The issue in reverse is the tender!! If you look closely, the clearance in the tender wheels is allowing the tender to rock back on the wheels and quite literally apply the brakes!!! When you're going forward the wheels move back in the guides and the brake blocks are clear!! Either add some additional clearance to the blocks, or tighten the slots for the axels... That said... SUPERB model Sam... a work of art!!!!

The boiler wheel cut out is way upper than it should be, lower it for the next model so that there's no gap between the boiler and the wheel decorative splasher. For the problems in reverse: The wheels of the tender get stuck, they have no space of free movement.

Really great stuff Sam. One thing to note that might be of use; where you get issues of warping on the resin printed parts (it was more noticeable on that first wagon you made), the printed parts can be gently heated in warm water (not hot) and possibly eased into the true shape. I've done this successfully on long thin parts , although larger items like the loco body might be tricky. Either way, best of luck with the final build!

Really great work on this! For the reversing problem, try adding a spring to the front wheels. I suspect that the main drivers are tipping the front down just slightly, causing the back wheels to lift off the track and lose traction. A properly tuned spring will keep the front held up so all 4 geared wheels stay on the track.

Well done, Sam! I am impressed. For a model of this quality it might be worth having the final version painted and lined professionally. Incidentally, perhaps you would consider donating a copy of your CAD drawings etc. to the LNWR Society who have a very active modelling section.

These locomotives were painted in a green livery (the LNWR had two express passenger liveries, red for southern division & green was northern division), of course they were painted in the standardised black livery in later years but the green is a very interesting livery given most people have only seen the Black on Cornwall & the preserved coal tank

Two words, spectacular and gorgeous. It looks like the photo op protype with the photograph Grey color. Hope this success with the resin means you'll try to do some larger tender locos especially ones that never got built but have blueprints like the GWR Hawksworth's pacific or even the LMS Fowler pacific or even another freelance design. Or even "one-offs" like the 4-6-4 Hudson-type Tank that the Midland railway did(I think the lbscr did a 4-6-4T too). Anyway, love the behind the scenes prototype video. Can't wait for the main reveal!!!

The Problem class 2-2-2 has been my favourite British steam locomotive since I first laid eyes on it in a book as a 3-year-old... You're building my dream model here Sam, I didn't think I'd see it modelled in my lifetime in HO. If you ever think about making more than one of this beautiful locomotive, I'll be first in line to buy one from you. Don't care that I'm literally on the other side of the world in an ex-colony, this is my 'dream' model, and I'm loving watching you slowly bringing it to life

Hi Sam, I might be able to comment on your rod length issue. In a professional engineering environment I think we would deal with this in one of the following ways. 1. Tolerances. Rather than defining the length as 12.2mm, we would define 12.2 (plus/minus 0.5mm) and ensure the part works in that range, modifying the design if needed. 2. Decent clippers. Providing you are UK with a slight champer on the end of the wire (looks like you're hiding the ends) a good quality, hard edged clippers (knipex or similar brand) would allow you to clip to an accurate point especially combined with a jig (which you could 3d print). 3. A chopsaw set up. In this case you would need them Dremel mounted in a fixed position and a stop at the correct distance. Push the wire to the stop, then drop/plus the Dremel across the wire producing a cut at the correct length. One other point, at camera level you can see daylight through the boiler via the wheel slits which looks odd. Could you add an underside to the boiler in the wheel area? Otherwise your steam will escape!

Suggestion! Give it a slightly thicker layer of primer so the layers from printing will vanish completely and the wet sliding decals will adhere better to the finished piece.

Blimey, this must have taken months but extremely worth your while. The finest project done by you yet Sam! We can imagine the learning curve in terms of research, precision, detailing and actual execution, e.g. perhaps it would be best to actually postpone adding the tiny fragile details during the build as long as you possibly can to avoid breaking or damage since the model seems extremely fragile. Will the 3D printed internal driving cogs hold over time in terms of wear of their teeth Sam? On the plus side, new parts is just a matter of re-printing of course. Fantastic project! Just wow 💓 Cheerio.

