Today at Badgerworks, we look at a subject that has been requested many times - building a model using just brushes, no airbrush. Additionally, we're building this model pretty much out of the box - no aftermarket paints or finishes, no decal setters, nothing - just the paints and glue from the box, some cheap brushes from The Works and some makeup from the Pound Shop for weathering.
However, we will answer an often asked question - is it possible to mottle paint using a normal brush...?
The end result will be the subject of a charity auction on ebay to support Models for Heroes, a charity that provides models and equipment to armed forces and veterans charities across the country.

It’s been 63 years since my first kit and it was this exact Airfix model! About 6 months ago I picked up this same starter kit at my local Aldi. After watching your fantastic video I am inspired at 74 years of age to build it and return to what gave me so much pleasure all those years ago. I actually had a full blown ‘battle of Britain’ suspended from my bedroom ceiling on fishing line, with a Lancaster, a Wellington, 3 or 4 Spits and a similar number of ME 109s. All Airfix! Then I discovered girls. Thanks so much, I really enjoyed the video.

Happy memories, every kids first kit an Airfix Spitfire, I left school and worked in model shop while waiting to join the RAF, selling lots of them. Two years later I was working on real Spitfires

Great build. Really enjoyed watching. Took me back 52 years when I built my first model at age 12. Yes, it was the Airfix Spitfire. Had to learn all the tricks by "trial and error." My missus even watched along for the last 20 mins.

there are far more parts and each part is far more intricate than the Airfix 1/72 Spitfire I must have made nearly 60 years ago! But around age ten, I was doing something similar with the glue from those tubes to avoid huge dollops flopping out and dissolving half the kit. I tried to interest my son and got him what was a similarly simplistic Spitfire when he was about 8 - no interest. Daughter would have been much keener even up to scratch-building. Too many other interests to take up modelling after 50 years but very impressed with what you achieve. One or two lads my age were much more serious than me (and they had more money for kits, paints, and brushes) but I did peak at some very good examples - Liberator, Focke Wolfe, Sunderland, and some WW1 biplanes and triplanes - before I put the old cigar boxes of paints away forever.

That's how I built them as a kid! Simple and straightforward! Today we spend countless hours building putting, sanding, priming, painting and lots of money on aftermarket and time making a model go on for months. But back in the 70's we could lift a finished model off the workbench in a few days. Of course my early ones looked sort of OK or lousy but we got better with experience and patience. But with all the accessories and aftermarket we have today, when was the last time we went back to our early approach and built a model with a stringy tube of stringy glue and a paintbrush? We can't! New aftermarket and accessories have changed the way we build and enables us to nitpick over every part and accept nothing less than than perfect, so we have spoiled ourselves! This video reminds us of how it all began before we turned into plastic model Rembrants! You might be on to something for the kids who are just starting out whereas most guys post up videos light-years ahead of the beginners so keep this Idea going as we need more kids doing this!

I second and third that , I too have been drawn into being a rivet counter , and got to admit modelling was becoming a pain , got myself a couple of these kits and done them from box and bloody enjoyed myself , back to basic modelling for me , after all that's how we all fell in love with it .

Very true I love this video!, I bought a starter set Spitfire Airfix kit hoping to get back to modeling after graduating high school, but I only washed the sprues. it sat in my room inside the box for months until now. I had plans to suspend the planes on my ceiling as I wanted to give my room some character, but because I wanted to be a perfectionist, it only got me procrastinating. after seeing this video, it gave me some motivation to want to finish the kit without having the need to be perfect or that it has to be a 100% five-star model. plus, most say to not suspend your best models on the ceiling anyway so off to start my spitfire! great video, thank you for inspiring me!

That is how we built models back in the 60s and 70s. When you first started painting the paint looked like something you would paint your house with but you made a great job of it.

Yes, the paint definitely needs to be treated very differently when applying with a brush :-)

I’ve bought several of those since they started doing them. I find the weak point is the varying thicknesses of the different paint colours when it comes to brush painting. Some are so thin they barely adhere and others are like soft butter. They dry to a nice finish though.

@@Tom_KZfaq_stole_my_handle Absolutely, the varying densities can be a pain, but that's one of the reasons I like the wet palette - makes it easier to maintain a consistent density.

