*UPDATE VIDEO* Check out the update video that Diego made on his personal channel on how the water wheel is doing one year after this repair here: • Living Off Grid for 46...
On this episode of the Adventure Agents, Agent Strong Man & neighbor Al (a.k.a. Agent DB), rebuild a water wheel from scratch to generate hydroelectric power!
They replace the old wheel with a new one, and generate 12 volts of electricity using an old Chevy alternator. This will help supplement Al's solar power whenever there's enough water in his creek/pond (mostly during the winter/spring months). He can now use solar AND water to charge his bank of batteries, which supply him with completely off-the-grid electricity.

Thank you for sharing the update link! It's always great to see long-term results. By the way, have you considered the Segway Portable PowerStation Cube Series for your off-grid cabin? It's a reliable power solution with features like massive capacity, fast recharging, and comprehensive protections. It could be a valuable addition to your hydroelectric setup!

This video was awesome, for a lot of reasons, and here's one: it highlights the value and importance of community, creating it, and maintaining it! I am a power plant operator, qualified on combined cycles, conventionals and the ones I was primarily assigned to, those were super-criticals....much larger units, obviously, but this one is awe inspiring, because it is homemade, and now, the outcome of the community there, homegrown, and close to the heart. Thank you for sharing! I loved it!

Fascinating! I wish I had a creek close enough that I could do this myself! One thing, and you might know already, but if you have a block of wood backing the steel when you drill it, you will have almost no burring

I have visited Ohio's Clifton Falls several times and there is an old mill (converted to a restaurant) that uses a similar type of wheel, but of course, it was used to grind grain instead of generate electricity. This was amazing to watch - no kit, no industrial style made item: just some guys replacing and remaking parts to create a water wheel that produces electricity. It's ingenuity at its best!

Never apologise for being old Al, were are unlucky enough to live out the ones we love, but your knowledge and insight are inspiration to the younger generations. And thank you for recording and helping Al. As a young lad, I loved listening to the stories of my grandparents generation. They had seen so much change, from going to horse and buggy to automobiles, flying, and going to space. Stuff thought of as science fiction. Historians will lie to you because history is written by the victors. People’s stories will give you true insight to the past. Be well Al, live strong, love deep, laugh much.

Your dam right, to be aware and grateful of life and health.....we all take it for granted and wollow in self pity as such. I've had a Pelton wheel (900 watts, grid tied) in operation for the last 16 years, but lately have been planning to augment it with a water wheel, using the same stream. One advantage will be my power shack is only 50' from where the wheel would be. I have a crane, and 55' long 12" steel pipe that used to be my wind turbine tower, the plan is to set the crane up by a culvert that goes under my road (which conveniently channels all the creek water into a 30" dia. pipe), pick the supply pipe up and set one end about 2' from the where the culvert exits under the road. Then re-rig the down hill (I'm on a mountain side) end of the pipe, and slowly pick it up, while the uphill end (which will have a slotted gate to control the flow) rests in the creek bottom (all rocks) until water stops flowing out the end, then lower it again until I determine the mas flow versus the max height. Should be about 4 to 6 feet. If needed, I can extend the pipe to get more head, with the last bit being a flume to spread it out a bit. Then I'll measure the GPM, and using some old steel farm implement wheels I have in various diameters, cobble up a wheel. So, I'm scouring YT for wheel ideas! The same Outback VFXR battery based grid tied 3500 watt inverter I use on my 900 watt Pelton plus another 1000 watts of PV will be fed whatever I power I get, at 24 VDC, which the Outback instantly sends onto the grid. I will use a PM motor as a generator, and hope to keep the needed RPM's as low as possible, so less up gearing needed. Your setup could benefit from a chain tensioner, like bikes use, a spring auto keeps the correct tension with min drag and power loss. I never did see how many AMPS it's putting out?
@WireWeHere
@WireWeHere Жыл бұрын
A few idler sprockets or cheap replacement cam belt wheels would remove most of the stiction making startup difficult and reduce the friction at speed from becoming parasitic losses. The chain tension and tracking could require less hands on tweaks plus allow more of the energy to get to work turning the alternator although some of the volume may be lost while some noises may even be sacrificed.

@Aedus
@Aedus Жыл бұрын
The better wheel looks like it needs less flow to power the alternator at 12V. That means it's still viable during "drier" weather. When his creek is lower, just need to move the blocking door open more to get the same flow rate. Brilliant!

Cool build! Car alternators have low efficiency - in internal combustion cars, they don't need to be really efficient because bulk of the energy goes to moving the vehicle, and only a tiny amout gets converted to electricity. It'll be more efficient to use a generator specialized for wind turbines. But a car alternator is powerful enough for powering a cabin, and if it's possible to get one from scrap, no worry ;)