Yeah very much so - I think it was worth the time though, definitely the best results I've seen so far! That's right, that's definitely the plan... add the fragile bits once the thing runs! We'll have to see how long the resin gears last... though as long as it's more than a year or two, I'm happy to replace them once in a while! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Sam, this is a brilliant model already, and only moderate change I'd consider making is using POM (Polyoxymethylene) Acetal (aka: Delrin) instead of resin for the gears for the durability and low friction nature so the gears will mesh and release from each other with less risk of breaking apart due to torque application and theoretically last longer than in resin. Though, that might involve having to outsource the gear production to someone who works with POM-Acetal, or hunting down batches of gears in the right tooth counts which could be used for further prototypes (or even as part of a hardware kit for this loco for others to purchase and save them time).

Watching your iterative process is inspiring. Thanks for sharing your full process. You should get good results with some standard rail nippers for cutting the 1mm rod stock. Also, if you plan on continuing with the light gray resin, invest in a contrasting silicone mat to make those small bits stand out.

Resin printing really improves the resolution. The model looks great! I found the gearing to drive the rear wheels along with the main drivers particularly impressive. A bit of tender weight may help with the handling.
@patrickwines9551

I'm surprised how little weight is in that, I'd add a bit more and see if it helps the slipping. Also might need a spring over the non driven wheel to help it push on the driven one.

More 3D design if you can and a few more of your visits to heritage railways from time to time. Mate, that looks incredible; you should feel really proud of yourself. You might well be producing the best-running early period locos out there with that gearbox design you came up with - that was a really clever idea. I know selling ready-to-run models probably isn't worth the hassle for you, but I genuinely think you should consider selling this in kit form, even if that is on a print-to-order basis. Especially if you did some unpowered wheels

In all probability you've already spotted this on the video, but with the possibility that you hadn't, on the subject of the loco struggling to reverse and wheel-slipping, I did notice a couple of times that when you were trying it in reverse, the front set of tender wheels seemed occasionally not to be turning freely, while the rear two were turning perfectly, so possibly some issue there might have been hampering movement in that direction? Around 28:14 is a good place to spot it. It's a beautiful design, and the finesse of the parts is absolutely amazing. I love the beautiful curved shape of those huge splashers, and the spoked cut-outs (which probably isn't the right term at all) look incredible. The combination of those splashers, the massive single wheels, and the chimney cap give her something of the look of a paddle steamer on rails, which very much fits the Lady of the Lake moniker, I think.

I have a few thoughts in regard to the design. First off, you should probably find a way to mount the cylinder block as part of the chassis, just to decrease risk of breaking the side rod assembly. Secondly, the gears should probably be FDM printed, due to the fragility of resin. Tird, make the brake rigging on the tender a separate FDM part like the handrails, so that you don't risk breaking it while mounting the tender wheels. All that said, This looks amazing. I believe that a pro manufacturer would have made this largely out of metal, but that said, yours really looks like a proper engineering sample from an announcement article. I can't wait to see the final product!
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 9 ай бұрын
Yeah that would have been ideal - but the cylinders are a seamless part of the smokebox, so I decided to mount them as part of that... it is easy enough to undo the crank pins, as the rods are actually much stronger than I expected, same with the gears - when stress tested they showed no sign of weakness/failure! FDM brake rigging would have been better, but that would limit me in terms of how fine they could be... so this was my preferred choice, and I'm tweeking the design for next time! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Silicone would just melt/burn even with aliminum the only metal i can think of that would work with that are gallium but then the casis would melt on a hot day. you could cast in sand or plaster that would work if you 3D print a part sand coat it in epoxy then sand it down and use that as your patten
@StreamlinedTrainFan11
@StreamlinedTrainFan11 9 ай бұрын
Silicone has a burning temperature of 400F and you can use a bismuth alloy that melts at around 250F. That’s low enough to do it on the stove. There are alloys that melt even lower than that but I don’t think they would be practical. An added bonus is that bismuth is heavier than lead so you don’t need a lot of it to add whole lot of weight.

This is incredible, can't believe how fine this print looks. This put a shame to some professional models.... All of these tiny details are marvelous.... Theres is just one strange thing, the fact that it's possible to see through the top of the splashers all the way through the boiler, it really looks awkward. It's a part that catch the eye for sure because of how beautiful it is, and the unrealistic hole ruin the magic a bit. Can't you put something in the way, just a square block, or something?
