This is a picture slide show of the building process of a Stewmac 000 kit. I think it will give you a general idea that you can build a guitar at home with a minimum amount of tools.
Stewmac kits are of very high quality and the documentation is top notch. Tha building manual and the complimentary instructional video are precise and clear. They really help you alot in the most difficult passages. Being my first guitar it was both a challenging and exhilarating experience.
The pictures are accompanied by music played on the instrument i built.
The songs are:
Plum Jam - Staffan Svahn 0:00
Messin' around in DADGAD - Staffan Svahn 3:05
Red Hills - Staffan Svahn 6:25
Sleepin Tune - Gordon Duncan, Arr. by Tony McManus 10:45
Ca' Nöa - Staffan Svahn 13:31
Travelling Home - Staffan Svahn 17:22
I recorded "squirrel" with a Zoom H4n and the sound has not been manipulated in any way.
I hope you enjoy the journey.
I wish you all the best.

YIKES!!! The amount of tools to buy, to do this kit right cost more than the kit itself (that is, if you buy them from StewMac). I have built and painted lots of electrics guitars (mostly strats) and I was interested in trying my hand at a 000 or the OM, but this video scared the crap out of me. What with the talk of everything being done to perfection and with words like Complex, Delicate, intimidating, measuring and remeasuring, just right neck fit etc..etc... as much as I want a OM guitar I think I will wait on building one till I can acquire the right tools. Peace

Thanks for posting, great job. I am in the process of pricing the tools, I saw at the beginning that you have the array of Stew Mac tools, I am sure having the proper tools helped things run smoother. I am planning to do the OM, hope I can muster the skill and patience you exhibited. I love that slotted head stock, but wanted to get as close the Clapton model as I could. Once you have all the tools needed doing a second guitar wouldn't be as costly, oh well, we'll see.

Hello Allen, Along with this kit I bought Their Acoustic Guitar Kit Clamp Set and The Tripple-O Guitar Kit Tool Kit. ( They have a specific tool set for the OM. Buy that because it contains the right router bit bearing fto rout the binding) I also bought Titebond and CA glue in different viscosity. I also bought Stewmacs Saddlematic. It is great help when you determine the position of the bridge. I also invested in a plunge router. You will need that to rout the bindings. All other supplies you can get from your local DIY shop when it opens again. Good luck and happy building Staffan

Hi Gabriel, Thank you for your kind words. Yeah, it is addictive. I am finnishing my third now and will soon start my fourth. My second, also a Stewmac kit, was a Dreadnought. It turned you really great. The third is a 000 again. I bought a Stewmac kit, but this time I have made my own top out of Honduran mahogany, with rope binding and my own rosette design. It is coming along well and I hope to post some new videos soon. Thanks for watching. Best wishes

Hi Staffan.Wonderful sound,Lovely tone. When you have a guitar that sounds this good you don't need a band.Did you cut the cardboard mold yourself or did it come with the kit? I'm just about to start assembling/ building my first kit and was wondering if cardboard would be better than styrofoam because cardboard is easier to cut.

Wow! Wow! I don 't know if I'm more impressed by your craftsmanship or your playing because both are simply top notch. While shopping for a solid wood guitar, I started investigating these kits and am now considering building my own. I see you built a lot of this inside your home which I would also have to do, since my garage is not temperature or humidity controlled. This looks to be a several month project even without the french polish and I worry if perhaps the final sound will not reflect the amount of work I put into it. I assume the top is where 90% of the sound of the guitar comes from. How do you go about tuning the soundboard and is there a point when you just 'know' you have the bracing shaved properly?

Hello, Thank you for your kind comment. When i built this I really didn't really have a clue. I studied the videos on the Bourgeois channel. He explains quite eloquently how he does. I was very conservative while carving and still the sound of this guitar is quite pleasing. I have since then built a number of kits. I am now building my first guitar from scratch. it is a parlor and I am having alot of fun. best wishes

Beautiful work. I appreciate your dedication; very inspiring. I had built an electric guitar from a kit - but was no where as intensive as this kit (my neck came fully constructed). Right now planning an electric build from scratch. Would love to see your next build - anything planned?

Hello Dan, Thank you for your kind words. I think I will try out a tele kit in the future. Building from scratch must be a great experience. I am not there yet. I just bought a limited edition dreadnought kit from stewmac with birdseye maple back and sides and an Engelman spruce top! I am very excited! I will document the build again so look out for a video in the future. Thanks for watching and commenting. Best wishes

That guitar sounds bright, clear & full, amazing. You're very talented too. Thanks for sharing your build! Could you be so kind as to elaborate on using shellac for tear outs? I get what it does, but what I don't understand is this - doesn't doing this stain the wood? I assume there was still sanding to do, etc. Does the shellac just stay there? Do you remove it? What happens to the shellacked areas after your done cutting? Thanks, Blake
@staffansvahn

Hello! Thank you for your kind words. I use a blond shellac that does not stain the wood and it is easily sanded off. It is also the same shellac that I use as my finish. After routing the channels there is alot of sanding still to be done before the guitar is ready for the final finish. Thank for your interest. Best wishes

Hi! It was my first guitar so I bought the "Stewmac 000 guitar build tool set" and "Acoustic guitar kit clamp set". I also bought Stewmacs "saddle matic" and some brace chisels... and of course Titebond and super glue. ( espescially the thin viscosity type)
