Wyloch I have to say thank you for continuing to find “easy” crafts for us to watch and emulate. So many of the other crafters we’ve watched for years either only sporadically post now or use a lot more 3d printed things and unfortunately a lot of us can’t afford such luxuries. You however continue to give such great inspiration and I personally thank you so much.

You've probably already figured out or decided a solution but maybe you could put a trim of sidewalk or gravel around each building so it Blends more easily into a flat table top, that way you could use say a grassy mat or a cobblestone map and place them willy-nilly all over the place and get all sorts of cool angles with the buildings, like you see in medieval towns that don't necessarily have straight roads at their City centers

I always love your videos because the materials and techniques harken back to a simpler time where I was effectively dumpster diving and trying to stretch a dollar to decorate the table top. It was just the joy of crafting rather that trying to make things look like prefect minatures. The homemade accessible crafty approach to just have something better than books to play around. I just missed Baldurs Gate but that era aesthetic is burned into my soul and influenced a lot I grew up with. Honestly my first thought was Runescape lol. Your approach marries so perfectly to those old graphics. Probably why I love middlehammer stuff so much. It's a mood.

It holds so much loving memories, both the 1st & the 2nd. They are the definition of classic RPG's. A quick tip i use for the grating of the windows....i spray 1 side, the non sticky side, of a dry wall mesh tape black and then you can stick it on the windows before adding the frames on them. It is very thin and it lets you see whatever is below the tape perfectly well.

Would have gone with Bottle caps myself for those Columns. I go threw more Arizona tea's then I care to admit and those large caps would be good for some landmarks. Think of London's Nelson's Column, Trafalgar Square and/or Monument to the Great Fire of London. These are roman pillar's that have statues at the top (for some reason). Pepsi and Coke bottle caps would work for smaller columns. While I do not go threw as much Pepsi (out side of a family get together) as I do tea. You can almost find them every where if you spend the weekend cleaning parks and roadsides. Or just leave a collection cup out at work with a note saying you need them for them for craft projects.

Another amazing project! One thing I love about your tutorials is that you always remind us that what we do is up to us. You give us easy and affordable options, to use or not, that can look amazing. My key take away from the entire video is you trying to decide, are you emulating Baldur's Gate, or were you inspired BY Baldur's Gate. I generally look at stuff for inspiration, not really to copy exactly. I've been looking at the post-apocalyptic game Kenshi myself lately. I think your project is going great as is. Paired with the road tiles and set plan of working around 6x6, just great. I'm rambling now, but one last time, amazing job. Really looking forward to the follow on videos.

for the windows on the large townhouse, you might want to paint the wood pieces the same way Wylock did his batches of books. just a handful of spars in the hand and put some paint on top and rub it in with your fingers. its messy, but its just so much faster than painting them all individually with a brush.

I can't begin to tell you how this video has inspired me. I have loved the Baldur's Gate series ever since they came out. They were my entry point to all things D&D and CRPGs, and they sit next to Planescape: Torment as the best computer games I've ever played. I'm fairly new to this type of crafting, but I have decided, after watching this video, to build Candlekeep Inn, inside and outside. That's my new year's resolution. To me, BG and IWD were "new" DnD. I grew up playing BX and 1E in the 80s. It deffinately captures the spirit of DnD even if I don't see D20 and feats as actual DnD. Maybe the best video games ever, up there with Fallout 1, 2 and the OG Legend of Zelda.

So yesterday I was bored, none of my regular channels had uploaded new content for a bit, so… I downloaded Baldur’s Gate off Steam and start to play it, introducing my youngest to what awesomeness is. I wake up to find Wyloch making BG for real, and predicting an upsurge in downloads. For the first time I’m ahead of the curve, not last to the party. This looks awesome. I love Baldur's Gate. It was the first big RPG game I ever bought for PC. Such a great game. Baldur's Gate 2 blew my mind. I loved how I grew attached to not just my character, but my companions. Sooo good. I will say though, I think Story-wise, and music-wise, I do prefer Icewind Dale a little more. While I do like the idea of creating my own party from Icewind Dale, I did miss the banter that would occur from companions that we had in Baldur's Gate. So that aspect I did like a little more in Baldur's Gate. Especially part 2. Both games are just absolute gems in my eyes. Love them both. I am infact replaying Baldur's Gate now. I aim to go through 1, Dragon Seige (cause I've never played it) then part 2, then Throne of Bhaal (because I never got to play it).

