A short clip from the Inishowen Rivers Trust project 'On the Ground' showing the construction of a leaky dam in Clonmany, Inishowen, Co. Donegal. Works contractor and forester on the project, Ross Buchanan, explains the construction process and how leaky dams work.
This project was funded through the EU LEADER Programme 2014-2020

Brilliant and ingenious - nature based solutions are cheaper, more intelligent and easier to implement than hard concrete engineered solutions. We have no time to lose, to get back in relationship with Nature and work with her instead of against her. Well done Inishowen Rivers Trust!

Doesn't this cause erosion under the dam where flow speeds are increased?

Why not use beavers? They make it look more natural and create large bodies of water for other wildlife to thrive.

hello, this needs to be done with rocks not wood, wood will rot away in 2 years or so, there are no beavers to replace it constantly.

Can't agree that it's a good design. While it sounds nice, the fact is that the water is going to eat out the channel even deeper as it's forced under the dam. If you're building a leaky dam, the best design is what beavers have been doing for a million years. They're the experts. The further from that design you get, the less efficient it will be. For as much time and effort goes into just one of those dams, you could have built three or four Beaver Dam Analogs.
