Matt is in Saratoga Springs, NY this week talking to a custom-home builder, remodeler, and building inspector, with 51 year of experience, about the building science behind remodeling old homes.
This demonstration is intended for professionals only. Homeowners should not attempt these projects without first consulting a licensed professional.

I love old timers who like to talk about what they do. There is a lifetime of knowledge and screwups to learn from there.

I was and am totally fascinated by what I saw. I learned so much from this video. One of the things that comes to mind is what all it takes to improve & ensure the floors are even. I am fascinated by your knowledge and the knowledge of the contractor. I am looking forward to seeing more of these videos. Thank you for increasing my knowledge, this is great appreciated.

Great video! Learned a lot and now have a new perspective on what I need to consider. When we bought 50 acres near Albany, it came with an 1800's farmhouse that we were told was a "knockdown". I'm hard pressed to tear the old beauty down with all its history and all. As your video noted, with a good roof and solid foundation, anything in between can be restored. It may also be cheaper than an entirely new home project.

Great job on this one! It worries me though to think about what's going to happen in 20-30 years when the Rich's and Matt's of the industry aren't working anymore. I feel like there are fewer and fewer contractors out there with that level of knowledge.

I literally missed the most important part, you you put 2x4s over the subfloor and then plywood over that. This makes your air gap, really large one, so that it handles any moisture that comes through.

Only pouring a concrete slab isn't enough to allow jacking up the floor joists. You have to have some sort of foundation.
