Today we are building 2 large compost bins. We have goats and chickens in the barn that create a lot of waste and manure. We are planning on using these compost bins to turn that waste and manure in rich compost that can be used around the farmstead. These bins are large enough to use a tractor bucket or loader with them.

greetings evan; ponder this: i have set posts off and on all my life, from powerline poles to fence posts and there is a spiffy way to do it. dig your hole (remember, whatever you use is only as strong as the surrounding undisturbed earth), insert your pole and fill in around it with pea gravel. that is right, pea gravel. it will settle, pack hard but will be able to remove the post later if desired. it will not rot the post at ground line like concrete and you can utilise the post immediately without waiting for the concrete to set up. the only thing involved is taking two hammers and lightly pounding the post on opposite sides to make the gravel settle around it. i install corner posts around large garden plots and tension the wire with a tractor and the posts do not give (no bracing necessary). have a good day and thank you for the best videos that i follow on utube........g

I love that you showed a build for the compost bin that allows you to turn the composting material with the tractor. Its way,...way easier than doing it with a pitchfork which is how its done in most of the other videos. Looking at about 350-400 bucks in materials too,...that is almost comparable to those little spinny barrel things that wont handle volume like that.

We built almost the exact bins in 2017. After a few years of moisture the 2x6's loosened. Last month we finally had good compost and pulled it all for grow beds. I replaced the original 4" screws with 6" and the bins are super strong again. We also put a red house brick under the bottom front 2x6's to keep them off the ground. Was glad to see your design so similar to ours. Good building!

JudithB I set posts with rocks n dirt. One time we set driveway posts with concrete and someone hit one with a Datsun. Busted the post and it was a job getting that hunk of concrete out of the ground so I could put in RR ties. You could have dropped in the posts and screwed 2x around the top to hold it all square before adding concrete. I work most of the time by myself too, even at 72. I do stay off ladders unless someone is around!! LOL 6 dry days in a row so lots to do!!!

For the slide in boards should put shims on the ends of the bottom edge of each board to match the sides. Added benefit you can get your fingers under the sliding board to lift it.

That’s impressive! Probably the most sturdy compost bin I’ve ever seen. It’s almost a small barn. Put a slanted roof over it, it’d keep a lot of animals dry and spoiled happy. :) Great job! And dont worry about it being a bit out of square, it came together and will work just fine.

Spreading compost, manure . You load it onto you’re flat bed trailer. Rebecca drives the tractor and trailer slowly along where you want it spread. You ride on the trailer and with a suitable tined fork, you spread it a forkful at a time !, one each side, one over the back .It worked when I was a young man, a long time ago now, and it doesn’t need any more cash layout !. Good luck !.

Nice bins ! if you are worried about the back wall strength 4 diagonal 2x6 boards linking the bottom of the front posts to the TOP of the back posts, including a diagonal board in the same direction either side of the center wall would make it very strong. Diagonal bracing always adds tremendous strength if done right.

Looks so good if got farmer with horses that great to put in compost [ could some small branches of tree] bin we used go for a drive to get fruit& vegetables when ours weren't ready out in the country! There be place they be selling bags of horse or sheep manure at gate! What dad could done with one those for his tractor had few things too put it he dug all holes for fence poles be hand take few days to do a fence line! Old fences caused too more problems and big floods took them! The worsted storm we even had we had thunder, lighting most night dad moved the cows out lower paddocks where flooding couldn't get them ! Cattle and sheep all out creeks way we two streams [ not water nearly but when comes down off hillsides can become creeks!] and creek grows a huge river spread out over the flat paddocks! It biggest took our bridge been there 60 years Dad and Mum been in area most there lives! Our waterfall over quarry normally a foot wide was four foot wide you hear it top the hill before saw it! Local newspaper from town came out took photos we give a foot bridge they took a photo some local children walking across, took lots photo's there were huge holes in sides hills it looked a giant taken handful soil, trees large full grown ones! There huge piles of them and rocks , metal from quarry too, our paddocks were covered stuff!

great structure. I like that if you decide not to compost one day, you have the structure in place. you could easily convert into a shelter for pigs, or for chickens, goats, add a roof, a couple gates across the front, etc. you mentioning it isn't square is a nice heads up for anyone trying to build one but... you can't even tell. you could have gotten away without telling us. :-)

Nice job! Only thing I see to improve would be putting side boards on inside of the posts so pile pressure would push against post instead of it trying to push out boards and pull thru the screws. Can fix later if problem by thru bolting vertical boards to post from outside to prevent. Very nice bin and not an eyesore like some

I'm not trying to criticize, beautiful job but if you are worried about strength, you should cross buck the back and side panels to make it totally rigid. there's nothing like some triangles to stiffen anything up to where you'll be able to whack it just about anywhere, except sideways on the "front" (opening end) posts ... again,, nice work.. you are a monster can't believe all you get done alone !!

Probably could have spent the money in other areas of your farm that need renovating. Compost piles are usually temporary and set at different areas throughout your farm. No need to waste gas to bring all the compost to a central area. But it's one of the nicer compost set-ups I've seen.

It looks good. I think you should some coating to protect the boards. And you cad add some stuff to stack up 2*4s to you use once needed. You can put them a bit higher than ground so they wont be affected by moisture of ground. Like hanging them on right and left side.