I think designing with no roads is the way to go, that way the buildings can be placed on anything, as for the doors that are lifted up and the distance, make some joining spacers. basically like the road sections but only cobbles, that way each building can have a section where appropriate to connect to other tiles. personally I'd make each section with the intention of sliding under a building a inch or so, so the are not little faffy bits that will get knocked in gameplay, maybe some tabs to connect on the underside.
@Annarki2000

The thinner roads would have still worked perfectly fine considering the lore behind Baldur's Gate architecture was the roadways were thin ny design to help with defense of the city from invaders that breached the outer walls. Either way though, great work as always, good sir.

@20:00 "Just keep in motion, as long as you keep it damp, you'll be alright." Here's a tip that you guys might find to be helpful from the more traditional art world (canvas and the like). One of the core strengths of acrylics, the drying time, is also it's biggest weakness. This stuff just skins PDQ. Sometimes, you want to prevent that. In the traditional art world, this is mainly so that we can wet blend colors together like we would if it was an oil painting. What you can do is get yourself a fine mist sprayer and *lightly* spray the area you want to prevent from drying. There's some important notes to go with that though - The hardware store type sprayers will certainly not be fine enough and I know this from experience. What you want is the type geared towards cosmetics. You need a uniform ultra fine spray pattern. I would link one that I use but YT likes to nuke links. Just look up something like 'ultra fine water mister for cosmetics'. Some brands that make the right thing would be - delta, temu, flairosol, beutify, alpree. This does take a bit of practice to get right. Too little water and it won't be effective. Too much and you'll make your paint run. Don't use tap water in there. It'll go off and make the thing smell musty and moldy every time you use it. Since you're aerosolizing the water, it will be *very* noticeable. If for some reason you're forced to use tap water, don't leave it in there when you're done. Empty the thing and spray out all the water in the tube and leave it sitting open to dry out. Since you're painting on an absorbent surface here, it'll be important to wet the surface before you put paint down. If you follow these steps, you'll be putting wet paint on a wet surface and covering it with a film of water. The paint literally can't dry at all until the layer either under the paint or over the paint dries. This *might* be hypothetically useful for wet blending on miniatures too. I'm curious to know but I won't be trying it myself as I paint miniatures with oil paints. If you try it out for yourself, I would be very interested to hear your results. Edit - I did some searching and you can see a demo of the technique here v=p1Uk6mwaW1k

Rather than the painter's tape have you tried framing tape to seal the edges of the cardboard? It's an uncoated kraft paper, so it's pretty strong and definitely paintable. These days there's self-adhesive variants but the traditional option is a gummed paper tape. We used it recently to seal the edges of a costume for our four-year-old and it worked really well - super-durable, stuck quickly and painted over without problems, no hot glue required.

While I liked the Baldur's Gate PC games, the old Dark Alliance games are what really form the town for me. Especially the first chapter of the first game which is set there, and co-op with friends being fun with it. If you want another option for the roads, you can get a rather cheap thing for long strips of ones that are pretextured and decently colored if your local Dollar Tree still has some of their Christmas stuff out because there's 2" and 3" wide strips of cobblestone that you can unroll and use, if you want a different color, they paint easily enough. As a side note, when doing shingles, you might want to consider spending a bit of money on a paper cutter, I'd originally gotten one to cut some adhesive backed felt when I was making a few dice boxes/trays with some "cigar" boxes that Walmart has in their craft isle (I'd used the local library's maker space to engrave a cool image in the top with a laser, stained the wood, used the cutter to line the interior with the felt, and swapped the hardware for some nicer looking ones...needed one for myself due to getting some rather nice metal dice that could damage tabletops in some places). For anything with straight cuts on most paper based things up to some cardstocks (soft drink cases) it works great, and most have measurements marked on the base, so just start with two clean sides at a right angle, and you can keep going through it for the strips. Unfortunately, the later cuts are still a thing to do by hand, but that tends to go rather quickly with the strips that you need to measure being done quickly.
