording the puppeteering output, you could look to use a momentary foot pedal to ease finally snapshot the dmx values for where the puppet is and use that as steps in the sequencer. Fwiw, I've worked slot with freestyler over the years and I feel your pain. There are a lot of options for software, but quite a bit is pricey. Madrix may be a good, albeit expensive option. Also, you'd be able to use artnet to communicate with the robot and ditch all of those dmx cables.

Use a smart phone for eyes have the on screen eyes track the cameras focus, you could use all the phones movement sensors and the cameras for depth perception lidar etc by relocating the superior rear sensors or maybe use mirrors. Connectivity would lead to privacy concerns though no doubt, camera and sound could be streamed and saved elsewhere.