Back in the day that is ALL we had them along came liquid polly. I use to use the knife to scrape the glue seems than paint the seem first, it worked like filler. The only tool I had was a set of nail clippers with a nail file. How things have changed. Enjoyed this build mind

I've used nail clippers and a nail file. You can buy nail sets from the Pound Shop/Dollar Store that are great if you're on a tight budget. I've also got a number of kits in my stash that came from charity shops.

Absolutely chuffed to bits I found this channel. With Lockdowns and now Tier 3. Not being able to do much has been demoralising to say the least. I found this channel and thought I'd try a model or two. The RAF Hurricane and now Spitfire. Now I'm hooked. Taking a week to complete a 1:72 model but planning what I will do the next day allowing for parts to dry etc..I even bought myself a cheap airbrush and compressor and love it. So thank you for the advice you give in your videos. The paint colour codes have been particularly helpful. Keep up the great work and have a Merry Christmas.

If I remember correctly there were shelves full of kits costing 55p for the small kits and £1:10 for the large kits. Problem I had was I only got 50p pocket money 50p a week God I feel old now :-)

My dad used to use soapy water for decal setting. Stuck like hell once dry. Might work better than vinegar.

I was up all night enjoying your vids. You really are very expert, however what makes me smile is how you guys who have all the gear, make such a fuss of crap paint, gunky glue & painting with a brush. It's all I've ever known. The only additions I use are; my wife's tweezers, her make up and brushes for weathering and a Swiss Army knife. So, my hobby is very affordable, not as superb as your results, but not bad. Keep up the good work. ( You may well tempt me to spend more on better gear) Oh, I should've watched to the end before I commented, good use of eye make up.

Yip for the £1 shop glasses. I have +3.50 with clip on +2.0 I can flip up and down for even closer stuff, so 2 magnifiers in one, great for painting minis

A quarter century on and I personally still use tube cement primarily (testers), my tip, squeeze a dollop on to a piece of cardboard and use a toothpick to apply it to the part. Also living in a 3rd floor apartment has made an airbrush impractical so I’ve been really focusing on brush painting, needless to say, I loved watching this build!

What a stunning and beautiful work you've done. I never thought it could be possible to get that level of refinement on painting. The mounding of the model is outstanding great. I have my own Mk1 in 1/24 and I would say, the smaller, the better. What I liked the most was the cockpit all together with port side hatch opened. I guess that this model/airplane would be a show stopper. My compliments for the great work you've done. Kudos!

Wow what an excellent and interesting video. Only just come across your channel and have now subscribed. Been an aircraft and railway modeller for 50+ years and yes it takes me back to see it done like I used to years ago before airbrushes and all of todays paraphernalia. “NO aftermarket paints or finishes....JUST what is in the box..”” GREAT VIDEO, Just what I have been looking for, to show my daughter who has NEVER BUILT a kite, and does not know if she will enjoy this “model-making thing “ . Purchase ONE item... The Kit.....ONE item... Get Started. Announcer: “Right, spray it all with primer......” Daughter: “Dad, what???” WHEN will I ever find a video directed to an ABSOLUTE TOTAL BEGINNER, ABSOLUTE TOTAL AMATEUR who wants to make the ABSOLUTE LEAST INVESTMENT, to start AS ABSOLUTELY AS EASILY as possible, who is ABSOLUTELY NOT looking to build, or paint, THE PERFECT MODEL... They just want to “check it out”, see what the ABSOLUTE BASIC process is all about, and end up with something EASY TO DO. IF they like it, enjoy the process, or have fun... THEN AND ONLY THEN do they want to even THINK about investing any more time or $$. And before anyone states (or questions) The Obvious... ->Mother and Daughter are convinced Dad is incapable

I don understand your point, but I would counter by saying you don't have to use primer, but the paint will go on way easier if you do, and rattle can primers are cheap and easily available. If you want something very quick and easy like that, I would suggest perhaps an Airfix Quick Kit might be worth looking at. I appreciate the feedback in any case.

