[Recorded: 7-16-20] In this video, I check out this old Sears department store that closed in December of 2018. The property is showing signs of disrepair, but the damage is not severe. I threw in some clips from my visit to this store during the last week it was open. There hasn't been any news about redeveloping this building, but I just hope its fate isn't like the rest of the mall.

Man, thanks for putting this video together. My family moved out of Sacramento when I was in elementary school in the early 90's, but I still have so many memories of even that parking lot and my dad trying to find a parking spot under the trees. My Mom and I would walk with the elderly people during the summer mornings in the mall. I still remember the outside facades of that Sears and the JC Penney's and the Weinstocks. Good times!

My dad used to work there on the weekends. He did bike repairs with his brother (my uncle) on the basement level in the early to mid 90s. He worked in that “random room” at 10:17 although it was a lot darker down there back then. I remember running up and down that staircase a LOT.

I worked at that Weinstock's from December 1981 to February 1982. I used to buy all my tools at that Sears. I used to go with my mom to Southgate in the late '60s. They had a great little playground on the south side of the buildings.

What a great place to put in multi-use community center with an indoor and outdoor skatepark! An ice rink or a roller rink would be great too! The City of Sacramento Parks and Recreation or Southgate Parks and Recreation should take over this site. It also has a great set up to host auto shop classes for local youth since they don't teach it in school anymore.

Super sad 😢😢😢 thank you so much for making this video. It brought me so many memories there… I remembered doing my work experience in the summer of 92 there in the Montgomery awards there. Shopping and all the good times there. I used to live a block from that mall, too! Moved away in 98. I have a feeling Sears closed because the Sears where I live now, closed at the same time. I don’t know why they didn’t Keep the building and make it to something else. Diminishingly it just not right! I rather have the empty building to go visit for me to remember all those memories. Thank you so much for for this visit and video. Wish I live closer so I can go visit it.

Cool video! I'm not sure if Southgate was big competition, but I remember going to both back in the early 1980s. Southgate had Liberty House, another dead dept store chain. It seemed like Southgate went into decline sooner than Florin mall. Both were very sketchy by the 1990s. In fact I think my last trip to Florin mall was to watch repair back in the early 90s! It was surprising that Sears remained long after the rest of Florin mall was demolished. It's cool that the Sears building still has it's vintage exterior.

Actually, Southgate was originally the main center that went nearly outdoors ghost mall in the 1980's. Then they went Walmart in the 90's and big box stores filling in the mall. They had a Sears and Weinstock until 68 and everything moved to Florin. Sears actually ownes the spot separate from the original owners. But it was the fault of Sears for basically becoming Kmart and going ghetto. However now! Both Southgate and Florin Town Center are doing better than they ever did. They adapted to the growing ethnic population and have a massive asian market and Walmart grocery store, Ross, Sketchers etc.

Back before Jeff Bezos was in kindergarten, Sears-Roebuck was the national giant of retailing. They sold virtually everything imaginable, had every product numbered and included in a huge catalog, were extremely well organized, and had a vast system of relationships with manufacturers and sellers as well as nationwide warehouses, appliance repair facilities, and delivery trucks. If, in the sixties, you could have predicted that such merchandising would switch from looking at a catalog and talking to an operator to looking and paying for goods on a home computer, the assumption would be that Sears-Roebuck would have the easiest time transitioning to that business model and would eventually totally dominate it, since Sears-Roebuck was already so well-prepared and successful at offering, selling and delivering practically anything remotely. But nope....

The whole spot is up for sale now as of April 2023 by Ethan Conrad and there are plans to put a "Raising Cane's" restaurant in the parking lot near the street edge. There is a very strong chance of a demolition, loss of history, and replacement by something completely unimportant. There was a boiler room, bomb shelter, and other areas in this Sears I wish would be documented before it is gone.

This bldg. will probably be repurposed. We lost our Sears about a year before this one closed and Essentia Health has already turned it into a clinic along with another store (Younkers) that closed about the same time. (JCP still goin' strong up there somehow.) The fact they're protecting it makes me think the bldg. will survive to do something else. But Sears in general, man! What the hell? They ruled the land for so many years with so many innovations... even built the tallest building in the world! They just seemed to stop innovating about 20 years ago and making some moves that were odd at best. (Buying KMart was, well, um... D'oh!) It's sad.
