Laying in bed this morning watching this and the missus gives me the side eye and says "all I've heard is spit, lube and slide, what the hell are you watching" I said get your head out the gutter Starlo's tying fishing knots. Hahaha had a good laugh. Great little beginner series mate 👍🏼

Love that! Actually, if you just hear the audio of LOTS of fishing videos and can't see the vision, they can come across the wrong way with all the breathless, excited stuff about "look at the size of it!", "what a beauty!", "OMG!", etc!

🎣 Hi Steveo, - With thinner lines, I fold line double then tie my knots onto what I need to, including the spool. I have to do it more carefully to keep the double loops together. 🎣

🎣 After I put a sliding sinker on, I put a bead on which protects the knot. Sometimes more than one bead and different colours in sequence. A short length of thin red and/or other colour electric wire tube on too, depends how I feel to. Hoping the colours will help attract fish too,! 🎣

When spooling up the line should come off a spool laid horizontal. Much less line twist. I do this myself and tension line as I wind on. Lars brother of Anna and schoolmate of Vaun Been fishing since I was 9 Started in Shoal/ river. Spent 3 yrs doing lap of the map in early 90 s.

Yep, lots of people prefer that method and if it works for you, stick with it. Truth is, however, that one cast and retrieve with a spin reel removes any “untwisting” action that might have been imparted by laying the spool flat, simply because of the action of the bail arm and orientation of the spool. There’s also the whole argument and decision making process about which way to lay the spool. Get it wrong and (supposedly!) you INCREASE the twist! All way too hard (and totally unnecessary) for my poor old brain, so I’ll stick to doing it my way. Each to their own. 😉

@@StarloGetsReelI lie the spool flat with the line coming off in the same direction as the rotor. If I detect any twist, then I just flip the spool of line over.

Handy hint for kids learning or grown ups , when tying your knots to start with, use a cork or piece of thick rubber to cover the hooks point so as not to hook yourself ,,,,After awhile you wont need the cork

Another tip re twist. Close bail manually not by winding. Saves at least quarter turn of twist each time. Ps. Say gday to Roger next time you’re looking at him.

I’ve been fishing for years but still have issues with tying knots and choosing the right rig. I use the uni knot on all terminals, but the Lefties loop knot on my hardbodies. However I’ve had no end of trouble tying the F.G.Braid to leader knot. It’s just not holding a lot of the time. Used to think it was imperative for the heavy tackle fishing, but learning, even more useful for finesse fishing. Other knots hit those light rods guides with their tag ends on the way through those minuscule last guides! Sorry for being long winded again. 😊

Good one Starlo. I use the improved blood knot all the time tying my mono to the swivel. I use the Palomar knot for my 60lb fluorocarbon leader😊

Your closing comment, particularly the word, “blindfold” brought back memories! My dad was the fishing badge tester for our local scout group back in the 70’s. For me to pass, I had to tie the blood knot in mono to a small hook while blindfolded. I passed and to this day, with deteriorating eyesight and glasses, I appreciate his teachings more! 😅