I ended up getting one ofnthese spit starter kits for my Xmas from my wee cousin I thought to myself probably never build it but the modeler in me took it out the box for a nose and its a stunning wee kit so it is! Must be new moulds because always remember what you said about flash n that! But nothing on it and plastic is alot lighter grey it has 2019 stamped but maybe just cleaned the old moulds up or something but think I'll build it now because looks as good as some 48s and 32nd

Extremely fine work! Using a white primer rather than a grey primer would have made the painting easier, especially with the white underside. Highlighting the panel line was good, as was the seat belt. Excellent video and great work.

You might be right about the primer, but I find with this kind of colour scheme the white primer can make the colour coats too bright. It's a question of taste, I suppose. Either would work, it depends on what end result you want.

Great video! I’m building that kit currently, and yes, the pins are bit too large for the holes. I wound up cutting and sanding them off. A much better fit after their removal.

looks great, i use a piece of kitchen roll to push down on the decals, it pushes them into the panel lines and squeezes out excess water and any air bubbles, i have done this on every model, no matter what scale for the main decals, not with small stencils then i use a dry soft brush, works for me.

I call 'em deckles too! P.S. I'd have drawn out the camo pattern on the wings with a pencil (if you get it wrong, much easier to rub out than paint!) and just done the brown bits, then the green bits. (Other smartass comments are available.)

Normally I'd mask the camouflage with putty and spray it, but for a one off, this was easier just to do freehand. As I mentioned in the video, the only reason I do the whole thing brown first is because apparently that's how they were done at the factory. It's not necessary, of course, but it's just my little nod to the often unsung folks who built these things in the first place :-)

Duh, Dollar Tree reading glasses! Now you tell me after I spent $12 on a cheap chinese "magnifier". Excellent job by the way. My first attempt at brush painting after a couple of decades was messy in comparison.

You can make a basic wash from dark paint, water and washing up liquid, which i find to be quite effective. I think that counts, as long as you use the paints from the kit of course!

Airbrush cleaner also can be used as poly cement glue as it does the same job and you can get big bottles that will last you longer than tamiya extra thin or any other model glue on the market

@@SteamGeezerUK yeah i brought the liquid poly is the small bottle before i knew about the thinner trick but yeah in the future il think about getting some airbrush thinner and try it out and as for the starter kit glue i use it to mix with the sprue and use it as a filler takes a good couple to 3 days to go off properly

Don't always trust the plan/box. Old German tanks kits from Revell (Matchbox) had Red (bricksred) as camouflage color

I don't think that I've used tube cement since about 1976-ish. Having fingers like sausages meant that it tended to wander a bit. I got an old Airfix 'Ford Trimotor' kit a couple of years ago. It was completely sealed, and, because I'm a heathen, I opened it, to find, inside, a tube of 1970's era cement. I was more interested in that, than the kit. It was a tremendous nostalgia rush. I'm not going to open it - it now lives in an old tobacco tin - but I was wondering if it was the stuff that smelled of toxic chemicals, or the stuff that smelled pleasantly of oranges? I'll never know. It's my 'Schrödinger's Cement,' if you will. My go-to now, is Tamiya Extra Thin, and Plastic Weld. The intake might be in two pieces to allow the fitting of a tropical filter, like the Vokes, on different marks of Spitfire.

That glue !!! Used to make kits lying of the floor infront of the fire (was only 8ish )My mum used to go mad when that stuff got in the carpet. Then the bloody dog used to try and push her way in, Doh, Paint on the carpet aswell..... They were the days, 60s and 70s....

I would always defer to you being an absolute expert and wonder how you pull off such wonderful builds but please would you mind a bit of constructive criticism. I noticed you use cocktail sticks to help you glue yet you've never used them as a paintbrush it would have been so much better when painting that set with highlights if you have dipped the end of a cocktail stick in the paint and use it as a pen they make brilliant fineliners for edges as well as other paint tasks. Once again please accept my profound apology trying to tell a master how to do his job

This was wonderful, and, yes I was holding my breath when you started to paint the green. I've just started building models again after I found out my son started doing so (I'm in my 60s, he's in his 30s !) so we're picking up where we left off too many years ago. I have two questions: 1. The wet tray- is that water? Dumb question, but didn't know if that would be a problem with the paints. 2. Your wetting solution- I remember putting some on the surface BEFORE laying down the decal. I don't recall if that was an actual instruction, and I do remember at least one time it was too much. Anyway, thank you for a really enjoyable experience.

