I recommend the 5.3 Alpair. Used in my small room they sound amazing with a touch of bass lift on tone controls. Baby lab cabinets

Tempted - I got the CHN-50s for close listening for building a small boombox using a RPI4 and power dac/classD output using the small slotted design on their website. I stuck the two speakers together, added a touch screen but I think the Mrs was a little put off by their size (compared to a Roberts radio!) so she never really used it. Hence looking at a larger cabinet to house them to get some additional base response. Only thing is as I'm close in (0.5-1.5m) with the computer I was thinking of switching to a paper coned P73/Alpair 10" and making a set of bookshelf speakers instead. Decisions, decisions.

Fairly good for a 3" driver but would best be paired with a small sub. But, depends what type of music you listen to!

I've noticed that DIY speaker builders do not use a T-nut and machine screw to mount the driver, instead using wood screws. Any reason why?

For relatively small speakers, screws are perfectly adequate. A nice 15inch woofer may be a different story though!!

question if anyone can answer...can the shape of the box be changed but retain the same internal volume to achive more or less the same sound?

I reckon yes!! (especially when using this sort of 20watt speaker) Sat listening to classical music on a square set (featured on the channel) and sound great and so easy on the ears!!

Nope. The "quarter-wave" part of the design means that the length (height) of the chamber is designed along transmission line rules. That's not to say a different box would sound worse, but changing the dimensions WILL change the sound profile and likely require other recalculations since a Helmholtz port in a standard box follows different rules than a mass-loading port in a MLTL design. (Edit) The Mark Audio site for the CHN-50 has plans for 15 different box designs, though about half are multi-driver. Lots of options to choose from where someone else did all the math!

Absolutely beautiful but it seems like a lot of work for one three inch driver.

I suppose it depends on your view on how a three inch driver can sound! 😁

@@DIY-AUDIO Well I am sure you know what you are doing and it sounds much larger than a 3" driver.

This might be a dumb question but why not make the cabinets out of veneered board? Is it a time vs cost issue? Is there any benefit to using a product like Dynamat inside speaker cabinets or are softer surfaces better?
@DIY-AUDIO
@DIY-AUDIO 11 ай бұрын
Possible I suppose but, to get really accurate cuts you will need a great blade and better table saw that I have and a slight miss cut will be expensive. If you look at the build design they recommended this type of stuffing. Best of luck