All we had were Humbrol Enamel paints...even trickier to get a good result...no Acrylics back then. Used to stink the place out with the smell of Polystyrene glue and White Spirit paint thinner! I found a Trumpeter 1/24th scale Hurricane up in my attic, it's from so long ago I don't remember buying it. I have had so much fun with the hours of work detailing it and got 4/5ths of the way finished and messed up the canopy...it's still sat there 6 months later...lost interest in it, which is one of my major faults. I will probably use it for crash scene diorama in a few years time, but for now it just sits there hidden away.

@@SteamGeezerUK I cut too deep with the scalpel when masking it for paint and also got out of line and left some nasty marks in the glass. I will break the glass panel and make it look like a very near miss just past the pilot's head and ricocheted off the armour plate. I am going to turn it into a repair crew scene if I can find some 1/24th figures …best I can find so far is a set of Rally Mechanics that I can adapt...can't find 1/24 RAF crew anywhere.

Interesting and inspiring video. Picked up modeling again after years of pause. I am still using brushes, but am thinking about switching to airbrush. What is the stuff you use to hold the cut out door to the stick for painting? Is it some kind of putty?

If you're having problems with a build, it sometimes helps to put the project to one side and do something else, and then come back to it afterwards.

Very nice job, especially as hand-painted work. I'm still trying to understand why many (internet) builders put internal parts together first before painting them? It seems to be a popular way of going about things. F knows why, surely, it's easier to touch-up after assembly rather than try to get a paint brush in there? I suppose I must be 'old school', or missing something (which I doubt). And as for those that paint everything on the sprue/gates, etc, and put them in a frame, 'kin realy? Gertcha! Whinge over, keep up the good work.

Sometimes it's just easier and cleaner to assemble parts first, especially if they need filling or something, but yes, it can also be easier to paint parts separately and touch them up afterwards (stop laughing at the back).

Tamiya Thin or Extra Thin Glue is excellent.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I actually use an industrial solvent, methyl ethyl ketone, but it's really nasty stuff and I wouldn't advise using it. Tamiya Extra Thin Quick Setting is a good choice if you can find it.

(This isn’t my own idea I learnt it form quick kits) if you use watered down pva glue where the decals will go and after they are down it stops a lot of the slivering and helps them settle into the panel lines etc.

hey mate you are not as old as me and i call them transfers not deecals or decals i will be 74 in a few weeks time when i first bought an airfix spitfire i cost 2 shillings was in series one model paint then was enamel gloss you added talcum powder to it to make it matt tip from revel instructions maybe apout 1956/7unfortunately the transfers were quite glossy so without covering wit a matt varnish they stood out like a sore thumb and this was long before airbrushes spray painting was done in the garage to repaint your car after it was damaged ha ha nice job keep it up

They are but it's way better if you use quite warm water and let the decal soak for 40 seconds. As well as put water on the area your applying it to so you can position it easily.

You could, but keep in mind the colour of the primer affects the coats above it - a darker primer will mute the colour coats, a lighter primer will make them brighter.

It just helps the decal adhesive dissolve easier and adds a little flexibility to the decal. It's particularly helpful with older decals.

Its a very interesting video to watch and its clearly taking a wallet-friendly approach which is ideal for people on a tight budget or just getting started, but to state that its "using just what comes in the box" is thoroughly misleading. Rather than using the extra brushes, makeup, additional tools etc, it would be interesting to see what actually can be achieved with only what comes in the starter set - then you can show exactly what the issues are with the starter set contents and where an aspiring modeller is best advised to spend their cash on tools etc. I say this as someone who has been making models on and off in plastic and wood, for nearly 30 years, and still dont think I'm particularly accomplished. I do worry sometimes that this is the sort of pastime that wont appeal to younger generations which I feel is a shame.

I bought these brushes from the works really NOT GOOD THE HAIRS COME LOOSE AND STICK TO YOUR MODELS! Only get used for weathering now but still using the tweezers to pick the bristles out now and again! My hobby shop was finally open after the weekend there so got my red sable set again!

@@SteamGeezerUK yeah it's the second set and same has happened! There ok fornthe weathering, I'm using them now for streaking and had afew bristles left on the model there! It's not happening as much as what they do when new! Must just be shedding there looser hairs haha!
